Doctor Who *Catch All*
Sunday, April 24th, 2005 - 1:17am
Just caught the latest epsiode, and I am happy to say I really enjoyed it. Overall the series has had some really great moments. What has me really excited however is a short phrase revealed in the preview for what I believe is next weeks episode.
Exterminate, EXTERMINATE!

Been watching this. Absolutely wonderful. Was about use the same quote Gaald (love the Daleks). Eccleston is a great doctor, too bad he''s only for one season. But his replacement David Tennant is brilliant in his own right (Casanova, in which he starred, is fantastic). Bottom line Russel Davies is doing an incredible job with this series.
Best Sci-fi show, currently on air.
Yeah, what channel?

Good Lord, you North Americans must have been fed some sh*t recently then.
Rhymes with 'yidcaff'. I don't use smilies. Imagine a wink and a wry grin at the end of most of my sentences. I don't like using exclamation marks either. I'm more friendly than you imagine.
Wha..?
There is new/more Doctor Who? Where? I mean, I''ve watched every iteration on PBS.....right form the nasty old geezer that was the first doctor, to Colin Baker.
But I was not aware that there was a new series running-thought it was dead for good.
BT here I come!
BTW, much as I like Tom Baker, the John Pertwee run was quite fun in a James Bond campy sort of way.
Ack! News to me! He is a great Doctor. I hope the next guys is just as good.

Heh see related thread on ST:Enterprise. All I can say is that in the alternate dimensions, Mousse is a must in hair design.
Like I said, I''ve only seen his replacement (David Tennant) in one other production. Casanova, also by Russel Davies, costarring Peter O''Toole. He came across as extremely charismatic and witty. I hate to see Eccleston go, I''m savoring his remaining espisodes, but I think Tennant will be just fine.
A big suprise of the series is how good Billie Piper is. Previous to this my impression of her was a no talent British version of Britney Spears. But she''s actually got some pretty good acting chops.
Thread! I resurrect you!
Recently managed to catch the new Doctor Who series, and was pretty impressed as well. I can't say that the plots, cheesy monster-of-the-week, or writing were particularly outstanding as any single element - particularly when put up against the cynical bite of most sci-fi these days -, but they did manage to keep the great camp feel of the old shows in tact. I hate to put it in such abstract terms, but the show just felt right for Doctor Who. Eccleston had the eccentric charm of Tom Baker mixed in with an interesting interpretation of the character. His ability to jam-shift from fury, to playful, to devastated was a remarkable rollercoaster ride, and when he really wanted to sell an emotion, I almost always bought it. At the end of The Doctor Dances, for example, when he says "just this once, everybody lives." ... I mean it's a cheesy throwaway line but the way he delivers it makes it memorable. The chemistry between Eccleston and Piper also worked remarkably well. Unlike many previous companions I didn't find myself hoping somebody actually would blast Rose right off the face of whatever planet they were on.
I realize I've got a soft spot for the series, so my cynicism meter is running remarkably low for the Doctor, but I just flat out enjoyed watching this season. It had some nicely memorable moments, some expansion on the mythos, and a cast I cared about. I'll be interested to see if Tennant can follow through with Eccleston's strong performance.

I wish BBC America would start showing it..

Bravo Elysium, you put it just right. Eccleston was a great Doctor, especially as presented in the last episode of this series. That being said, I can't wait for Tennant's run.
*spoiler*
I thought that was a high-point episode as well. From the moment the Doctor realizes his Delta Wave plan isn't going to work through to when he sends Rose back with the TARDIS is a good example of what I'm talking about. He shifts from despair, to (mock) enthusiasm, to quiet resignation so swiftly, but when you realize what he's doing and why it's really quite touching. His devotion to and protection of Rose interferes in interesting ways with the common conception of the role - have any of the other Doctors ever been quite so passionate about their companion? - and there's enough about the way Piper plays her role and off Eccleston that it's believable.
I don't know nearly enough about Tennant to be excited or concerned or otherwise.

