Wow, looks really cool. I wonder if you can customize your character any. I'm partial to staring at busty nymphly things in chainmail bikinis rather than stumpy hobbits. Definitely will give it a look when I get home.

Yes. Also, this game does look really cool.

Rumour has it I've just downloaded the demo to try at work. Here's hoping the boss doesn't show up today.

This game is terrific! Its basically a D2 clone with a pet that grows and you can temporarily or permanently change into other forms.

Its got an open skill system with no trees and no prerequisites.

ANd its a simple dungeon crawl. There are no more act 3 PITA outdoor areas. Just straight up random dungeon level after level.

Its a little bummer that its one continuous dungeon. I would have prefered Diablo 1's arrangement. It gives a sense of completion. Running out of town portal scrolls is something you dont want to do further along down the line.

You can send your pet back to town to sell while you fight on. Of course you have to fight w/o your pet while its gone.

There is also an option to retire your character with passing on traits and an heirloom item that gets a 25% stat boost across the board for your sibling.

There is a fame system that is basically xp for killing named bosses and completing quests. When you level in fame, you get 5 skill points. (normally you get 2 skill points when you level up with normal xp)

Read up on it. After playing the demo for 20 minutes (you can only go down to level 3 of the supposed several hundred levels of the dungeon) I bought it.

You wont be getting Baldur's Gate 2. It does fill a Diablo 2 itch. And at $20 you cant go wrong. Im having much more fun with it than GW.

Well this definitely looks like something to check out! Granted I'm too lazy to download the demo as I want to go try out my new-found GW build, but maybe later tonite.

Hey fang, how do you permanently change your pet? So far I've just been able to turn it into this or that for a few minutes at a time.

Havent gotten there yet either LobMob. But supposedly higher level fish will be able to change the pet permanently. Nice since the pets are pretty much a monster distraction at best when not transformed. There is a link in the forums to the pdf of the manual. I read about it and the offspring stuff in there. The main dev says he's gonna have an SDK for FATE next week. Woo! Mod time as soon as the 3dsmax exporter comes out!

Its cool though...well worth the $19.99

Yeah, I dropped a $20 on it, too. Hell, spent that much on lunch today, figured why not.

I want to kick my dog.

By the way, fishing? Can't stress it enough. I found a fishing hole on floor 1, during the demo, and got some little fingerlings and stuff out of it. Oh, and the Omega Zephyr, a spear that does over 100 damage.

OK, apparently you can get your pet to permanently change by feeding it a Flawless Fish. But if you then feed it a non-flawless fish, when the transformation wears off it'll turn back into a terrier or kitty.

Maybe when the SDK comes out I'll make a little mod to make it easier to change your pet.

Ugh I dont even want to know how high a level you have to be to get the flawless fish. I hope/wonder if you can pass along your transformed pet (lessened to level 1 of course) to your heirs.

Hmm, wait a minute! When you pass down an heirloom item it gets a 25% stat boost and it get bumped up a quality notch each time its passed down. Retire a few times with an heirloom item of a type of fish that transforms the pet into what you want and wallah, permanent pet!

I don't think you can bequeathe a fish to your ancestors. That's... freakin' nasty.

I found Cleve's Cloven Cleaver of Cleaving! I also found a Flawless Grouper on floor 10, at level 10. Caught another on that same level. So now I've got a pet spider.

Be careful. I don't know about this particular title, but Wild Tangent used to be known as being rapant with spyware. Caveat emptor...

It comes up as spyware under Spybot S&D, which was enough to get me to kill it. According to what I've read online, it doesn't collect any personally identifiable information, just stats on hardware configuration, game usage, etc., but YMMV.

There was a good article in CPU magazine with the founder of WildTangent on their spyware woes... It was a good 2part read and really opened your eyes to the other side of the spyware saga.. AFAIK everything on the WildTangent side is on the up and up and they've spent a great deal of energy and time dealing with the "companies" that created Spybot and Adaware to get removed from their black list.

Their webdriver client is no more spyware than say...Steam.

So based on that...it wont be for everyone.

EDIT

Microsoft's antispyware program beta doenst detect the webdriver client as spyware

Hey Gang,
Fellow fanboy here just letting you know some issues the designer, Travis Baldree, is hoping to fix within the next week or so.

