Actually, they have. That ""press release"" is a fake and has been refuted by Blizzard flatly stating they are not, nor have any plans to, add a new faction. Unlike what the ""press release"" says.
This does not mean I don''t think an expansion is in the works or that it won''t be Northrend. It''s just this press release is fake. It is interesting though, apparently on early pre-release world maps the Northrend continent was there but somewhere in development was removed, so it''s a logical choice.
EDIT FOR MATT, bold mine:

Awesome news for World of Warcraft fans? Blizzard''s supposedly gonna be showing World of Warcraft: Northrend at the E3 this year. I think the folks of Blizzard are gonna be just a *tad* bit scared of me. I''ve heard people don''t take too kindly to 220lb. opinionated lunatics stalking their booths at the show. I''ll end up trying to hug one of the designers and he''ll sue for sexual harassment, just you wait.
Irvine, Calif. - Monday, March 28, 2005 - Blizzard Entertainment® today announced their plans to debut World of Warcraft®: NorthrendT the first expansion to World of Warcraft®, its award winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The expanion will add new player races, a new faction and a whole new continent for players to explore.
""We are very excited about this."" said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. ""World of WarCraft has been a tremendous worldwide success and we look forward to giving our customers much more content to explore. The expansion will further the game''s storyline in conjunction with free content that Blizzard plans to release in the coming months.""
The expansion will be aimed largely at higher level players, and will involve a higher level cap, bigger and larger dungeons both inside and outside in Northrend and elsewhere, and many new items and quests. Blizzard is also expected to announce that the game''s graphic engine has been further enhanced as planned to keep World of WarCraft in line with the latest technology.
After its debut at E3, World of Warcraft®: NorthrendT is expected to go into beta testing over the summer and be released in late 2005.
Thanks for the heads up, sflufan.
UPDATE: While this is apparently NOT an official announcement from Blizzard, an official Blizzard representative had this to say about the news: ""We have no problems with the discussion, so long as everyone is aware this was not an announcement made by Blizzard, and we are not sure where this rumor originated."" A pretty cryptic response there. Doesn''t flat out deny the news either.
I find it hard to believe that this isn''t an April fools joke. Perhaps they should get their current server base stable before they start adding more. I smell Core Combat all over again.

Somehow I don''t think 220 lbs. is quite intimidating in the gamer world.

Hell Im 240-245 and Ive lost 15-20 lbs in the last few months.
I dont doubt that an expansion is in the concept phases. I highly doubt it would be out this year. Especialy since this is Blizzard and you can tack on an extra 6 months or more to stated release dates.
Blizzard has their hands full releasing the small free content tidbits and stabilizing their servers. Of course on their announced future plans they still have, battlegrounds and hero classes to work on. I think the expansion is going to be in the concept phase for a long time. We might see it sometime in 2006.

This was originally posted on some foreign game site with all kinds of typos that easily designated it as fake. Looks like Actiontrip is trying to drum up some hits by cleaning up the spelling and posting it as their own.
Someone please post some more details for those of us behind content filters.

Bravo Actiontrip.
The origin of this stupid rumor, about 3 days old
EDIT: Scratch that, Actiontrip didn''t even bother to fix the typos. This sure sounds like an awesome ""expanion"" pack!
