X360's "Backward Compatibility"
Thursday, May 19th, 2005 - 11:36am
Can anyone confirm this?
Bad, bad news. It says that MS is now saying its "Backward Compatibility" on the X360 is nothing more than re-releases of XBox games. I somehow doubt they'll be free or even available upon trade-in. This isn't a feature, it's a marketing scheme.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.

TeamXbox posted a video interview and it mentions about B/C. I can't watch it at work, anyone willing to do it and mention some thing about it!

That's not what I'd call backward compatibility-- I'd call that insane. Kind of hard to believe, really. It better not be true. I guess the plan would be to feature that it runs on the 'new' XBox Live and prettier graphics, but it still strikes me as very disingenious.

Yeah, that's horsesh*t. I find it hard to believe that MS would try and pull that off. It probably wouldn't affect my decision to buy the console, but I would most certainly not be plunking down my hard earned cash for recompilings of the same games I already own.

Watched it, it says nothing useful about BC.

Ah so you don't own and gameboy games then. Good to know.

If it is true, I won't be buying one at launch.
Pirate Jallard dances around the subject and says it won't play vinyls and cassettes. He says nobody wants to go back anyway and he only plays 2 PS1 games on PS2. Says the launch titles will be so good no one will ever turn back. Didn't right-out say it won't have backward compatibility, so so much for being straightforward.

I've never owned a portable system, but I think that's apples and oranges. Most of those GBA rereleases are from more than a generation ago, are considered to be classics of their respective genres, and have never existed on a handheld system. It's a much different situation than the possiblity of MS rereleasing a bunch of polished-up last gen games and charging money for them.
Though come to think of it, I might lay down a few bucks for a spruced up Halo 1 with Live functionality and online co-op.

Ladies and Gentlemen... if it COULD play XBox games they would parade that around like a golden dachshund. If there were a CHANCE that it could, they would parade that around like a golden turd. If there is no CHANCE that it could, they would say that they are trying and that you really don't want that feature anyway.
Or... they could be waiting to drop the bombshell closer to launch time in order to gain more converts when it matters.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
Hmm... dang.
None the less it would make sense is to what they said about only top- selling games would be backward compatible!

I just hate it when these designers and businessfolk tell me what I want. Maybe if I worked for Microsoft I could afford to buy a whole new system and game library at whim.

Guess I will just have to keep my original XBox to play my original games then. Kind of sucks cause I don't want to have half a dozen consoles eating up space on my entertainment center, and I am kind of lazy, so I don't want to have to pull out the ol' black brick to play some Phantom Dust or what have you.

From what I have read, it seems that they will be including an emulator with the 360 that will probably not be compatible with all the titles. What I know of emulation says that it is much easier to optomize an emulator with fewer titles in mind. However, thanks to Live! I expect that they may increase the volume of backwards compatible titles as time goes on.

Note that there also exists the possibility that I will ride Claire Forlani long and hard before I die which is about as substantiated a "rumor" as the "resell" rumor.
They have 2 choices with running original (x86/nVidia executable) games on Xbox 360 (PPC/ATI platform): emulation or recompilation. Each approach has pluses and minuses. Neither approach -- when described as a "backwards compatibility" approach by the company -- necessitates or even supports asking the consumer to pay again for their game. With either approach, they have a number of options for delivering the needed updates, be they updates to the emulation engine or recompiled executables: delivery over Xbox Live, distribute discs, ship them on the hard drive, whatever. Some, especially the "distribute discs" method (and bear in mind a single disc would likely hold the executables for many, many games) may require a nominal fee or not depending on how they want to treat their customers. But to actually think they'll say "our backwards compatibility means that customers have the option of buying Xbox 360-compatible versions of old software" is, frankly, ludicrous.

There is no way this will happen...no sane company.. especially one as savy as Microsoft would even bother going through the expense of packaging and reselling games that they know <1% would sell. More importantly what retailer given shelf space premium would even stock these items?
I cant even believe people are posting this as "factual" information or getting this worked up over it.
I mean really.

I'd just like some solid statement from Microsoft about it. I didn't believe it either, but Jallard's flakey, political statement makes me wonder.

There is an interview with Steve Ballmer over at engadget that talks a lot about backward compatability among other things and it definately sounds like he is referring to emulation. All I can say is we need more Ballmer and less of Allard and the other two clowns at the microsoft press conference. Some very good stuff in this interview.
I'm not sure I like this though, kind of makes me want to wait for the better version:

Outstanding.
You can't make somebody love you, but you can buy a bigger television.
We wouldn't even be discussing it if M$ wasn't dancing around the issue. A simple answer is all we desire - the other two manufacturers have stated their stance and they're farther away from the finished product. So until the time they clearly state the plan, this type of speculation (and worse) will continue to pop up.

HAHA! man thats awesome... you did M$ instead of Microsoft or MS. Man...I've never seen that before.
If I was Microsoft I would would have said F Backwards Compat. and simply said...its not backwards compatible. end of story.

Stric9, remember that you can easily remove the X360's harddrive. Wouldn't be too hard for them to release larger capacity upgrades, no?
Anyway, about Ballmer... So THIS is one of the assholes that lets his 10-year-old play MMPOGs.
I think this just about says it all.

And there’s also the possibility of patching over Live to allow for more games down the roadâ€"is that something that’s being looked at?
Robbie Bach, Chief Xbox Officer: Sure, there’s a number of different ways you can distribute the capability. The thing you have to recognize is we got to a point at E3 that we said look, there’s so much speculation about this even though the work is ongoing, we should just deal with it and get people focused on the right thing rather than on the wrong thing. We wanted people knowing we’re doing the work, but you don’t want to say we’re going to do every single game, because we don’t know that to be a fact today.

I agree. The people who really demand backward compatibility are obviously pleased enough with their old XBox that it is a safe bet they'll still buy the new one backward compatible or not. And personally, I'd rather they focused on supporting new games.

Sure but they are talking about perhaps adding an HD-DVD or Blue Ray drive and TV tuner to provide tivo functionality.
