Brother's in Arms Gone Gold

From the Wargamer:

Ubisoft announced today the completion of Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, Gearbox's upcoming World War II first-person shooter. The game has now officially gone gold and will be released on the Xbox on March 1st, the PC on March 8th, and the Playstation 2 on March 15th. The game has received considerable attention due to Gearbox's attention to detail and authenticity: the game recreates the scenarios encountered by members of the 101st Airborne ("The Screaming Eagles" - see Wild Bill's related historical article), right down to the environments recreated from pictures and maps as well as the names and faces of those very soldiers. The game's campaign allows players to control squads using accurate "fire and movement" tactics, while the online component promises ten multiplayer levels and missions.

Brothers in Arms will be priced at $50 when it appears on store shelves.

So are most folks getting this for the PC right?

I almost forgot about this (thank you mmorpgs) and now I can be surprised again! Thanks for the update Donan. This, R:TW (just got it) and Pirates will be excellent breaks from WoW.

This is the one where you always control a little AI squad right? And by always, I mean even in multiplayer. That sounds interesting, even though I have use for another WW2 game as much as... something not very useful like... this post.

I know we had several discussions on GWJ about ""...not another WW2 game"" and for good reason. But, this gameplay looks pretty fresh and the graphics are very nice. I also have not played a WW2 game in a while so I am ready for one.

Well I''m hoping MP will be good, but the SP is what I''m looking forward too. From my understanding they''ve really tried to make this as real as possible (I think the American Legion gave it a high praise) in that you can loose folks, or have them serious wounded and not come back to the Unit. Or slightly and return etc. I.e. you can''t play Audy Murphy or you want have a squad left. Accurate depictions of locales etc. I''m really hoping it comes thru.

Wow, a whole 10 multiplayer missions? No, come on, we don''t need that many, 5 is plenty.

This game looks like it can be awesome, or a complete flop. The AI is the key and if your squadmates are a bunch of stupid monkeys then I can see this getting *very* annoying quickly. I do hope for a PC demo, but I don''t have my hopes up considering it is a console port.

I will never stop loving good WWII games, although there''s a lot more of the war to be covered.

As for this, I smell a weekend of gaming and Band of Brothers approaching.

Vietnam got royally screwed, when compaired with WW2. WW2 got some of the best shooters in recent years, where the only decent Vietnam game has been... Vietcong.

I think that the guerrilla aspect of Vietnam allows for some of the best gameplay possibilities (certainly better than anything found in the classical WW2 settings.)

If you''ve got to make a WW2 game, I say at least set it in the far east, or in Russia or something. It''s not like war is less compelling or dramatic if you''re not in boring-ass Band-of-Brothers-style scenery.

I would take a Philipines or Burma campaign over all this Europe stuff anyday!

This is a good X-Box review. But I hope most folks get it
for the PC. For one thing, probably more chance for some clever folks to find a way for a more varied MP play. But
graphics and such too most like. Anyway, show of hands
on what hardware the folks are buying this for.

EDIT: Geesh. Forgot to thank Pred too for link to
a great review.

I would be happy with just singleplayer but it sounds like it has cool MP as well, so that is an added bonus.

Also, does anyone know if the sky is dynamic or static? I am guessing static but it sure looks nice in some shots.

No need guys, any idiot with a net connection (like me) can link to IGN.

Anyway, the only thing about the review that really made me curious was the reference to gameplay style. This ""suppression meter"" thing wasn''t something I was thrilled with in FSW, mainly because I felt FSW''s game mechanics turned the game from a Tactical Simulation into a well-acted, military-themed puzzle game. Cover in that was absolute, and i''m hoping it''s not the same here. The review notes that you can shoot people behind cover, and i''m praying that there are many different situations that will give you many different things to think about and ways to react, and not constantly stuffing ""Base of Fire - Flank - Eliminate"" down our throats. As a realism freak, i''m not knocking that in the slightest, it''s a hugely important part of small-unit tactics, but I don''t want it to be the only way I can achieve goals. If I can''t toss grenades to soften up defenses, or simply overwhelm an outmached opponent with fire and take him down that way, I''ll be dissapointed.

I believe the reviewer noted that suppresion meter could be turned off.

I agree. But I''ve seen some WW II Vet org''s praising this, so I can''t imagine they won''t have the many time used ''rain of grenades'' that was used. And definitely ''supression fire''. With small arms and the tank (wonder if it will have ''flame thrower'' aspect?) I''m a bit surprised to hear it is going to be much like FSW. I enjoyed that game, but I was hoping for more of a GR type where you lead your fire team, but can jump to them individually if need be (and not, as noted in the review, just because you main guy died.)

Yeah what''s the general consensus? Are most of you going to pick this up for the PC or should I grab it on the Xbox so I can play it on Live with ya?

Let''s get a running tally going of who''s getting it for what. If I can wait two weeks to pick up the PC version, that''s awesome as it means I might be able to grab fight night round 2 later this week.

The real decision on whether I wait for the PC version is this:

Does it have true 16x9 support? Or is it ""stretched"" ?

I fell victim to the hype and picked up the xbox version of BiA yesterday. Its pretty intense but has yet to supplant Call of Duty as my favorite WWII shooter. The pace so far is very much like Full Spectrum Warrior.

Nefarious- from what I can tell it does not have native 16:9 support.
