Whats a good 'arcade' flight sim (PC only)?
Saturday, July 26th, 2003 - 11:24pm
Hi All,
I am hooked on the jets in Desert Combat and can't get enough of flying around.
I was wondering if someone could recomend a good arcade style flight sim for the PC.
Basically something like Comanche 4 with planes instead of choppers ![]()
Many thanks

Crimson Skies?

How important is eye candy for you? Because there have been a lot of good arcade like sims (i.e. not very sim-like) in this genre, but most have been earlier than the latest games...just want some clarification before I throw any suggestions out there.

That''s what I was gonna say too. Fun as hell and only on the pc for the time being.

Okay, forgot about Crimson Skies, that was great, something like that would be good.
As for Eye Candy, well I do appreciate good eye candy, though It doesn''t have to be the best, just things like smoke trails on missles and decent explosions, apart from that I don''t need ultra realistic looking ground, planes etc. The gameplay is where its at.
I am happy with the graphics in Desert Combat, not too sure where that sits on the scale.
So Crimson Skies 2 would be good
Crimson Skies gets my vote as well. You could also try out IL-2 Forgotten Battles and turn off all realism settings. It still is quite ''sim-ish'' then, but IL-2 simply happens to be a great game.
Snake Eyes, I''m pretty sure, though not positive, that Crimson Skies 2 is an Xbox only game?

CS2 is X-Box only. M$ is starting to make their franchise games X-Box only.

I wonder how they are going to pull that off with the Age of Empires series...

I meant like CS, MechWarrior, and to a lesser extent HALO, the kind of franchises that are console-friendly. Stuff like AoE, RoN, and FS would be impossible to do on the X-Box.

Okay so no Crimson Skies 2 or any of the Ace Combat games for the PC
What do we have?
Well Novalogic (guys who made Commanche 4) are famous for their actiony sims, so take a look at their webiste. I''m sure a few of them are fun.
Of course you could always abandon reality altogether and go for some space sims which are always good fun.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Crimson Skies is very good. Novalogic also had some fun Jet sims, like the F-22 sims and the F-16 and Mig-29 sims from some time back. All of these can probably purchased fairly cheaply these days.
Thanks Veloxi. Gonna check out those games and see if I can find them.
Seeing as Novalogic did Comanche I think they might be just what I am looking for
Always happy to help. Flight sims are my specialty.
OMG. I just found out about Lock on: http://www.lo-mac.com/index.php
This game I gotta play. You can dial all the sim features down to make it arcade like. I can''t wait for it to come out
Heh, you and me both, pal. I got to toy around with it at E3, and when I was able to fly the A-10, I nearly wet myself...it was THAT beautiful...I nearly cried as well...I''ve been wanting to fly the A-10 for YEARS, especially since EA cancelled Jane''s A-10 a while back. This is gonna be one GREAT sim...
If you''re patient, Snake, you could wait for Secret Weapons Over Normandy by the folks at Totally Games.

I hate to say this, but I prefer the ''modern'' types of planes.
Yeah its not the same as the good ol days, but I just can''t help but drool over some of the cool planes and their weapons.
Veloxi: I watched the movie of the A10 and I know exactly what you mean. I can''t wait until the first time I press that trigger.
Yep, LO looks great. I am getting a joystick so I can finish Vice City but it looks like I need one to play Lock On as well, any suggestions?

Don''t ask me, I''ll tell you to get the Saitek X-45 for $80, which is a lot more than you''ll need.
Flux: You are probably better off with a Joypad. I have the thrustmaster firestorm dual power and its pretty good, though if you have a Playstation its probably better to get one of those USB adapters for it.
Veloxi: that looks like a sweet stick. Unfortunately I don''t think I can get approval from the wife for something like that.
What do you think about something with force feedback? My old Wingman Interceptor is starting to drift and show its age and I was thinking of gettting a new stick with force feedback. Or is the support in most games too poor to pay the extra? Any suggestions?
Yeah, Veloxi I wasn''t looking for a stick that costs that much
I am still undecided on what to get....

<bumpity bump bump> I found this pack at Gogamer that you might find interesting. All of those games are particularly ""arcadey,"" but a lot of fun.
Link just takes you to gogamer and not the pack, what is it?
Xbox Live: Kooter06
That''s odd, well try this link. If that doesn''t work, go to the Blow Out Deals link on their main page and scroll down until you see the Air Attack Pack for $9.90. It includes several excellent Novalogic sims and Joint Strike Fighter, which was also a lot of fun.
