Gamespy does KOTOR 2, PC style

Dude, if you don't know where it's from by now, you're too drunk.

Unfortunately, as good as the storyline and basic gameplay are, there are more than a few issues that keep this game from reaching the bar set by the first KotOR. The first: bugs. There a lot of them; most are just annoying, but a few are deadly. While I didn't experience any total crashes, it happened to our managing editor twice and neither of us have underpowered systems. A more annoying bug was one that caused the game to fold down onto my Windows taskbar whenever it switched out of the game engine in order to show an FMV cutscene. There was a weird bug that caused in-engine cutscenes to be blurry if your character was running with Force Speed just before the game shifted to the scene.

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Maybe I should cancel that pre-order now. Sounds even buggier than Vampire Bloodlines.

Here''s the thing, though. Despite all the annoyances I''ve just listed, this is still a great game. In my review of the first game, I mentioned that I sat and played the game for eight straight hours. Well, the exact same thing happened this time. The story and RPG elements of the game are just that good. The game compels you, keeps pulling you onward to the next revelation, the next philosophical discussion, the next plot twist, and for all the times I cursed at my monitor when the hinky A.I. screwed something up, there was never a question in my mind that I wasn''t going to finish this game. I simply had to find out how the story ended, and while there were some stumbling blocks along the way, I''m extremely glad I took the trip.

While some of the bugs do sound bogus (especially the blurry cutscene one, but more importantly, the crappy AI), something has to be said for a game that the story is so good you don''t care that the code is buggy.

However, with the price of games being what they are . . .

I guess we''ll soon find out how dedicated Obsidian is to patching their products...

I''m glad to hear that the story and RPG elements are top-notch though! It seems Obsidian is off to a great start (gameplay-wise, at least). Now for Neverwinter Nights 2.

I''m still playing through Vampire, despite some really annoying bugs (even a few that have forced me to reload the game). So I''ll probably enjoy this anyway. Sadly I''ll be punished yet again for wanting to play it on my PC.

Those bugs don''t sound too bad after playing through Vampire. At least none of them force you to reboot before playing. I may pick this up after I get through with Vampire.

I won''t be paying full price for this. Then again, the ""scourge of all humanity"" (WoW) has dulled any excitement I may have felt for any other game. Maybe in a few months they''ll have the problems patched, and I can pick it up for 25-35 bucks. Yeah, that sounds like a good arrangement...

Worse than the bugs, however, and far more inexplicable, is the truly god-awful A.I. possessed by the characters. I can''t count the number of times my companions got in my way while I was trying to maneuver through a tight spot. During combat, I''d be getting pummeled because one of my characters decided not to bother getting involved in the fight and was two rooms away staring at the wall. One mission in particular had me tearing my hair out, where I had to escort a Czerka employee out of a military base. It would have been easy (considering I had killed all of the monsters already), except that the employee just refused to follow me. He would take a few steps and then stop. I was reduced to continually asking him to follow me again and again, moving him a few steps each time toward the exit. Thanks, that''s 20 minutes of my life I''m never getting back.

Cripes. They regurgitated the original review from the Xbox one. Bogus. It smacks of a lazy ""review"" process on Gamespot''s part.

And I have to say as someone who finished the Xbox version I pretty sure the reviews didn''t finish the game.

Unless the PC version is vastly different at the end than the Xbox version it has serious flaws which should be at least mentioned in a review.

Been trying to play it for the last few hours for so, and wow, I''ve never seen a game with this many show-stopping bugs before. It seems like every ten or twenty minutes or so, the entire program locks up. This has rush-job written all over it.

Well, that''s it; this game is going back on the shelf until eitehr a work-around or a patch is developed. It''s sad when yet another highly-anticipated RPG for the PC is brought down by major bugs.

A lot of it is due to the fact that the game has compatibility issues with ATI cards. Every driver I''ve tried has failed to resolve the problem.

Edit: In fact, if you have an ATI card, don''t buy the game, not until there''s a massive fix released. It seems that Obsidian and LEC launched the game knowing full well there was going to be problems with users with ATI cards, but put the game on the shelves anyway. Ridiculous.

Well that does suck, but I have an NVIDIA card so I''m probably going to pick it up. I''ll let you know if it works any better.

That seriously bites though, if it weren''t universally hailed as a really good game otherwise I probably wouldn''t bother. But as I just played all the way through Vampire and loved it, despite having to turn on noclip at times, I think I''ll be okay with this.

Really? It runs just fine on my 9600XT, except for what appears to be a memory leak that makes me restart the game every couple of hours to get rid of stuttering.

Crashes, lock-ups, video errors, AI idiocy, corrupted save files; I''d call this a screwed pooch. I guess this means I''m taking NWN 2 off my anticipated list, if this is what Obsidian is capable of.

I haven''t had one bug yet. It doesn''t really feel polished either, but I haven''t had it crash or screw up. Though the AI is dirt stupid. And the environments pretty generic (even worse than the first game). The story is way more improved, but there''s a sh*tload of it. I''m only on the second chapter so I have no idea if it''s worth it yet.

And no widescreen support, even though the first one on PC supported widescreen.

Just to contribute personal experiences, I''m on four CTDs so far in about ten hours of play. I''m not happy about it, but it''s not making me put the game away. The CTDs are almost exlusively when loading a new area or playing a cutscene, which is fortunate because the game auto-saves before both of these. It''s only a matter of restarting the game, and not an issue of time lost.

This is with a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Well, to paraphrase a line: anytime bugs and errors gets in the way of fun, fun loses. Probably took me about double the time to beat it with all the lock-ups and corrupted save files (which was even more annoying than the other errors), and that probably made the ending more annoying and disappointing than it probably was. Now, I''m not so eager for a sequel.

Edit: That''s not to say that KOTOR 2 doesn''t have its moments. Kreia''s probably the most interesting EU Star Wars character since Grand Admiral Thrawn himself, and the Handmaiden is 10 times hotter than Bastila (would have been nice to see Mira or Visas strut around in lingerie for comparison). Now if only the plot didn''t feel like it was rushed faster than a golf game in a thunderstorm...

Double Edit: Well, apparently there''s quite a bit more to the game if you obssessively explore every little nuance and facet...

* Apparently, you can convert Atton, Bao Dur, Mira, and Handmaiden/Disciple (they depend on gender) into Jedi. I only got Atton and Handmaiden to tap into the Force my first time through. This all depends on your influence on them, so it kind of behooves you, the Exile, to spend as much time with them as possible.

* No matter what, you can''t get your old saber back from Atris. That crazy bitch...

* If you have a high enough computer skill, you can access a message in T3''s core from Bastila to Revan, if Revan was a light-side male.

* If you have a high enough influence, you can get Kreia to admit that she was both a Jedi Master and a Sith Lord, where she shows you a cutscene that illustrates her rather brutal fall.

There are quite a few more cool little things than that, too. I hadn''t known about the extra cutscene, though. Hmmmm...

I''ve always thought that Bioware party members lacked the character of Black-Isle ones. Any party configuration in KotOR2 is going to be interesting, in some way. I especially liked the ''return'' of a certain party member from KotOR1. Anyone who didn''t play the first one would be none the wiser. A nice little nod.
