Guild Wars Question
Thanks to the kindness of someone on this site I was able to participate in the last Guild Wars "beta weekend" this past weekend. Doing so piqued my interest, but due to the short period of play left me with a lot of questions. I'm hoping some of you here who have played in the beta a lot might be able to enlighten me.
Solo UnfriendlyThe post-sear world seems almost obscenely solo-unfriendly. Is post-sear the standard setting for the game, or is it a temporary thing? Are there other areas you can reach later that work better?
Insane Aggro Mob aggro seems to be insane. Many mobs will follow you forever if you flee, and will pull more and more mobs if you fight. In Old Ascalon I got attacked by multiple of those burrowing scorpion things, who also aggroed on several gargoyles. I tried to flee, and died. When I respawned, the same group of mobs rushed me and I died again. They then proceeded to camp the respawn point, killing me over and over. Really not fun. Is this normal, bugged, or just really really unlucky?
Lucky Loot Dependency My first character was a sword based warrior/monk. He made it all the way to level 6 without ever finding a better sword than a random drop 2-4 damage blade. Post-sear seems to have lots of armor crafters, but I never found a weapon crafter. I started a new warrior after the mob "whee, let's kill this player over and over" issue, and by level 2 he had an axe doing 4-8 damage, and multiple other weapons at a similar level. With no real way to go to a vendor and buy weapons, and quests not rewarding items, it seems like you're extremely dependent on random drops. Is this true of the whole game, or just the limited area I saw?
Anyhow, I'll leave it at that, since this post is already pretty long.

Some areas are very solo unfriendly. I have no clue about other areas, I didn''t have enough time to get past the mountains. Once my necro/warrior got to level 10 soloing got a little easier. You do know that you can recruit bots to help you in outposts and towns right?
The agro on the monsters definetly needs to be fixed, running for minutes seems to have no affect at all. You must either accept death or hit the travel key and spawn to a town. I think the way you were camped by the monsters just seems unlucky, never happend to me.
I agree about the loot problem and no weapon crafters. I just found it odd that the weaponsmith doesn''t really smith any weapons. Just seems like a part of the game is missing right there.

Not exactly. Though one of the other issues I had were some pretty serious bugs. One bug involved escorting 3 army recruits for a mission. It all seemed fine until we got attacked by a big group of enemies. The recuits began chain casting an aoe heal . . . and it healed everyone, even the mobs. I couldn''t even come close to killing anything and had to run, but of course the escorts just stood there and died. Oh well.
How do you recruit helpful bots?

In the town there are some NPCs you can hire, but they were only lvl 3.
I went to the academy at lvl 7 as a warrior/monk and was able to solo out in ascalon quite well. Remember, if you are a monk type and get jumped solo by 2 or 3 mobs, you aren''t really supposed to live through that, unless you are a higher lvl.
I did probaly about 75% of the missions available in the starting areas. When I decided to go to the academy, I was lvl 7. I had no trouble at all finding. Once again, I was a warrior/monk, so I could also do minor heals on myself.
I was able to get a Rinsword from the crafter, which was 5-8 I think. If you customize it, it adds +20% damage.
Also, It was mentioned on the guildwars boards that only 30% of the content was madeavailable for the beta weekend. So on release, I''m sure the crafters will have much mor ethings that you can have.

Karma,
I ended up in the post-sear world at level 4. The warning messages when talking to the NPC just made it sound like you''d be stuck in a mission for a long time, not leaving the current world behind forever! In the post-sear world I''d get jumped by 2 or 3 mobs pretty much every time.
Also, the crafter that can make the decent weapons like the Rinsword (5-7), was only in the starter area. Post-sear area had no weapon crafters that I could find in the area you initially have access to, and I was far too puny to go far looking.
Obviously, if I were to do it again (which I did), I''d know better and stay in the starter world for as long as possible and get as much decent equipment as I could.
Graktar, Orc Hunter
That''s true, and only one type of armor was available in the old city as well.
I think much more will be avaliable upon release.
Yeah, I think alot of people thought like you, because in the brief pvp part I totally crushed the other team. I think I killed them 6 times in the 2 min battle.

Soloing is actually really easy in Guild Wars. You have to hire henchmen though.
Henchman are usually located near town gates. Go up to them and talk to them and they will make themselves available to your party.
Several times in beta, I would group with 1-3 gwjers and we would round out the party with 2-4 hirelings. I have done quite a few of the story missions solo with 5 hirelings. Of course this was a month before WoW release. I have not played GW since then.
Crafting and loot were definitely some of the things I found lacking in GW.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Actually the further you go into the story the higher level the henchmen are. I did about 3 main quest stories and the towns it got me into the henchmen were up to level 6.
I wish they would allow me to keep atleast one item from the beta weekend, I found a rare war hammer, it wasn''t even blue named, purple I think it was. Caused 11-14 base damage before customizing, and on my necro/warrior I''d get 20-30 damage from it. I''m gona miss that hammer.

