Things to do in Denver...
Monday, May 9th, 2005 - 12:47pm
I'm going to be in Denver, CO for some work-related training the week of May 23rd. My evenings will be free and I'm wondering if anyone who is familiar with the city could offer some suggestions as to some fun things to do?

Hookers.
...not that I''ve ever been to Denver.

Try not to get shot, raped or robbed.

I had no idea. Apparently I shouldn''t drive a car that I want to keep into Denver. 3x the national average of auto theft!
On the bright side, I hear it''s a lovely city!
Edit: I just looked up Pittsburgh. Whatever you do, don''t come close to here!

Are you going to be downtown... the DTC... or somewhere else? What are you looking to do? How much time you got?
Sit around and sing John Denver songs.

Go Skiing! Probably some snow left at Breckinridge..

Actually Breck usually ends its season in mid april... It''s hiking and biking season now!
If DTC = Denver Tech Center, then yes (I think. I''m staying at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center). I''ve got a few hours each evening after 6:00pm the whole week. I''m just looking for things to kill the time. Good places to eat/drink are appreciated. Any place easy to reach is a plus. I hate driving in big cities...

Hmmm... I haven''t really been to the DTC for a couple of years... my wife used to work over there. Word on the street is that a lot of new bars have popped up around there to cater to young profesionals(not those kind Mex & Razor).
If you have car I''d go downtown to LoDo (Lower Downtown) Its a lot of fun in summer... lots of bars, girls, and good eats. If you are a carnivore try out the Rodizio Grill.. its all you can eat meat and damn good meat at that.. They''ll keep bringing you stuff until you say stop! Hoepfully they''ll have the tenderloin wrapped in bacon. Bayoo Bob''s is pretty good cajun. Maybe you can catch a rockies game or something...
FYI... I-25 is under heavy construction right now... during rush hour it gets kind of clogged. Though the DTC isn''t too far away from downtown and all you need to do is get on I-25 northbound for 8 miles or so.
The foot hills are about a half hour west of the DTC. If you''re gettiing out at 6pm then hiking may not be possible.
Two words: free beer.
The Coors Brewery is in Golden (on the outskirts of Denver), is free, and features three full-sized free samples at the end of the 45-minute experience.
Beyond that...I''m not sure what else there is to do in Denver besides the aquarium. Now if you were visiting Colorado Springs, just an hour to the south, I''d probably be more helpful...
I started my own blog so when I feel the need to make an ass out of myself, I won't have as far to go.
I thought the Zoo was nice. Also take a trip south and hit Pike''s Peak if able.

Denver has a really good Natural Science Museum and if you''re down town, there is the Imax.

I live in Denver. A great place to go eat is The Fort. NOt an everyday place but the kinda place to wine and dine folks on the company tab.
It''s an experience. It''s a drive tho. I remember when some vendors took us out to eat there. They made the new guy expense it. He got a little bit of flak for that. lol.

If the Rockies are playing you could catch a game. They suck. But the stadium is awesome. And that whole area has lots of bars and food. It''s downtown. Take I25 up north and you''ll see an exit for the stadium once you hit downtown. 20th avenue or park avenue east are good exits.
The Red Rocks is a good place to visit (even better to see a concert there) cause it''s got some new tourist-type center dealio. It''s up in the foothills. But alas more of a day activity unless there''s concert happening.
There''s a sweet piano bar downtown. IT has dueling pianos. Can be quite entertaining if you''re drinking. Also 16th street Mall downtown is a good place for food and bars. Usually looks nice. There''s a couple of good bars off there that are fairly small and have great music. I think there on Lawrence and 16th. Been awhile I don''t go out as much anymore with a 4 yr old running around.
Colfax has your hookers. You could go catch an arena football game if they are playing. The team is the Colorado crush. Also catch a Colorado Rapids game if they are playing. They are the soccer team. They play in the Broncos stadium which is only ~ 2 years old. Also there''s Lacrosse. Tickets and cheap and they pack the Pepsi Center.
Yeah there''s the Aquarium or Science Museum stuff. The Denver Mint. OR Six Flags Elitch Gardens. Which is downtown.
But at night around the tech center I don''t know what to do. There''s a nice mall down there. Park Meadows. hehe. NIce restaurants around there. Mostly chains there tho. There''s a DAVe & Busters on I-25& Colorado. North Tech Center. Do some drinking, eating and playing games.
Anyway I''ve never partied down in the Tech Center. So can''t recommend much in that area. If you got time during the day you can drive up into the foothills/mountains. YOu can drive up to the top of Mt. Evans. Highest paved road in NOrth America. Tho this early it might not be open.
I think you can ski at A-Basin still. But the other places are closed.
Go up to Boulder and peruse Pearl Street Mall. You can also head up to Chautauqua Park and do a little hiking. Then hit The Med or Walnut Brewery. Since there are no shows at Red Rocks (it''s still a nice place to check out during the day) or Fiddler''s Green and no games at Coor''s Field (and we all know about hockey), if you are an outdoorsy person, you might want to consider visiting the amazing REI store in downtown Denver. If you like Broadway plays, you may also consider the Denver Center for Performing Arts.
At the end of May most of the hiking trails are most likely still covered in snow. You can find some lower elevation hikes that are good (Boulder is good for that).
That''s all I''ve got right now.
It''s somewhat crazy but if the weather is good and you''re tired of everything else that people mentioned above, we did drive to Vail for dinner a time or two when I was contracting up there... just to see it and say we did it.
