Many of my friends have a PS2 and and XBox. For them, the PS2 is collecting dust while they use the XBox exclusively. As for myself, I have always enjoyed RPGs, and the PS2 is still the clear place to go for that. The PS2 also has a huge library, so you can pick up some cool, odd games like Katamari Damacy.
Here are things that come to mind that I enjoyed on the PS2:
Final Fantasy X and X-2
Dark Cloud 2
Kingdom Hearts
Shadow Hearts series
Grand Theft Auto series
Disgaea
Sly Cooper
Ratchet & Clank 2
Lots of people are enjoying God of War, but that's not usually my kind of thing.

Disagaea''s supposed to be incredible, isn''t it? Real life-sapping stuff.

Sorry, I should have said I don''t intend this to be a main machine. Generally my Xbox gets most love (certainly in number of games bought), but I''ve been spreading my time between my GC and PC recently. The PS2 would be bought *only* for the must-have titles that won''t appear on any other system. I realise that might not be all that many.

I think it can really bring out the obsessive-compulsive in you. There''s always, always something to do. It''s fun, but can get a bit repetitive when you''re leveling up. Some people, of course, don''t care about the repetitive part. Personally, I finished the main part of the game with great enjoyment, looked around a little more, and called it quits. There are also the other two games in the series, La Pucelle and Phantom Brave. They are also quite good, but not quite as great as Disgaea.
Edit: Also, I think all the titles in my original list are exclusive to the PS2. For anything that''s multiplatform, I think of them as XBox games, ''cause that''s where I''ll play them.

Disgaea is... ... odd.
When I first got it, it seemed... odd. Final Fantasy Tactics had flavored my expectations of a sprite-based RPG. I stopped somewhere before finishing the story and started playing other stuff. I picked it up again a month or so ago... (EDIT Since then) I have sunk over 200 hours into the game (EDIT 450 total). I''m again hitting a plateau, where to really advance I would need to power-level a huge chunk of my characters. That or powerlevel some of my items to access bigger and better items. I think the realization is hitting me now that there is no end in sight. The story is becoming a hindrance to my progress. I''m on cycle 4 (mainly because finishing some of the side-areas counts as beating the game!). But I''m rambling...
The game is worth the price of admission, if you''re into that sort of thing. If you enjoyed FFTactics, or maybe even FFX, then Disgaea will sink its hooks into you before too long.
Other PS2 games I really enjoy: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
Tetris Worlds (but I believe that is available for just about ANY systemn).
God of War (though after trying GOD mode I may have to build up my skillz a bit before I''m ready to face THAT level of humiliation again!).
Katamari Damacy.
PS games:
Tekken 3 - Fond memories of sitting in my friends attic playing through the entire weekend.
Final Fantasy Tactics - I have yet to beat this game because I keep switching to ""Harvest Skills"" mode.

I''ve got a WoW sub''. Does that make Disagae redundant?
HatchetJob.com - a netcast about more than videogames.
*grin* That''s like saying: I have a computer, does that make my TV redundant?
It''s a different ride! I like the turn-based aspect of Disgaea, which is probably why I keep coming back to it. You can be doing just about anything else... if you need a break just drop the controller and walk away.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
In my case, it almost does. After failing once, I''ve never bothered to see if my TV can actually receive TV channels. I use it only for gaming. If I watch TV it''s on the house''s general set; though these days I normally spend my evenings on WoW.
HatchetJob.com - a netcast about more than videogames.
But as you''ve stated yourself... despite not using the TV for broadcast signals you still find a use for it! Now consider Disgaea as offering other uses than replacing your WoW subscription. Such as: Server downtimes. Disgaea requires electricity only! General Asshattery from playing with other people (though I hear WoW does a good job of minimizing this). Disgaea is a single player experience.
My TV''s tuner is actually broken. The only reason I own it is BECAUSE the tuner is broken.... Because I hate commercials. REALLY hate commercials. But I digress. Disgaea will not replace the experience of Wow. But it will offer its own experience which may be superior depending on your gaming tastes. Your mileage(edit: kilometerage) may vary.
Edit 2: Oh yes... and if your TV does not accept NTSC signals then forget about Katamari Damacy. No PAL release is planned for that title. You''ll have to wait for the sequel which should be coming soon! (I hope!)

I skimmed. It''s worth it. Damn good games.

I do recommend getting a PS2. Lots of great cheap games to pick up.
Some PS2-only games:
). It''s a bit long in the tooth now but SOCOM III is coming and I''m extremely excited.
* SOCOM II is the best online console game I''ve ever played (that''s not American football
* ICO should not be missed by anyone.
* Katamari Damacy is great
* God of War is what I''m currently playing, great game
* Frequency and Amplitude rock
* If you like platformers, you can get a lot of mileage out of the three Ratchet & Clank, three Jak, and two Sly Cooper games (not my thing personally, but certainly among the very best of their class)
* Devil May Cry (original) is fun. DMC2 not so much. DMC3 supposedly good but brutally hard, haven''t tried it myself yet
Of course there are other great PS2 games, but are no longer exclusive to PS2 (like the GTA games - well San Andreas still is, but not for all that much longer). But these games are PS2 only.

