The GWJFL 2005 interest thread.

I know this is long but if you are interested in signing up, please read it all.

Well it looks like the holiday season was definitely not the right time to start a new league and GWJFL3 appears to be DOA. At least it gave the veterans a chance to try out the new settings and decide if they like them or not as well as give some rookies a chance to figure out if this game was for them.

While I'm not yet interring GWJFL3, I wanted to go ahead and figure out how many people are interested in the next iteration. So let's make a couple things clear.

(Edited to move this up so I can get it out there early.) I hope that I don't come off as a hard-ass and anyone who's played with me or participated in GWJFL3 will hopefully tell you that I'm not really as grumpy as my avatar might indicate. I am only trying to be thorough in setting your expectations so as to ensure the success of what will likely be the final iteration of the GWJFL as played on/with ESPN NFL 2k5. Remember that your participation affects your fellow GWJ'ers in the league. We like you, we really like you, but please read the #1 below twice.

1) We don't care how good you are just that you are dedicated to playing your games. This means that we expect you to be proactive in trying to get your games set up. Whether it be checking the weekly thread, sending PMs, or whatever it takes to make a "good faith" effort, when the new schedule goes up, people should coordinate their schedules earlier, not later. (Yes, we understand that things come up and that's not a problem... but even SpyNavy and his odd schedule manages to get his games in.)

2) You have to use voice communication. As Reaper so succinctly put it, "I like being able to either see the person or chat with them as they're wiping the floor with me. Otherwise, I feel as though I'm simply being annihilated by an ultrapowerful game AI." No one is asking you to recite Shakespeare during the game but there are many reasons (that have already been discussed at length and so I won't go into them here) why voice is a good thing.

3) The length of the season will equal the number of teams so that everyone gets to play everyone else at least once. Since the maximum number of weeks is 16, this means that the maximum number of teams will also be 16. I would be willing to have more weeks than teams if 100% of the players wanted it but not less.

4) If it is necessary to truncate players out of the league, it will be based purely on a first-come, first-serve basis. The game only supports certain multiples of players. I don't know all of them but, for example, you can have 16 or 20 players but nothing in between. As such, if, for example, we have 13 interested parties and can therefore only support a 12-team league, then the last one to post in this thread will miss out. I'm sorry but it's the only fair way to do it. Exception: If someone wants to abdicate their slot in favor of another who would not "make the cut", they are free to do so.

5) Except for a) number of weeks, b) AI, and c) Player EQ, all settings will be the same as they were in GWJFL3 (which should be the same as they were in GWJFL1). The number of playoff teams will be as close as possible to half the total number of teams, rounded up.

So here's what we need from you. If I haven't run you off yet, please post your top 3 choices of teams, and your preferences for the AI and Player EQ settings in the following format:

1) Team 1
2) Team 2
3) Team 3
4) AI (All Pro or Legendary?)
5) EQ (On or Off)

If you want to change your choices, please edit your original post. If someone further down the thread makes you change your opinion on one of the settings or you decide you don't really want the New Orleans Saints as your first choice, please edit your post. Feel free to add new posts that contain commentary but please only post your 5 choices once.

Which leads us to: 6) This method of picking teams seemed to work fairly well in GWJFL1 since it allowed people to see in advance what everyone else was picking and, in certain cases, allow players to abdicate a team because they saw that someone else really wanted it more. I will try to give every one their first choice but in the case of two people who both have the same first choice, the team will go to the player who is higher up in the draft order as determined by the NFL-draft-rules-based method used at the beginning of GWJFL3 using the GWJFL1 final results (new/expansion players will again be placed in the middle of the pack in first-come, first-serve order of posting in this thread).

Finally, I want to extend a personal invitation to everyone who has participated thus far. I know some of you may be feeling a little burned by the last couple leagues but please give us one more chance. Hopefully, you can see that we're taking steps to try to ensure a high level of fun and a minimum of frustration in GWJFL 2005.

Thank you.

P.S. So as to make sure that we are completely out of the holiday season and hence don't run into conflicts on opening weekend, the target start date is Wednesday, January 5, 2005.

OK, I want in, shocker. My team choices are:

Redskins
Denver
Atlanta
AI: I want Legendary so that I can tackle RB''s with fewer than 4 defenders and so I can get some blocking on kickoffs.
EQ: I''m going to have to say off. It seems like a good idea but seeing it in practice I''m not a big fan.

Thanks so much, Grumpy, for taking the time to do this. If I can be of help, don''t hesitate to ask me.

I''d like to recommend you make it policy that both parties are required to PM each other the moment they see the new week has rolled forward. If only to lay out some days and times that would work for them. I think sometimes it''s a matter of both guys waiting for the other to make the first move. I got the ball rolling for scheduling on 90% of my games, sometimes days after the announcement that the new week had started was made.

