I keep hearing the term "aggro" used throughout the different forums. Can someone please tell me what this means?

If someone has aggro, they have a baddie''s attention. Warriors want this. Casters don''t.

All this science I don't understand. It's just my job five days a week.

If you''re running by a creature and they come after you, you just ""aggroed"" them. If you''re fighting a monster in a group and the monster switched from attacking one guy to attacking you, you drew their aggro. In Blizzard speak, they call it ""threat"".

A common theme throughout MMORPGs is aggro management; in WoW the term ""threat"" is used and you''ll also hear people talk about mob ""hate"". A mob has a list of people that it doesn''t like, its hate list if you will. It attacks whomever is at the top of the list. Generally when working in a group, you try to manage things such that whoever is most equipped to take the hits is doing so, although in WoW it''s more of a challenge than other games.

Edit: Leaping reminded me of another use of the term. The mobs that will attack you when you get too close are referred to as aggro mobs, as opposed to the neutral ones that will only attack if provoked.

Oh yeah when the mage overnukes and the mob runs over from the tank and starts beating on him, the mage is said to have pulled aggro.

As far as I know, aggro is short/slang for aggression. More or less. If you have aggro, you''re the target of aggression. If a mob is aggro, it is aggressive and will attack you if you come near it.

here''s a stupid question... if I go and buy the game, and my system/campus firewall doesn''t let me play it, anyone willing to buy it off me? (the walmart here has more than enough copies)

It works through my corperate firewall so I doubt you will have any issues, worst case is you would have to point to a proxy server but I doubt that would be needed (I don''t need to for wow but for things like Quak3 I need to). Sony games like EQ2 just forget about them, worst network code hacks ever. Always safest to buy somwhere that allows returns, more places will be doing that soon due to a recent settlment (at least in CA).

Thanks guys! The more I learn about this addiction the more it makes sense. So I guess it would make sense then to have a Warrior be the target of everyone''s aggro.

It''s all coming together....well pieces are.

This is killing me, I can afford it, I''m just worried I won''t be able to play it if I do I know you said that it would work in most places, but the campus IT dept is run by half-wit people who, because we run a Microsoft OS (previously just windows 2k, now pretty much all windows xp) they threw in a Microsoft ISA server - however, they didn''t know what they were doing, and have only managed to screw things up (for instance, an entire month without internet of any kind due to the ignorance, druing the last month of school... no less) --- at any rate, the ISA server is poorly configured in an attempt to prevent things like kazaa and whantot, instead of disabling just kazaa, they disable everything and when they realize they block something everyone needed they open up the ports a month later.

Long story short, there''s no telling, Ragnarok online doesn''t work, but gunbound does, everquest does, but who knows what does/doesn''t.......

edit: Xbox live works as well, otherwise I""d burn down all of their houses

... with them in it

... tied to the kitchen table

... with their legs fueling the fire

Yikes. That''s ridiculous, man.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.