A huge list from Edwin! I wondered what was taking so long...
One on that list that I really should have mentioned is ICO. Great, unusual game. There is a sequel of sorts in the works as well, which looks similarly beautiful. I enjoyed Xenosaga as well, but I can see how the hugely long cutscenes would bug some people. While I liked Escape from Monkey Island, I''d hate for it to be anybody''s introduction to the Monkey Island series, as it''s probably my least favorite of the lot.
Edit: Just to add on to Legion''s comments, I don''t generally go for platformers myself, but Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper were so good that I overcame my anti-platformer bias. Jak never did it for me, though. Too many annoyances.

Yeah man freakin Disgaea is awesome. Best strategy game on PS2 in my opinion. Whenever I play that game I go into a zen-like trance and next thing I know 10 hours have passed but it feels like I have only played for an hour. That reminds me I need to go back and finish the game.
BTW PS2 is worth it, you''ve probably got another 12-16 months before PS3 comes out.
EDIT: Geekiest use of PSP yet. Converting the Disgaea strategy guide PDF to jpeg and putting it on your PSP so you can be away from the computer and look at the strategy guide.
R-type Final is a good game to have for PS2.
Killzone... may not be Halo killer but sure is a nice game and I had a lot fun! Besides Luger's melee attack is the best there is in FPS. It''s similar to the new SC knife attack... but it rules!

As the owner of both a PS2 and an XBOX, I don''t feel that there are enough PS2 only games to make it worth a purchase. If my PS2 was stolen tomorrow, I would miss Katamari Damacy, and I would wish that Rockstar would hurry up with the XBOX port of San Andreas, but that would be it.

I think the following are all PS2-exclusive, and definitely worth a try:
Katamari Damacy
Amplitude and Frequency
Karaoke Revolution - requires a USB mic
Rez - try with this attachment (link NSFW), if you can find one
That''s freaky... I was just going to ask about Rez but didn''t feel like hijacking the thread! Is there a good/safe/reliable place to pick up a copy?
As for the attachment... *grin* I think my GF would get a huge kick out of it!

On eBay, for about $80.
Seeing as this game is completely and totally out-of-print, and thus any money spent would not go back to the developer/publisher, I may very well pirate it...

PS2 is still THE platform for strategy rpg. I liked Disgaea but the unfriendly camera angles and extreme PS1 graphics eventually turned me off. Front Mission 4 is another story though, I still play that a lot. Ratchet&Clank and MLB2006 have also made me glad I hung on to my PS2. I am also salivating at God of War.
I''d say if you''re on the fence, and cant think of a game you MUST have on the PS2 - forget it, buy 3 games for your xbox instead.
I have a copy of Rez and a Trance Vibrator. Aside from the off-label use, the official use is pretty cool, too. It plays a counter vibration to the controller vibration, and if you put it behind your neck or back it adds a new rhythmic aspect to the game. Play it in front of a big screen with damage turned off & it is a great way to veg out.
I don''t use my PS2 that much, but there are a number of exclusive titles that I am happy to have. Don''t overlook older gems like War of the Monsters and Robot Alchemic Drive.

Like anything, it all comes down to the software, right?
As other people have said, if you''re looking for RPGs or platformers, then the PS2 is a must have. Right now, I''d say there are at least a few dozen games worth owning/playing, and most of them are either Greatest Hits price or otherwise fairly inexpensive. I haven''t been playing mine much lately, since most multi-platform games find life on my xbox, but there are enough good games to justify it, esp at 149$. (I realize this value equation might be different in the UK-- with the weakness of the $$, maybe you should just import one?

Damn. I''m cruising this ''ebay'' thing... and I''ve come to the conclusion that ebay does not fall under my good/safe/reliable standards for making purchases over $20! In fact, one person is asking $175 dollars for this game! Wow! Opportunism at its finest! Where are all the resellers of conscience?
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
Yes, eBay is for idiots, most of the time.
You think the price for REZ is bad? I sold my copy of ""DRAGONBALL GT: FINAL BOUT"" for the playstation 1 to some guy a few years back for $265. The game sucked, but it was hot, and if someone wants to make my car payment for me, viva la capitalism.

I still can''t beleive the idiot bought the game off of me. To think I got it for free from a customer when I worked in GameStop since he couldn''t trade it in due to it being import.

I was so excited over FM4 cause I played the hell out of FM3 for the PS1. However FM4 while from a feature and story standpoint is awesome, the enemy AI just ruined it for me. Also the fact that you have no idea what you are going up against were 2 major problems that made me stop playing.
I don''t recommend getting a PS2-- I''m one of those people who just sold mine. If you want a console to pair with your xbox, I''d consider getting a gamecube! It has loads of outstanding proprietary games, although they don''t get talked about much on the internet for whatever reason.
I''ve been thinking of getting one for Pikmin 2 alone. Mario Kart Double Dash is the best party race game ever, Super Smash Bros is loads of fun for the first hundred hours or so, and then there''s the new Silent Hill which I believe is only on the cube.
Yeah, but I can overlook that stuff because of the GIANT FRIGGIN'' ROBOTS!
I am a sucker for mechs of any kind as long as they are large and well-armed. Ah, to have my own Atlas...
Already got a cube. I''m playing Res 4 at the moment, but the cube has been almost unused compared to the Xbox.

I got a PS2 and it''s all I have. I''m happy with it and don''t need any other systems. The only real advantage that it has over the other systems is the RPG selection. I own FFVII, FF:Tactics, FFX, Arc the Lad:TotS, Xenosaga, Wild Arms 3, and there are many more. So yeah, I''m basically just mimicing the comments of others here.
