Red Sox/Yankees : A Hockey game broke out last night..
Friday, April 15th, 2005 - 9:05am
So, did anyone see the brawl last night at the game? I have not seen video of it but I just wanted to know if the fan hit Sheffield first or was he just talking smack about his wife?
BTW: I do not condone violence, but I am not surprised that it happens considering the outright tribalism that the media and the teams have created around this rivalry.

There was no brawl, aalthough I''m surprised. If you watch the video it certainly looks like the fan took a swipe at Sheffield as he was trying to pick up the ball. Sheffield swiped back so he could field the ball and then amazingly didn''t lose his sh*t. Granted I''m a Yankee''s fan, but I think the fan was way out of line and Shefflied did a decent job of not getting himself in any deeper...The worst thing is that Sheffield almost whacked the woman next to the guy...that would''ve sucked.

Ok good, I only got the NY media''s take on this so I did not know if I should believe it. I am very happy that it did not turn out worse. This is a disturbing trend in sports and I am afraid someone is going to get killed.

It is a bad trend. Anyone see news on the problems in Italian soccer over the weekend? People throwing flares onto the field, the game abandoned. Crowd control is tough, but I think you have to come down very heavily on people like this fan. People doing this stuff is like shouting ""Fire"" in a theater-- you''re a danger to the people around you. I''d call it a felony and he at least gets to spend the night in jail. You have the guy on tape taking a swing-- I''d go after him with the law.

What is up with these ignorant fans?
It sounds like from news reports that the fan took the first swing while Sheffield was fielding the ball and Sheffield did a good job of restraining himself. Big props to him for that.
I watched the game last night and have seen the replay about 200 times. My take:
I think the guy was being a clown and was trying to distract Sheff while he was going for the ball, and in the process grazed him with his hand, but as he retracted got him with his elbow.
I don''t think it was a full out punch or there was intention to do anything more than distract Sheff, regardless he DID have contact with him and that guy will lose his season tickets and most likely be banned for life from the park.
Sheff got a good shove in on him, but it could have been a lot worse. I''m not a huge Sheff fan, for obvious loyalty reasons, but he for the most part controlled himself very well. Personally, I would have had a hard time not smacking the fan.
I also find it funny how analysts condemn the act, but continue to show it a 1000X and will now refer to this incident when they pump up the upcoming games....gotta get those ratings!!
Fenway security was right on top of it, too. Nice job by them.
Sheffield restrained himself well, but he really should not have done a thing. I know it''s bordering on unfair to ask him to ignore his fight-or-flight reflex in a case like this, but just let security do their job and get rid of the jerk in the stands. The Indiana/Detroit incident showed us how quickly these confrontations can get out of control.

See, this is the PROBLEM. Hype hype hype, make the public care so much about the game that emotion gets the the best of them, then toss in a few Miller Lites and watch the fireworks! Plus the Media outlets win (more viewers) and the teams win (more fans). Someone needs to put a customer agreement form at the turnstile that states:
""This is just a game. It will not destroy your life, or make your penis larger, you will move on. This is make-believe and for entertainment only. If you cannot handle that do not enter the stadium.""
At least that leaves Viagra an in for advertisements...

Mountains out of mole hills. The media is trying to make this into something bigger than it really is in order to boost ratings for the next Yanks/Sox series to be aired on national TV (which they always are).

Based on my TV, I''m starting to get the idea that ESPN will only be showing NYY/BOS for the rest of the year, and that the two teams will spend the entire season playing only each other. Seems like every time I turn on the TV and see ""Baseball"" on my cable guide, it''s NYY/BOS. It reminds me of when somebody (Barry Melrose?) years ago called ESPN Hockey Nights the NY Rangers Channel.

Yeah, really quite strange, huh? Maybe it''s because in America, we divide our sporting attention among 4 or 5 big sports: NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA Hoops, & NCAA Football. From what I gather, in Europe, soccer transcends everything else for the fans.

That''s AC Milan goalkeeper Dida being hit by a freaking flare during this week''s Champions League match between them and their hated rivals, Inter Milan. Obviously, they still have some ""issues"" to attend to, and we won''t even mention the Heysel disaster.
Anyway, Ratboy''s on point here. Moron fan, good job by Sheffield not to deck him and make a bad situation worse. The media''s hyping the freaking hell out of NYY/BOS, so this doesn''t surprise me.

Last night NPR actually had really good coverage of the DC Nationals and the history of baseball in DC. Made me wonder why real ""Sports media"" wasn''t covering it better...

No doubt. On a tangential note, My wife and I were talking about general media coverage the other week while the Pope''s health was failing. You''d think that with as many 24-hour news channels as we have, the content could be more educational and informative, rather than the usual parade of pundits, hour after hour.

Anyone have any video of this? There is one on MSNBC but you have to install like 3 things to get it to run.
ESPN Motion has it. If you use Firefox, you don''t need to deal with their plugin crap.
