Guild Wars Impressions Thread
In Gaming and Platforms? Quoi?!
I think general impressions belong here and we'll keep the guild stuff and general chat in the MMORPG section as usual.
I've barely gotten started so I don't have much to report game-wise but I do have a few bullet points.
- It. Is. Sexy!
- As an experience this is not really a MMORPG. The moment you leave the starting village and enter the first "training" area it's just you in this huge landscape. No other players allowed unless you invite them to adventure with you. This is the key difference between this and a game like WoW. It's really nice to have big environments full of quests all to myself, it also allows for more dynamic content in terms of plots and scripted events.
- The music is very good, I actually listened to the whole sound track last night and it's top notch.
- PVP is optional. Right at the start you decide if you want to join and make a "Roleplaying character" (start at level one, do missions and adventure with friends) or a PVP character who starts at the highest level cap and can only play PVP gametypes with other players.
- The art is very good and consistent. Screenshots are nice on their own but they don't tell the whole story, it moves really well and gives a good atmosphere. I love WoW's art direction too but I think Guild Wars has it beat in pure graphical wow factor. So to speak.
Here are some 1680 X 1050 shots, everything cranked and running smoothly on my 9800 Pro.

You''re right, the man model is super girly. Go ahead and get yourself some boobs, you''re 90% of the way there.

And don''t you forget it. Considering how many people aren''t playing a MMORPG and wouldn''t think to check the section I think this is an appropriate place for general impressions.
No kidding, maybe Rangers are just inherently girly and I need to switch to a manly warrior
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
So.. um... what do you do? How do you meet people? Is this like Morrowind yet you can get ""out"" of this world of NPC''s and join a world of People?

Certis, you''re soooo dreamy...

Great in-game shots.
Dammit. What is it about this game that has my interest piqued? I only really started to notice it this week with all our you guys talking about it, and now I am seriously considering getting the game. I swore after FFXI I would never go back to a MMORPG, but this seems to have all the pluses of one, with none of the down sides such as level grinding. The thought of creating a Warrior/Necromancer hybrid is getting almost too impossible to resist. Please keep the impressions coming.

I think the ranger looks kinda cool.
Then again, I''m a metal head from way back so the long hair doesn''t throw me. I actually had a few (clueless) people mistake me for a girl when I was a teenager. They must have felt pretty sorry for me. ""The poor dear, she''s so ugly"".
I'm still right here

There are central areas where you can congregate with other players, go shopping, get new missions and go to new areas. That''s where the whole ""massive"" part comes into play. Also, when we form the GWJ guild there''s a guild chat and it''s easy to hook up to go on missions. You can actually pull up the world map and zip to any area you''ve been to before immediately.

Even on my medium setting the graphics are great.
This game is awesome is the best way I can describe it.
Heres a current shot of my necromancer.

I''ve noticed that since the beta you no longer get just experience from quests, you can get weapons and such now.
I miss old Ascalon and all its colors.

Oh, so you ditch WoW and now play this eh?

You should see the Necromancer''s dance animations, they''re WAY metal with all the headbanging and jumping around. It''s pretty funny.

Did you guys all pre-order are is the game available in stores now? I checked on tuesday at my local EB and they said they wouldn''t have it until Thursday.

Is there any crafting/tradeskills?

Pre-orders can play today, the rest can play tomorrow so I would imagine your EB is right.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
Picked up my preordered CE during lunch today.
I''ve been leaning toward an owning-but-not-actually-playing stance on this game but after reading your impressions, Certis, I might actually fire this baby up. The instancing of game play and not being forced into PvP definitely have me interested.
Is it relatively solo-friendly?

I just called my local Target, and the kid in electronics said they put the game out on the shelves today. I''m just waiting until 5 p.m. so I can go there and get it.
I was gonna try to get in on Halo 2 Night tonight, but my wireless bridge is being a bit of a douchebag so my Live no worky, and....well, Guild Wars.

You can definiteyl solo in the game. Some missions are for groups though.

I think so, some of the missions get pretty complex but you can hire a full complement of NPC''s in place of actual players to join you. I can''t vouch for their effectiveness just yet but they were pretty good in beta when it was just me and one more player. I think we needed a healer so we just took an NPC along.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
I''ve played this in beta and the NPC ally AI is the best I''ve ever seen. The healers know when to heal. If you are down but have a mob close by the NPC will stay back, attack and wait for an opening to heal you. Very impressive!
I'm bringing sexy back!
I''m sorry but twenty replies and no actual impressions. You leave me no choice...

I gave my impression, I said it was ""impressive"".

Dammit again! Futureshop has it on for only 39.99! Will power fading fast.....can someone please post a bad review of this game so I can justify to myself that I should not pick this up and instead spend the money on bills?

Gosh darnit. I preordered mine from GOGAMER.COM, and GOGAMER.COM never sent me my preorder package. My order shows that it has shipped, but GOGAMER.COM has dropped a notch in my eyes. I could be playing this lovely game right now. Darn you GOGAMER.COM! Darn you to heck!
(I''m not terribly upset, so I thought Phil should be able to handle the hexing.)
Thats strange, I ordered from gogamer and my copy got in earlier today, when did you preorder?

Okay, it has the ever present danger of the CompUSA mail in, but I found this:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=317208&ref...
Which appears to be Guild Wars for $49.99, plus a mail in for a $10 CompUSA gift card, plus a bunch of swag (T-Shirt, etc.).
Hope it helps someone, I am resisting so far.
Two and a half weeks ago.
I don''t expect the game to show up any time soon (I''m in the boonies), but I had hoped to see the preorder package before now.
It was nice of them to consult with the boys at ""Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"" when they developed their player models.
Heh. I''m doubly borked; I''m interested and it can''t run worse than WoW.

I got the game last night and allready I''m annoyed.. the game wont take my resolution of 1920X1200.. it claims to have changed but when I hit keep it always goes back to 1024X768
edit
on the 5th try it took the resolution change for some reason.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter
