Anybody Play Boardgames?
Friday, July 25th, 2003 - 7:23pm
After getting together with a bunch of friends last weekend and playing Risk all night, I decided to go check of the WotC store at the mall and see what else they have. To my suprise they had that Civilization boardgame I had read about last year. I'm wondering if anyone around here owns this or has played it?
Any other suggestions for fun board games would be appreciated as well. I already have Axis and Allies adn Risk so what other strategy boardgames are fun?

Cranium is surprisingly fun with a large group...but there''s not a lot of strategy there.

Man I love the look of that Risk 2210 AD with all the little mechs and stuff. I so badly just want to buy it and set up wars on my kitchen table or something. I would never find a person to play the actual game with, though. Nor do I think I''d even have the patience to figure it out. But damn if that doesn''t look so cool.

I played the Civ boardgame. Prepare for a long night. Honestly you have to be really patient for this game. It''s well thought out and pretty strategic but takes like forever especially when you are all new players. A not so deep appreach which features only Europe up until the middle ages is the game renaissance. Takes only half as long
.
If you want something more lightweighted but that still takes a long time, I''d advise Junta. In this game the players are the head of a banana republic. One is the president and the others his ministers. The goal is to put as much money aside from the subventions you get each round as possible on your bank account.
. The game takes like 6 hours to finish but is a lot of fun.
Naturally the game features assassinations, putsches and some fair amount of forming allies and trying to overthrow the president, because that guy hands out the donations each round, and you sure as well want to be in that position
A game more in the manner of Civ is Galactiv Empire, I think it is called that. A friend of mine playes this regularly and he says its the best strategy game out there. I''ll ask him for the correct Title and update this one here.

Shogun. You will not be disappointed.
Also, I''ve heard good things about Settlers.
Thanks Chrisg. You make it sound kind of dull? I''ll check out your other suggestions.
LeapingGnome, I saw Showgun out there and admit I was cuious about it. It made me think about the Koei game Nobunaga''s Revenge. Thanks for your suggestions too.

The Lord of the Rings boardgame is good. As is Lock and Load. But, for popcorn wargames, nothing beats the holy trinity of Axis and Allies, Fortress America, and Shogun

No it is not dull. But it sure needs your full attention. And I am not that kind of guy when it comes to boardgames, except for chess

Risk is a classic of course. I would highly suggest getting the One world Dominion cards if you can, it really changes the way you play the game. Axis and Allies is great as well, especially with the World at War expansion.

Axis and Allies is probably my most played board game. Don''t play it too often though.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Well, when I stopped by the mall and picked up a copy of AOW Shadow Magic today, I also stopped by WotC and decided to grab Shogun. Wow, this looks like it''s going to be a lot of fun. Look''s fairly complicated right off the bat too. Gonna have to get my friends and givve this baby a go.
On a side note AOW SM is only $29.99 at EB and looks like it''s going to be pretty fun. I''ve never played the first two but I know they''ve had some great reviews. Can''t wait to get off tonight!.......hmm, that dosen''t sound right.

If you''re interested in playing a strategy game with people who don''t play strategy games (i.e. women, children, and the elderly) I really recommend Settlers of Catan. The average game takes about 75-90 minutes, and if you enjoy it and want to go deeper, Cities and Knights of Catan is an excellent expansion that really takes the game to a higher level but keeps the same spirit and skills of the basic game.
Frigga and I play the 2-player card-game version of Settlers all the time at the local public house, in the back yard, in hospital waiting rooms... She always derided my ""little games"" with all the ""little men"", but she''s hooked on this.
There''s a lot of good and free play by email services for your favorite board games. I recently played Axis and Allies by email with an old friend; it got so dire I was checking my email about six times an hour.
We used to play alot of Axis and Allies...that was a great game...
I was looking to pick up the Age of Mythology game at some point.. hopefully they make it appeal to non gamers too
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

The only board game I tend to play once in a while is Settlers of Catan. I don''t own it, but some friends of mine play it regularly. If you haven''t checked out the game yet, you can play a (somewhat simplified) Java version here.
Civ the boardgame is definitely a deep game & takes time (by time I mean more than one play session) to get the hang of. It''s also well worth the effort, I think.
There are also 2 sets of rules Standard & Advanced, the Standard rules being a stripped down version of the Advanced rules. The Standard rules are very similar to the computer game. I''ve played the Standard rules about 5 times with one on one with a friend & its always been a blast. The games usually last 1-2 hours. Only had 2 games where we had 3 people playing & those games lasted at least 4-5 hours each.
I still havent tried the Advanced rules but it looks to be quite entertaining as well. Only problem is scheduling enough freetime to do it. Probably need to request like a weeklong vacation from work for it.
Oh & as for Risk 2210 a friend of mine has it as well & its a blast. I just love being able to fight battles on the moon as well as underwater.
If anyone is interested, below is a link to a PDF of the Game Manual. It will explain most things way better than I ever could

How does Risk 2210 compare to Risk classic? We almost organized a Risk game at work today, I might suggest Risk 2210 as another reason to play.
Also welcome to the forums VicD!

I''d love to hear more about it too. The original Risk owns!

Best board game of course though was
Talisman
I think I might still have it somewhere.. I had every single expansion too..

Another vote for 2210, I almost talked my fiance into getting it last weekend so I would like to know more.

Same here. My wife and I like to play the original Risk when we can find someone to humiliate... I mean play with. We have a ""deluxe"" set of somekind. Cool fold-out board with an old-style map. Nice metal pieces for infantry, calvary, and cannons. Very nice.
Having the board, pieces and sometimes even the rules change over the years can be frustrating. We played a game of Statego over at a friend''s house and noticed that they had changed the values of all the pieces... the values were backwards (the Field Marshal had a value of ''10'' instead of ''1'').
But while in the store the other day, I noticed that they have released some ""nostalgia"" editions of Statego and other games (Monopoly, Sorry, and some others I don''t remember). They come in these cool wooden boxes and feature the original artwork and rules. Very nice.
One of the board games i like most is the Lord of the Ring-Boardgame from ""R. Knizia"" (the game is a bit older and was made before the movies came out... the movie-licensed games are not that good)
Its played coop (and can be played even alone) and it has very balanced game mechanics.
There are also two expansions out, in one of them one guy gets to play Sauron and all others the good guys, sounds interesting but i havent tried it.
Another great game we play often is Settlers of Catan (i''m surprised its well known outside Germany), its the only strategy game our wifes likes to play (beside mentioned LotR-game)
And then there are games i like but since our wifes dont like them we never play them (because when our wifes are not present, me and my friends play computer games
)
One of them is ""Talisman"", its a Role-Playing-Boardgame where you have a char with some special features and you get him stronger by fighting and exploring
Then ""Cosmic Encounter"", an abstract space-strategy whith a lot of intrigues. Very good game with a high replayability.
Also a game where friendships can come to a test is ""Junta"", chrisg mentioned it.... it has a very high ""coolness"" factor.
IMO, if you like/enjoy classic Risk you will feel the same way about 2210. It''s essentially the same game with a futuristic twist to the rules.
The main differences that I can remember off the top of my head are, new pieces called commanders (Land, Space, Naval, Nuclear & Diplomat) which you can purchase & allow you to attack & defend with a d8. The main map allows you to fight underwater if you have the Naval commander. An additional map of the moon to fight on, after you acquire the Space commander.
This link to the Risk 2210 webpage will explain the new rules much better than me. It even has has a flash demo that shows you how the games first few rounds go. I also, highly recommend checking out the Rules PDF. or the FAQ. All of these links will give you much better & clearer info than my alcohol soaked brain can.
Hope this helps.

I''ve played Advanced Civilization a couple times now and find it to be a entertaining and well balanced game, though also a very long game. But to its credit, it isn''t a game I want to quit just because it is getting late. Some of the things I like about it are:
1) Not much downtime (turns cycle through players and there is a lot to consider). The longest delays tend to be the player with the most units each turn as they also have to move first (not an advantage) which means they both have the most to do and have to try guessing what everyone else will be doing. But everyone else is also needing to figure out what they will be doing so it usually isn''t a big deal. And by the time the last player is moving (when everyone else is just waiting for them) that player will finish pretty fast because they don''t have to guess and only have a few units anyway.
2) Gameplay on the board is really the 2nd derivative of your progress. Meaning that what you do on the board doesn''t set your progress towards winning, or even set the rate at which you are making progess, but rather adjusts the rate at which your rate of progress is being adjusted. Or even more simpily, having a truly horrible turn doesn''t mean much in the long run, likewise one really great turn isn''t going to win you the game. It requires a series of good or bad turns to really effect you overall score.
3) Adding more players doesn''t slow the game down, in fact it actually speeds it up somewhat (I''ve only played 2 and 3 player, can''t recommend playing 2 again, but 3 player is pretty good and I''m thinking 5 player would be optimal).
I do put Advanced Civilization on my short list of games I want to play. Some others are Merchant of Venus, Empire Builder (or any of the other map variants), and Robo Rally.
I''ve also played Risk 2210 AD and it was ok. Probably better than playing the original Risk, but not significantly so.
I''ll also give the LotR boardgame two thumbs up. Although not on my short list, if the others want to play it, I know I''ll have a good time.
I do highly recommend www.boardgamegeek.com for more information about boardgames than you ever wanted to know...
I''ve played the Lord of the Rings game three times, and I really enjoyed it. It''s a strange experience for me, I''d never played a cooperative board game before, but it''s a nice antidote if you''ve been fiercely competing for a while. Just because it''s cooperative, don''t expect it to be easy, however. It''s actually very difficult- at least for us, we''ve never won. And there''s real drama playing out with every role of the die.
Cosmic Encounter is an excellent game, but be sure of your friendships before you go into it, it''s easy to hurt people''s feelings, or be wounded yourself.
There''s another good Eagle Game called War, Age of Imperialism. It plays like a more complex version of Risk, with the addition of resources and buildable infrastructure. It can be a long game, but very fun. Like all the Eagle games, it can be played with varying complexity, from fairly straightforward to very intricate.
Another game that the wives might like is Puerto Rico.
Could someone tell me more about Talisman, please?

However, board games do require people other than oneself to play.
Damn, and I was just getting good at playing with myself. Oh, wait...