Travis Baldree wrote:
I am currently finishing up fixes on a couple of issues that have been reported since launch, and am working on an ETA for an updated version of the game on the site. Most of this is pretty minor stuff.

If you experience any bugs, PLEASE let me know so that I can attempt to squeeze them into this fix! Thank you!

1. (Critical) VERY RARE freeze when loading levels. This has to do with a level not generating properly and being unable to find a place to stick the stairwell. I've only had 2 reports, and we never saw it during test, so it is unlikely that most of you will see this.

2. Artifact items were not sellable for the correct price - they ended up selling too cheap.

3. If the pet turned into a creature with spells, the pet was not learning those spells. Not necessarily a bug, but needed to be changed IMHO.

4. 'Increases' was misspelled in one of the tooltips

5. Rattlekill was not showing up as an Artifact

6. Black Bit artifact had two Strength requirements

7. Fish Caught statistic was actually tracking Times Fished instead. Doh!

8. Tooltip over portal in town to indicate the dungeon level its linked to.

Thank you for your patience as I resolve these issues

Ive been following the official forums for the past few days.

There are some good discussions for further improvements going on. This includes a debate on whether coop or single player enhancements should be focused on for a later revision/s.

Ive asked a few game mechanic specific questions. The lead designer has responded to all questions quickly and in a to-the-point, detailed manner.

Travis Baldree wrote:
Updated Version is Live!

If you downloaded a version on or after about 6:30 PM on Monday, May 23, you ALREADY HAVE the updated version.

For those of you that have experienced one of the following issues ( or don't want to! ) an updated version of Fate has just gone live.
Note that you WILL NOT HAVE TO RE-UNLOCK YOUR GAME! You will not lose an unlock by updating.

I apologize that we had to get you an update so soon out of the gate, but better soon than late, in my opinion.

modem version -
http://download.wildgames.com/wildgames/fatelow-drm3.exe

Broadband version
http://download.wildgames.com/wildgames/fate-broadband-drm3.exe

All you'll have to do is download a new version from one of the links above, and reinstall. That's basically it. Your save files will be fine.

Here are the issues that were fixed, and tweaks that were made -

1. (Critical) VERY RARE freeze when loading levels. This has to do with a level not generating properly and being unable to find a place to stick the stairwell.

8. Rollover text on portal in town now tells you which dungeon level is on the other end

9. Mousing over your health bar now shows your resistances ( if you have any )

10. Underneath the health bar of monsters you can see summoning duration, or transformation duration for pets

11. Spells did not tell you whether you could write them when they were in shops - only while in your inventory - fixed

12. Fish did not tell you what they did when they were in your stash, or in other merchants' ( besides the fish merchants' ) inventories

13. If you had a spell as active spell, and the only reason you could use it was due to magical effects, then when you reloaded your game, the spell would become inactive. Fixed

14. Using a magic anvil while your pet was going to town would cause them to return without selling their stuff first.

15. Some of the collision boxes for crates were reduced to prevent hallway blockages in rare circumstances

16. The skeletons in the modem version had little pink halos between their fingers. Fixed.

17. The 'teen numbers ( 13th, 14th, 15th ) were showing up wrong ( 13rd ) fixed.

Thank you for your patience as these issues were resolved!
I hope you have fun with the game.

I've got a lvl 10 fighter right now, he's a blast to play! Decided not to go magic and it's worked out so far. Can't wait to see what kind of items you get at the lower lvls of the dungeon.

I've got a level 13 fighter with some decent magic. I didn't really WANT magic, but some of the spells are super-useful. I've got this shockwave spell that pushes everyone away from me, and I can summon cursed scimitars and skeletons to help me fight.

And my pet is a BRAIN BEAST!

By the way guys... Gambling is TOTALLY worth it. More items than not end up being rares. I got a ring with +10 to Attack Magic skill.

Maybe someone can assuage my concerns about this "wildtangent webdriver" it wanted to install. I figured with the couple of warning posts on this thread I'd at least take a look at the EULA and such.
When I clicked on the Privacy Statement it opened up IE (not my default browser) and went to page cannot be displayed. Shadiness abounds.

As an aside, nothing personal Lobster, but your new avatar makes me want to slap you around a little.
