The New Ridley Scott Epic
Wednesday, December 29th, 2004 - 3:28am
I was making one of my rare visits to Ain't it Cool and saw a link to the new Ridley Scott movie, Kingdom of Heaven. You can see a nice big Quicktime of it here.
Looks like Orlando Bloom may prove he can carry a movie on his pale little shoulders. Only time will tell.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium

All my female freinds watch Leo DeCaprio in his latest movies and say ''I can''t believe I found him hot once...''
I really, REALLY can not wait until that time comes for Orlando Bloom. Once it does, maybe he''ll go the DeCaprio way and take some time off to learn to act and pick some good parts.
This trailer looks alright, but far too calculated. Simply too much ''the public wants X, so we will give them X'' stuff. Medieval movies are becoming so common they''re boring, and seeing huge armies clash is becoming a cliche.

So jaded...
Looks like a fun movie to me. Guess we''ll see.

I imagine a Ridley Scott film about the Crusades would be a notch or two above the medieval film rabble. The trailer looks sweet.
Anyone notice who''s doing the music? I was interested to note that it''s not Hans Zimmer this time around, it''s Harry ""MGS"" Gregson-Williams. Nice to see him getting some juicy gigs like that...

There haven''t been too many medieval movies. They''re just now starting to be made. We don''t have to put up with more scifi drek and Star Trek movies. count your blessings!
For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. ~Ron Shelton, Bull Durham, 1988
But.. but.. I really really really like Hans Zimmer''s film scores.
Ah well. I liked the MGS music too, so I guess it''s all good
Oh yeah, the trailer''s pretty nifty and I''ll check out the movie in theaters when it hits.

Yes, I like cymbals too.
I just like hearing something from someone other than Zimmer, Williams, Elfman and, if it''s a sexy suspense movie, Angelo Badalamenti. Oh, and xylophone guy from American Beauty.

Shrek 1/2, Man on Fire, Chronicles of Narnia, Team America, Father of the Pride, The Rundown, Phonebooth, Spy Kids, Chicken Run, The Tigger movie (), Enemy of the State, Antz, Armageddon, The Replacement Killers, The Rock, Broken Arrow, and Crimson Tide aren''t juicy enough for you?
Anything that this man touches I see. He is that good in my opinion.

I knew he did the music in Enemy of the State, The Rock, and Crimson Tide, but I didn''t know about all those others.
Come to think of it though, Man On Fire did have some remarkably good music with Lisa Gerrard involved, which would make sense given that the movie was directed by Tony Scott. She has now been involved with soundtracks in both of the Scott brothers'' recent movies.

Those are all suitably juicy, but his general domain up to this point has been the summer blockbuster, not high-concept Oscar-bait with an uber ''A''-List director like Ridley Scott. I just think the guy is hell of talented and I''m happy to see him finally up there with the biggest names in the business.

It''s a Ridley Scott film, I''ll go see it. That being said:
NEVER WATCH A MOVIE BY HIS BROTHER TONY SCOTT UNLESS YOU LIKE MIGRAINE-SEIZING HEADACHES.
Thank you.
Hans Zimmer...despite the movie making a mockery of a great book, I loved the soundtrack to Black Hawk Down.
As for this, i''ll probably see it because I do trust Ridley Scott (except for the movie already mentioned). But i''m curious to see the kind of touch he''ll use to depict one of the darkest hours in the history of religion.

I really doubt that Orlando is able to carry the movie by himself. It''ll be for the pretty violence I go if I catch this one in the theatres.
Also, the shot of the woman and the kid looked like a carbon copy of the happy-home flashbacks in Gladiator.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
He directed Enemy of the State, which I thought was a very good movie.

As they would be... I hate to say it, but I''d imagine just about any soldier in any era with wife and child at home are probably thinking the same thing when they go into combat... it may seem cliched for Mr. Scott... but I imagine it''s only cliche because it''s true.

Aye, but I imagine that there is more than one way to film such a thing.

In that era though? I mean, every war movie has it... in modern combat, it''s usually photo''s of some kind... go back to ancient and if it isn''t the family at home thoughts, then it''s the family figure that Maximus brought along... I''ll state again, it may be cliched, but that''s because it IS cliche... and I don''t really see any way to do it without feeling cliched.... *shrugs*

Bloom? That waif!
Surely we need the likes of Sean Bean or Ray Winston to project a real brutal gravitas, not some clean limbed delicate nancy boy who looks like a male model luvvie!
So much for casting, I hope Scott doesn''t make this into a piece of P.C. schmaltz and into a serious historical epic. The Crusades were a period of more then just 19th Century Romance or 20th Century ""Right On"" dross.
It was a period of two cultures coming together, head first. With all the pent up aggression of 300 years of mutual ignorence and militant zeal.
A great deal of bad and good came from these events and I couldn''t stand 2 hours of simplistic self destructive biased moralising.
A warning please, but not a whitewash.
Does anyone know which Crusade it is based around? I suspect the 3rd, it seems to get the most Hollywood attention due to the celebrity presence. Richard I v Saladin... the movie!
"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." - Churchill
Looks to me like it focuses on the periods leading up to the 3rd crusade... the character''s name is of ""ibelin"" which is a town outside of Jerusalem, so I assume Bloom''s character was raised in the Levant. Probably mid 13th just before Richard and Saladin come into play... maybe when Baldwin IV was losing control, I daresay we''ll see the assassins kill Conrad of Montferrat. This is the area I''m concentrating on in my master''s program so I am not sure if I''ll enjoy this movie as much, depends on how it turns out... I''ll probably see it anyway though

Interesting take Lester, looks like you know your stuff.
It would be interesting to see a reconstruction of the Crusader Kingdoms, in particular the Kingdom of Jerusalem itself.
Though I doubt Hollywood would be able to resist having Richard''s amphibious landing at Jaffa or the death of Fredrick Barbarossa on the way to Crusade. As you say, they certainly won''t be able to resist the Ishmaeliean cult playing both sides against each other.
The mutual respect which grew between Richard and Saladin climaxing in their negotiations at the end of the 3rd would make a classic ending I think though. Especially in these times, which I''m sure is why this movie is being made in the first place.
