Auto Assault Thoughts?
Sunday, January 16th, 2005 - 12:49pm
I just finished watching the gameplay and CGI trailer movies off of Gamespot for this upcoming MMORPG. When I was a kid I loved the game Auto Duel on the C-64. Does anyone have any info on this game or thoughts about its possible success? Anyone intrested in playing this one as well?

Welp, as it''s made by the same company who made Jumpgate, I''m in regardless.
It looks like it''ll be a twitch game with several factors being considered under the hood when it comes to combat (such as stats and what not). Apparently the environment will be totally destructable, and once things are destroyed, they remain that way. Other than that, stuff is pretty sketchy right now, but I have faith in NetDevil.
Can''t forget Havok physics engine.

Ummmm Havok, and thoughts of 3D Auto Duel. Must resist arousal.

I don''t think that''s possible.

Hideyho! I was just passing through and noticed this thread about Auto Assault, so I thought I''d pop in and say thanks for talking about us. (I''m the community coordinator.) If you haven''t checked out the official website lately, we''ve spruced it up a bit and added new screenshots. We''ve also started doing weekly Recon updates to tell more about the fiction, the races, etc.
We don''t have our boards up yet, so feel free to drop me a line - pann@ncsoft.com - if you have any questions and I''ll do my best to get you the information you''re looking for.

Anyone remember the paper and dice version from Steve Jackson? Car Wars? Great stuff.
Pann: Any idea when there may be a beta and the ""thought"" on timeframe of commercial release? I checked out the gameplay vids on gamespot and the game seems intriguing especially if it lives up to fill the gap of SJ Games'' Car Wars in gameplay.

Glad to hear that you''re excited about Auto Assault and interested to see more!
We will be putting the beta registration page up very soon, and by soon I don''t mean the traditional dev cop out ""soon™"" but we are actually finalizing the design of the page and working on the specific date. Beta will start not long after that. As soon as I can, I''ll let everyone know what the ETA is.

Was a big Car Wars fan, but I''m thinking that the way the game has been described in Gamespy lends it self to the asshat/NFSU crowd. Is it going to be all PVP, or will there be mission based objectives as well?

It''s not all PVP and unconsenual PVP is restricted to only those really far-reaching areas where it should be a little more dangerous, to be true to the story, because Humans, Mutants and Biomeks aren''t particularly fond of one another and will pretty much shoot each other on sight.
For those who like their PVP a little more structured, we''ve got the arena system. We''re still not able to say too much about it publicly yet, but think demolition derby - mano e mano or in teams.
And last but not least, missions. Yep, we''ve got them and you''ll want to do them because sometimes completing one can open up new areas of the map or score you some pretty phat loot.
Don''t knock NFSU too much. Scorch loves that game! heh

Gimme a Burnout 3 game with Twisted Metal plus your massive levels and physics and you got me.

I *loved* that game! A turn-based PC game like that would rock.

There has been some decent coverage on Gamespy and Gamespot including some nice movies on Gamespot. Looks fun so far. I am hoping there is some great out of vehicle action as well.

There''s a full page of interviews and previews links on http://www.autoassault.com/press. Reading some of those should give you a good indication of what the game will be like.
To address what SpyNavy said about out of vehicle action, while it is true that you exit your car when you enter town, towns are peaceable places where you shop and socialize. Because leaving the safety of town and exploring the wilderness is so dangerous - and such a bio-hazard - you''ll automatically be in your car when you exit the cities. Setting it up that way makes it more in-line with the premise of the game world and the backstory.

I loved that game too. I remember the old AutoDuel as well. I have hopes for this game, mitigated a bit by some healthy cautiousness. I wish NCSoft all the luck in the world, but I really hope that they launch it only ""when it is done"". This has such potential . . . .

I''m getting a 404 on that press link, but I''ll have to find out more about this one. I was a big fan of Car Wars and Autoduel back in the day. Also a fan of the game Treadmarks more recently.
All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.
Just go to auto assault.com and hit the hyperlink to Press and all the coverage is there. Links to differing game site pieces.

Woo! I got into the beta. Now that I've mentioned that, it's time for me to click that wacky NDA link.
I just got in yesterday too but was too busy with Battlefield 2.

I just got in too, but time is an issue. I'm just swamped in good games right now.

A bunch of GWJ folks are in the beta. Of course, nobody is at liberty to discuss it as the NDA is pretty strict ... from what I understand, that is. Not that I've seen it or anything.
I haven't been able to play it yet because the server's only up on Wednesdays and Fridays.

How do you get into the beta?