Hah, nice hammer.
Yeah, depending on the area, the bots get higher in level. The real fun mid-late game is getting your buddies together, the later missions can be compared to raids- lots of team work required.
To be honest, it isn''t as much of a solo game, though I got to level 11 only using Henchmen for allies. After that, I needed the extra human power to get through. Post-release they plan to update the henchman selection and give some variety.
Pre-Ordered last year some time, I look forward to playing it. Lots of strategy involved.
Armor was just normal pagan craft, nothing I''d miss.
I''m really looking forward to this game now, just 3 days got me hooked on it.
Hope to see more GWJers there. I''ve heard that starting the 26th everyone who has a beta key can begin to play untill the 29th, where they will ask for the legit cd key. I''ll search up more on it and see if its true.
Heres somethin to help pass time till release.
EDIT: Found the early access period. It will begin the 27th and go on for 48 hours.
Hopefully GoGamer can ship it on the 26th.

I''ll probably get it, especially if more GWJ''ers get into it. I didn''t get much of a chance to play this last beta weekend, but I liked the changes (cosmetic) I saw.
So is there any indication about how their going to do guild affiliation? If I joined my Friday night gamers'' guild, then I''m out of luck when it comes to GWJ''s guild (unless I buy a second copy of the game)?
I don''t think theyed make you buy a 2nd copy, you can use an alt.

AFAIK all your chars are in the same guild and you can only join one since the game really is based more on guild vs. guild and the benefits of staying and fighting with a large group. Tho I imagine that certain well known players will be come mercenary types and fight for the highest paying guild. that would be awesome.
Edit: Since there''s no monthly fee, you could conceivably just drop another $50 for a 2nd account, or switch back and forth between the guilds as needed.

Are those here thinking about buying the game looking a guilds to join, or is there some feeling that GWJ''s will have one? I learned last night that group formation for adventuring does not depend on the guild you join, which eliminates the concern about joining a different one than others in my Friday night group.
If GWJ won''t be forming one, the other gaming community I''m part of will be on opening day.

It''d be nice if we get enough GWJ''ers playing to form a guild, but I''m kinda doubtful that many are going to be playing GW. I guess we''ll see. I''m still not 100%, myself.
Keep in mind, in terms of playing with your friday night group, while still playing during the week. You''ll end up replaying the same missions that you''ve already passed so that you can actually play with your friends - that is, unless they actually play during the week and get as far as you. The game is pretty linear. You pass a quest that allows you access to the next quest and after you''ve done so many quests in one area, your allowed access to another area. The problem is, your friends cannot now join you because you''re several quests and areas ahead of them. So, you end up redoing missions with them. Missions you''ve probably already done more than once, just to complete. Some of the missions are fun to replay and some aren''t, imho.
Just keep that in mind. GW falls into the same trapping as other MMORPGs, unfortunately, in that you cannot play with friends who get too far ahead of you.
Are you going to be playing GW when it comes out karma?
I''m gonna play it as soon as I get the cash to play the game.

If theres a big enough interest, I may pick this up too .
I do have a few questions, since I havent followed the game much.
How are skills acquired? Is it by purchase or by leveling or by both or some other means?
Is there a level limit? I assume levels are gained through normal XP from killing and missions.
Is a single profession character limiting himself? Like is a full fledged warrior ever going to be an established as a warrior/monk? Will the warrior having a secondary profession have access to all the skills that a warrior with no secondary profession has? So I guess my question really is.... Does specializing in just one profession make you any less effective?

I''ll be playing at launch. You can do normal quests and zones with anyone and/or with NPC henchmen (the healer is especially welcome), and even pickup PVP. Guild vs. Guild battles can only be fought with members of your own guild. I''d like to see GWJ have their own, but i''d be interested in joining oldergamers, too. (like I need another forum to keep track of
)
in answering:
Skill Points are obtained by completing quests and every level. A skill point and some cash are used to buy new skills from trainers. specific skills can also be earned from npcs for completing certain quests. It will tell you in the quest descriptiong like Reward: 200 xp, Lava Font.
Level 20. The idea is that players will ramp up to the maximum level pretty quickly and then participate mostly in PVP with occasional missions to hunt eq and gain cash.
I really don''t know what gain playing a single profession has over a dual. I do not think choosing a secondary class provides any restrictions on the first. Each class has one ''attribute'' that is unique to it and you only get that attribute if you choose it as primary. For example, elementalists get Energy Storage as an attribute. if you are elem/monk, you get it. if you''re monk/elem you get the monk unique instead. otherwise, for all intents and purposes you are BOTH classes equally. there are certain builds that only choose a primary profession for their unique attribute and then use very few of their actual skills. Especially the elementalists energy storage. Say you want to be a necro with a huge amount of mana to burn. choose elem/necro and never use the elem skills. it makes for interesting builds.

I put in a good word for ya.
Congratulations on your new job.
I checked out the older gamers forum and noticed the guildwars forum is private. Does it take more than just registering to the forums to get in?
I''ll be playing the game since the begining.
I don''t think the guild thing will be too much of a problem, we can all still get on TeamSpeak and party up together and do quests, guild isn''t that much of a bonus.

For the oldergamers, to become a member, just post in the barracks that you are 25 and you have read and understand the AUP and FAQ and an admin will make you a full member and you can see all the private forums.
Nothing is required of you after that, you never have to post again if you dont like.
