Lionheart
Just thought I'd write a quick blurb in support of Elysiums article. I have been playing it for about 5 hours and I have a much brighter outlook than after playing the demo.
I havent come across any turbo wolves yet, but there are guard dogs you can battle and while fast, they seem to give you an extra half second decision gate. Add to this the fact that 98% of the monsters are much slower (less than half speed) when they charge you.
So far the emphasis is more on exploring than combat. The background areas are detailed and very well done. IMHO much better than Infinity engine.
I am really bummed that all the summon and pet spell are pretty much unusable due to mana drain. I'm all fine for timed summons, but the mana drain is prohibitive. It makes it either a chore to connect the dots between mana spirits (mana potions) or wait for the pet to die and have no mana to cast any other spell.
Thankfully there are NPC sidekicks you can pick up from time to time. They are quite durable as well, unlike the bear in the demo.
Overall, the story seems good and the quests are fun. I like the added touch that the voice overs mix in some spanish with the english. (they have subtitled translation if you get confused)

You mean your mana constantly drops as long as your pet is summoned? Please say no

Damn, I don''t like that.

Dont let it prevent (sway?) you from picking this up. Im enjoying it as my female feralkin (Jade Redfang)character is kicking ass in unarmed combat and leaching back health from the fallen, muahahaha.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Do the NPCs have interesting personalities and goals as in BG or are they just more of the standard fighting packmules?
Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
I think they have both. The bear in the demo joined you cuz you killed the hunter firing arrows at him. In release, its a trapped soldier that joins you until you leave the sewers.
Based on interaction with other NPCs so far I wouldnt doubt if you got a more colorful sidekick at some point. There is a shapeshifting quest giver. How cool would that be as a sidekick.

I''m a bit torn between picking this up or the new Age of Wonder game... I have always gotten such great play out of the age of wonder games (even run well on laptop), but this looks like it might to ok also (though 800x600 wtf? that does not look good on LCD''s).

Did Samurai Jack ever get back to the past?
So, has anyone tried out the coop-mode?
Elysium and I gave it a shot, it may have been our connection (he was hosting) but the lag, especially when casting spells, was un-workable. As host he had no problems but it was chop city for me.
I don''t know, I could see coop being fun if you play through the game on your own first, otherwise you''d lose a lot of the plot unless you really took your time and made sure your partner was around to listen in and help make dialog choices. It felt a bit tacked on to me but to be fair we only tried it for about 20 minutes.

I am really digging the interface in this game. It takes all the complexity of the SPECIAL system and puts it in an interface so intuitive that it could belong to a Diablo game. Everything you need is right down there on the bar, when it comes time to level up there are no huge pages of stats. It''s very pretty and functional to boot. I love the fact that I have leveled up and done a bunch of other tasks and not run into one page that looked like a character sheet.

I found a ring of undead summing and sold it as soon as I saw my mana drop like a stone. The drain wouldn''t bother me if it wasn''t so damn fast. It stops you from pulling the 8hr death stomp like in NWN. (My summomed dire tiger killed two ""winds"" and the end boss in SOU!)
Fang, just talk to your pet ""release"" it and it''ll vanish. It''s not like it''s got anything else to do... damn non-interactive henchmen.
edit: I would''ve posted this sooner, but I was playing. LVL 9 and getting stomped by trolls...

Heh, well Im level 13 on my third attempt at making a starting character. She is Lockpicking, healing and onehander.
I dont see how you could not play this game if you liked Divine Divinity.
The combat kinda sucks as its walk a couple paces and get attacked by a couple guys. Every now and then you walk a few paces and get swarmed but its pretty much stuff you can handle.
Does anyone know what things like voydanoi skulls and some of the other ""reagant"" like components do? I would love for them to have an alchemy system so I can make potions.
One thing to look out for when in Da Vinci''s home, play the viola organista. (the piano thingie on the left)
They did a good job with the VO. Torquemada is pretty creepy. Shakespeare and da Vinci areneat too.
BTW you definitely get NPC sidekicks with personality (Cortez!!)during specific quests. I know you can release pets but whats the point? The mana still drains way too fast and the stuff you summon is marginally useful.
Oh and I hope there are some hidden skills or spells. Cortez hinted at some stuff he learned in the Americas and there is a Chinese merchant in Barcelona... (expansion?)

Anyone know how to revive companions? I got Cortez killed

Heh, I think its called ""Autosave""
It in the game options section under ""load game"" =P
Seriously though, he is only a side quest as far as I can tell.
Im surprised more people arent bitching about the Goblin Khan...
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Haven''t found any use for wolf pelts or wasp stingers, but the fish monger in the Port District buys voydanoi skulls. I''ve also found three perks so far, but no skills or spells.

Waaay past that point buddy
I''d just like to complete his quest instead of poking his corpse. Certis says in coop you can click on them to revive them but it''s not working in single player

Well I was able to actually defeat him without the thing that you can find that makes it super easy. I trounced the second daeva too with only one extra healing potion.
****SPOILER****** for Goblin Khan
I want that friggin spell he had that lets him tap his enterage for super regen! The first time I solved it I made a b-line for his helpers. I killed a few then ran out of the cave, healed, then finished em off. When they were all dead the khan regen is gone so hes much easier to kill. Of course, finding the G. Rip made things a piece of cake.
***** END SPOILER ******

You sick bastards.
I only got around to trying the demo last night after having spent almost 2 weeks downloading it. But I''m not holding it against you guys. Nuh-uh!

Anyway, my initial impression was that this was one hectic game. I think I died about 5/6 times just trying to figure out how everything works while in the prison cell. After that it got better though. Quite a bit better actually. I''m a bit of an Infinity Engine fanboi, so the game mechanics and interface of Lionheart don''t sit too well with me, but I''m at least going to finish the demo to give it a fair chance.
It certainly is good to hear that they slowed down the enemies. I may end up getting this afterall

Dont base your purchase on the demo. The demo is representative of no more than 10-15% of the game. (far less percentage content-wise)
Over 70% of the other monsters you fight are less than half the speed of the wolves.
There are sneaky and diplomatic solutions to the majority of the major quests (so far... this game is huge!).
If you like the infinity games you will love the crazy amounts of side quests involving some colorful characters from history. (Cervantes and Cortez for example)
The art direction is solid. The backgrounds are pretty and the load times are nowhere near as long as Infinity engine games. The animation isnt spectacular but it is competent.
I dont think I would be going out on a limb too much in saying that if BG fans can get past the fact its not BG combat, they will enjoy the game.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Thanks for that, fang.
I fully realise that demos don''t represent final game content (or size) by a long shot, but I feel it should at least give an indication of game mechanics and interface (for a SP game at least).
I think you may have just swayed me with the side-quest thing...

Anyone finish the game yet? If so, how is it? I''m just debating on either pick it up now or later down the road...