Finally, my chance. I have an XBox now! (gasp)

I''ll pick...

Lions
Bears
Colts

(you can tell I''m not going based on skill.)

As for the other 2, I have no idea what the difference is (read on) so whatever is decided is good for me.

EDIT: Don''t have ESPN NFL2K5 yet, but I''ve played it multiple times, and I should be good to go. I''ll buy it this weekend (actually, I have a day off Thursday) so I''ll be able to refresh myself and get prepared.

Other than that, sign me up.

ESPN NFL 2k5. I highly recommend you play it a bit to make sure you''ll like it before the drop dead date, Warlock.

Fine, I can''t say no to Swampy when he makes those puppy dog eyes at me. I will say right now though that the voice thing isn''t a suggestion, it''s a rule. If I''m playing someone who refuses to use it, I''ll hand them them the win rather than muddle through a game. All you need to do is say ""Hey, how''s it going?"" and have the ability to tell me why you''re pausing the game for four minutes or grunt when I say something amusing and/or lame. If you''re worried about kids, use the mute button. Being able to hear the other guy is just as important as being able to talk.

Patriots
Colts
Eagles

1) Legendary (I seem to get actual special teams blocking with this)
2) EQ off (make this process a bit easier)

2) Jacksonville
3) Jacksonville

OK fine, alternate choices:
2) Baltimore
3) Philadelphia

Now just give me my Jags and I won''t have to have a stacked team.

You didn''t have a ""dropsies"" game. I didn''t until my last game with Bagga. When that hits, you cannot pass the ball - period. For the whole game, you can just give up on passing. I thought everyone was exaggerating until I finally had one game like that myself.

It''s broken. It''s not every game, but when it hits you, it''s pointless to keep trying. It makes you long for running QBs to be your biggest problem.

Heheh. I can get away with it because at no time since I''ve started playing here has anyone made any sort of claim on the Jags other than me. Nobody else seems to be a Jags fan, and since they''re not highly rated in the game, nobody''s going after them for that reason either.

I been playing with the Steelers since NFL Fever 2003 when I was beta testing Xbox Live. And now that they actually have a good team, people (who shall remain nameless but their initials are ... JohnnyMojo) want to step up and take them from me.

The Steelers are a hot team around here - I tried the last 2 Leagues to get them. My beloved teams are the Dolphins, the Steelers, the Panthers, the Colts, the Bucs, and then the Jags. The Dolphins are abysmal and I have to be a closet fan, but they beat the Patties so they won their Superbowl this year . Johnny will get to rain destruction with Big Ben and the Bus - it will be interesting .

Heh. Well, the Steelers used to be a tough rival for the Jags when they were both in the AFC Central. Pittsburgh was always respectful in all the ways Tennessee wasn''t. Cowher treated the Jags like honored and worthy opponents. If the Jags don''t make it into the playoffs (or get eliminated early), I''m cheering for Pittsburgh to go the rest of the way.

Like the last time around, JMJ will be ""picking"" third-to-last, meaning he''ll have to give up any team picked by anyone other than Optimistic or myself (which is why I haven''t even bothered making a claim yet). Based on the comments next to his picks, I think that he already knows this so this is just to make sure it is clear to the rest of you. That being said, I beg you guys to let him have Denver or we''ll never hear the end of it.

For the record, the current priority order (I almost called it draft order but that''s not exactly accurate) is as follows:
1) SwampYankee
2) Highlander

4) Loganrapp
5) Warlock
6) Baggachipz

One more thing. We already have 10 sign-ups (yea!). In case it''s not obvious, that means there are only 6 more slots left. Get ''em while they''re hot (if you''re going to be dedicated; can I hammer that home enough? ).

Edit: I''m loathe to double-post so I''ll also mention here what I said on the GWJFL3 Week4 thread: I plan on keeping both leagues running in parallel even if I''m the only one in the league who ever even tries to complete their scheduled game... So please feel free to consider that the ""casual"" league (casual meaning you might get a game or you might not) and if you actually play 2k5 because you like to play 2k5, don''t abandon it. BUT if you only have time for one league, feel free to drop from that one so that 1) I can try to find a replacement owner or 2) at least your opponent will know he doesn''t have to try to set up a game that week.

Edit: Yes, I edit a lot.

I agree play to win as long as you dont play with exploits and known issues. I have seen people move say the left DT or rt DT all the way over to the opposite side and various other line combos that take advantage of the AI etc... Also taking 10-15 mins (extreme) to adjust your players, plays, formations etc... takes away from the enjoyment of your opponent etc... Play to win, but play to have fun as well.
