Nintendo illustrates the old maxim of “be careful what you wish for.” For most of this year I’ve been peeved about the positively paltry prospectus of playable products on this portable plaything, only to be pounded and pummeled by positively paramount purchases in the past pair of pay-periods. As if Stardew Valley and Super Mario Odyssey weren’t already too much awesome in too short a time, this week sees the Switch release of the two best games of 2016: Doom and Farming Simulator 17. I’m genuinely curious about the Doom release, because I can’t imagine playing it with a controller. Farming Simulator 17, though, I can absolutely imaging playing with a controller. It would be my game of the week if I hadn’t already chosen it as my Game of the Week on two other systems.

Instead, I’m going to pick the PC release of Nioh, because I wanted to play it when it came out but it being released on the PC means I’ll eventually be able to play it for much less money. I’m mercenary that way.

Nioh gets my nod for Game of the Week, if only to confound those of you who thought for sure I’d pick Moose Invasion.

2017 has been the year in which I try to understand Sonic the Hedgehog. Or rather, that I try to understand what this franchise has done to gain such a fervent fanbase even from those that never owned a SEGA Genesis as a child. Even when I was young and visiting my best friend after school, Sonic was one of the less interesting games on the system he could have played. Toejam & Earl, Dynamite Headdy, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis and Primal Rage were much more interesting titles. I've watched in-depth analyses of the original Genesis games that have helped explain the appeal of those now-retro titles, but still my eye goes to the flaws that always kept me at bay.

I suppose what I mean to say is I choose Sonic Forces as my pick of the week, as I consider it an underdog in a franchise I've never understood. Normally Sonic Forces would be approached by a casual dismissal from me as another 3D Sonic title bound to disappoint, but I feel like there's something different for fans this year. Perhaps it's Sonic Mania, promising a revisit of favorite levels while also delivering new ones.

Then again, Sonic Team couldn't even deliver a demo pleasing to the fans, applying a one-minute time limit and inhibiting players from efficiently getting a feel for the game. 3D Sonic seems cursed to always disappoint, despite how sick fans allegedly are of replaying Green Hill Zone over and over.

League of War: VR Arena is VR tabletop wargaming. It’s not overly tactical. You put a unit on the table and it does its own thing. I like how a person with a controller can play a person with the VR gear on. One thing’s for sure, though: I am yet to see any promotion for VR where the person wearing the VR gear did not look like a tool.

Elder Scrolls Online, AKA Why We’re Not Getting Elder Scrolls 6 Anytime Soon, continues to chug along with another expansion out on consoles: The Clockwork City. Oh wow, so they got the level designers from Arkane who did that fantastic Clockwork Mansion level in Dishonored 2 and let them make a whole CITY?! *checks earpiece* Ahh, never mind. Still, it looks pretty cool, I suppose.

Syberia 3: An Automaton with a Plan takes you back to the buggy-yet-has-a-cult-following-because-steampunk world of Syberia 3 but this time you play as a famous robot Tin Man, looking for the female lead of the main game Dorothy. Or something.

As for DLC I’d actually buy, Horizon: Zero Dawn gets a new area to explore in The Frozen Wilds. I just bought a copy of Horizon: Zero Dawn last week and after a few hours, I’m already impressed by the tribal-meets-tech world, female protagonist and combat mixed with stealth. I might even get to play it someday, if my daughter lets me have a turn. My pick for the week.

Our future President salutes you.

Man oh man, the PC games list just gets more incomprehensible every week. Soon every possible combination of glyphs in the latin alphabet will be exhausted.

Tell me about it. Last week one of the titles to come out was simply titled “Pinball.”

I defy you to verify the existence of that game, let alone differentiate it from the five million other games with the same title.

I hope the Nioh PC version is a good port. Koei Tecmo have been pretty spotty in the past.

Oy, Hand of Fate 2. I'm interested. The first game was a great concept that fell a little short of execution for me, so a sequel will likely tighten things up and deliver.

If its a good port, I can see myself double dipping. One of my favorite games of the year.

Other than that, this week is all about The Frozen Wilds.

Yay more LOGistICAL!

Space Pirates and Zombies 2 drops tomorrow as well, by the by.

Football Manager 2018. All day.

My 25th year, since I bought the first one for the Amiga back in 1992, when it was called Championship Manager, had no real player names and took about 30 minutes to set up a new game.

(My mouse is nervously looking towards the wall, where two of its brethren have met a catastrophic end...due to perceived FM related failures..)

Wooo, Nioh Complete Edition! I like the wording. PC friends are in for a treat. I thought about double-dipping until I saw the recommended requirements. Then I got a bit sadder but remembered I uninstalled from the PS4 because of inactivity. And I should probably be more responsible with my game dollars.
