Damn.

With the Sopranos and Six Feet Under getting long in the tooth I hope they have some good stuff to offer. Rome looks promising I guess, but this sucks.

MOTHERF*CKERS.
All they need to do now is cancel Deadwood, Family Guy, and Adult Swim, and I can sell my TV. Especially with Sarah Chalke leaving Scrubs...
I hate people.
EDIT: Sarah Chalke is NOT leaving Scrubs. She''s moved to another hospital and will probably be on the show less, but isn''t leaving for goodor anything. Not that this makes me any less pissed about Carnivale.

Not surprised. This was one of those shows that the network didn''t know what to do with.

I try not to swear much or loose my cool on GWJ.. but I feel like shouting a string of expletives at HBO execs right about now. Carnivale is an awesome show and me and the girl have been hooked on it from the start.
""We feel the two seasons we had on the air told the story very well..""
Yeah, except for all those.. you know, the unfinished story line and cliff hanger ending.

F*ck! I had a feeling this was gonna happen.
Only show on TV I followed. Any idea how the story is gonna be resovled? Maybe the creator will write a book or something, we can''t be left hanging like this!

My wife and I just finished watching the series a week ago and that day I went online to find out when season three would start. I read about the rumors that HBO might not pick it up for another season, and was hoping that they were untrue. Damn!
That was an awesome series and damn if they didn''t drop it at the worst time in the story. Bleh, first Serenity and now Carniavle. I''m sure they''ll cancel Battlestar Galactica next because that''s another of our favorite series.
My wife frequents a fan forum for Carnivale where the show's creator, Daniel Knauf, posts. (Supposedly they have confirmed that that he is who he says he is) Here are some of his comments about the cancellation:
http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivaleHBO/message/20320
http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivaleHBO/message/20380
For this post, be warned. Thar be spoliers here: Knauf hints at the fates of three characters. Nothing major mind you, just a little something to keep you from wondering.

Well, in reference to the aforementioned spoiler link from Knauf, I say "f*ck yeah!"
Of course, some could be saying he's just realizing what will piss of his consumers most (killing Jonesy, one of the most beloved characters) and realizing there's no harm in telling them "Oh, yeah, don't worry, he's alive..."

I also heard a rumor that HBO wasn't too thrilled with Knauf doing a bit for Showtime...
Cyrana Mage 80 ~ Artesia Druid 72
Cyranna Shaman 62 ~ Acereri - DK 61 ~ Artasian - Priest 59 ~ Lenna - Rogue 60
I started missing Carnivale the minute the "series finale" ended.
This is a sad day for pay TV.

Just out of curiosity, what motivates HBO to cancel a show?
They dont have any ad revenue.
Im sure they want numbers of viewership. However, I cant see them flip flopping around with series like the major networks because it doesnt have to be an instant smash/influx of ad revenue. Sure they need series to draw in viewers but they also need sustainable content for their current user base.
Was it too expensive?

I think it was pretty expensive.
A friend of the family is an exec. producer with HBO and gave me an inside scoop on what happened... It was basically the fact that the viewership for Season 2 did not grow beyond the audience for Season 1. HBO had defined a set ROI (Return on Investment) that included gaining a significant audience increase in order to solidify their Sunday night lineup further. Carnivale ended up not showing any growth at all and was a potential liability for the other HBO series being shown on Sunday night as viewers changed channels when Carnivale was airing. They needed a solid (and broader mainstream audience appeal) ratings hit (like The Sopranos) to bridge the 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock timeslot and the genre-defying Carnivale just didn't fit in.
Of course, the "audience growth" argument was used by SciFi when it canceled Farscape. I'll definately miss Carnivale, though, maybe we'll see the rest of the series return in miniseries or book format some day.

So they cancel it and now they are assured that viewers will change the channel because they've replaced Carnivale with filler?
Wow, makes sense to me. Nothing for something seems to be a valid strategy these days.