If you'd like a taste of how Tennant is here's a couple clips from the Casanova mini series. About 10 mgs each, they might not be the most representative of his chops but I found them entertaining for their size.

So watching the new series (not done yet) and so far episode 10 ( The Doctor Dances) seems to be my favorite. Kinda sad knowing this actor will not be the Doctor next season

I never watched the old Dr. Who series. But I absolutely loved this new season (a friend would bring the mpegs to our regular movie night). Eccleston was great and I'll really miss him.

Looks like the Sci-Fi channel will be showing the new series. I hope they get the rights to play the older ones as well.

I saw the Christmas special a couple weeks ago. It was alright, a little more action orientated than I'd like but I think they're still trying to figure out how best to use David Tennant.
I'm looking forward to the new series this spring.
This is great news. I was curious to give the new one a spin, and all BT avenues so far had turned out to be complete duds(coudln't get dl to start after 60+ mins of waiting). I've heard nearly all good feedback on this, so I'm looking forward to it.
Given SFC's botching of Farscape, it's good to see them finally pulling their head's out of their arses with Galactica, Firefly, and now this.

Cool. I started getting the DVDs out of the old series recently, and I was wondering why nobody was bringing the character back. We're in the same culture that's still trying to make money off of Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch and Star Trek and remaking lame movies like "Fun with Dick and Jane"- but nobody wanted the Doctor? It was a crime.
This reminds me, I need to see if I can track down the Christmas special.

Arise from the grave.
Sci-Fi has been showing the 2nd "new" season right before Battlestar Galatica, and I have to say I am really enjoying them.

I'm not exactly in love with the new Doctor but it's still one of my favorite "quirky" shows. It's definately nice to have something fluffy and fun before the seriousness of Galactica comes on.

I miss Christopher Eccleston, but David Tennet does a great job, and the second series had some serious punch to it. This is my favorite show on television, higher than even BSG.
"Even though that place should only be fifteen or twenty minutes away geographically, in actual practice - between the hours of four and seven - Redmond might as well orbit the Earth." - Tycho, Penny Arcade
Tennet really grew on me by the end of the season, to the point where he's more the Doctor to me now than Eccleston. That's hard to say considering the degree to which I liked Eccleston, but there's a little more Tom Baker in Tennet and that just makes him more Doctory to me. I felt like this season, overall, ended up also being better than Eccleston's.

I agree with the Tom Baker comment. The writers seem to do good a job of making him mercurial yet serious. I actually got a kick out of this Doctor choosing an outfit and trying on a long scarf at one point. The appearance of K-9, Mary Jane, and Anthony Stuart Head (Buffy) in an episode did not hurt either. However I am biased as I have always had a soft-spot for the series. One of the few things I wish I could see (heck maybe there is one in storage somewhere) would be another episode penned by the late great Douglas Adams. That would be brilliant.

This new guy is pretty good. But I've liked pretty much all the doctors (though I've only seen two episodes of the original doctor). It's interesting that they've decided to play up the love aspect with Rose. Before now that's something they always left out or at most implied with the doctor's companions.
My wife and I watched the entirety of Season 2 not too long ago, and it was interesting to see her take on it. For her, The Doctor was Christopher, since she had never seen the show before we started watching the new episodes. For myself, Tom Baker is The Doctor, but both Eccleston and Tennant have been mor than able to take on the role, albeit differently in each case. For her, David was really only replacing Christopher, and her adaptation to the new doctor was different, since she wasn't used to seeing him change so drastically. It was interesting to have her insight and perspective in the matter, since she was coming at it from a totally different angle. And I'll agree with what Elysium was saying, since I do see a lot more of the Baker persona in Tennant's performance.
The last 2 episode arc of the second season were, I thought, some of the best the episodes the doctor had to offer. I'm really looking forward to season 3.

This is the same for me, I never watched any of the old old shows so Chris was a great Doctor for me. I enjoy the show (seems all I watch are Sci-Fi shows nowadays!)
Hope the boyfriend gets kicked back off the Tartus soon, I like more Doctor-Rose interaction!
