Poor poor psp.....
IGN just published a useful review of the PSP's most contreversial "feature" battery life - very thorough test for anyone interested
http://psp.ign.com/articles/574/574557p2.html?fromint=1
for those of you too lazy to read it all here are the hard facts
"Gaming Test" (Ridge Racer, full brightness, full speaker sound but no wifi or UMD) = 3H32mins
"UMD Test" (non-3d graphics, full brighness, full headphone sound, no wifi, heavy UMD access) = 5h9mins
"Sleep Test" (everything off but PSP in standby mode) = negligible drain after 24h
"Multiplayer Test" (ridge racer, full brighness, full speaker sound, low umd access, wifi on & only connected to 1 other PSP) = 2h46mins
"MP3 test" (screen off, speaker sound full, streaming off memory stick) = 10h39
so, pretty poor battery life, i think as everyone expected. shame really - lets hope sony release a v1.1 of the psp or a new battery pack or something. until then, i wont be buying one

What is the battery life on the GB?
Unfortunately, if I slash my wrist with my lightsaber it cauterizes instantly. - PurEvil on emo Star Wars plots.
On de SP? About 10 hours or so... I hear the Nintendo DS is also about 10 hours.
The man wears a bucket of KFC on his head. I wouldn't expect anything less. - Pred
Actually that is better than I thought it would be, at least it sounds like you can watch Braveheart without plugging in.
My SP seemed a LOT longer than 10 hours.
So you mean to tell me you can not shut this thing down? You have to put it in sleep like the PS2 so it drains the battery even more?
XBox Live|Tshirts|My Music|GameFly|xfire
you can shut it down - but the sleep option is there also
I think it''s almost silly to have a sleep button. If I''m not using it, you can be damn sure it''s being turned off. Especially if it only has ~180 minutes of power to begin with.
"Thanks, KrazyTaco, thanks. I'd put it in your pooper too." -Mex
"Krazy, I love the fact that you exist." -Vector
"Oh, KrazyTaco, you fulfill all my wishes." -pneuman
xboxlive= KrazyTacoFO
But you''re missing the real point of the sleep feature.
Sleep = battery hot-swap.
That feature alone eases a lot of my PSP battery life concerns.

My GBA lasts for hours and days and years. I swear there''s a little tiny nuclear reactor in there. It''s crazy.
I plan on getting a DS eventually, but I''m waiting for a really good game. I wish someone would make a sci-fi Diablo clone for the DS. Up to 16 players at once? Sweet.

Any news on the heartiness (is that a real word?) of the optical drive on the PSP? I think that was the other major concern.

I would buy a DS if something like that came out and it was good. And I''ve yet to ever bother with a portable gaming apparatus of any kind.

As a guy who spends about an hour each day of commuting, I can say I like the portable gaming. It sure beats staring at the smelly person next to you, or getting stuck in a conversation with that annoying person who just won''t shut up about his personal life. I can honestly say I don''t care to talk to strangers much. (especially before my morning coffee!)
Even though I love the DS, Mario and FTM are wearing a bit thin. It was a weak launch, and the good stuff won''t show up until mid-late 2005.
I used to be more negative with the PSP, but I''ve loosened up a bit. It really is a great gadget that Sony is losing uber-bucks on in order to dive into the handheld market. After a bit of thought I decided to pick one up on launch day, I''ll be preordering in January. I am one of the 10 people who still don''t own an MP3 player, so that alone is warranting a purchase for me.
I have a love for cool little gadgets, so both the DS and PSP to me are neat little devices with an amazing amount of technology thrown in them.
Like Atom says, I can''t wait for the day we see 16 player online RTS/Diablo-Esque action on the DS - or at the bare minimum a GoldenEye port with wireless connectivity. The potential is awesome with the DS

I agree, that is a good bit better than I had anticipated. Even considering battery life, when you compare the DS with the PSP, there really is no comparison. PSP simply crushed the DS hands down.
Yankees rock, you know it's true...
What do you mean? Based on graphics and games? I think the UMD movie thing is a joke. I am not going to buy the same movie twice so unless Blockbuster or Netflix rent them, I ain''t buying.
Game wise, both systems are going to have a weak launch. I got a DS for Christmas with Mario, Sprung (being returned) and FTM. Mario is still the best platformer of all time. With Animal Crossing and Advance Wars coming early 2005, it will get a lot of play time out of it.
Animal Crossing with online play = GAWD!

I agree with Ulairi, the DS is an awesome machine - whenever I show people everyone crowds around and they want to play. The PSP simply allows you to play almost-PS2 games you already have on the road, the DS changes the way you play with creativity (which hasn''t been fully realized yet for the launch).
XBL/Swat R2 SPORE/Swatr2 WAR/Nephlokan
I was skeptical on the whole PSP thing too based on the battery life concerns. I have a friend who just came back from Japan and said the PSP was the best thing since sliced bagels.
Anywhere I can go to see a comparison of the two? More info etc.?

well, I finally got to try one of these things today, and if the battery life is an issue, who cares?
did a race on Ridge Racers, and watched one of those Vampire fight games, this thing is awesome. the speed of Ridge Racers, and the build-up of the Nitro to go even faster is amazing, the music is still cheese, and the graphics on that screen are intense.
the DS is not in trouble most likely due to price point, but I cannot wait to get my hands on one of those things!
MaxShrek .. looks like Jake.. drives like Elwood.
Price point isn''t going to be THAT much of a factor, I don''t think... the PSP launched for around 20,000 yen, so expect the US system to debut at $199.99. I think the under $200 point will make it very atractive.
I am an early adopter by nature, but a late adopter by wallet and other factors. Looking at the DS... Eh. Who wants to use the touch screen to control a game, while having to support the system with the other hand? I''m supposed to use a stylus? Or that thumb nub thing? It just seems so awkward. I agree that the DS is doing ""new things"" with gameplay, but the launch games seem pretty terrible and I won''t consider one until the library improves. God, please staunch the flow of bad N64 ports.
I''m not saying the PSP''s initial line up is any better... just based on the device and the capabilities and the cool factor, I am pretty sure the PSP is going to be my first choice.

Using the DS with the touch screen and stylus is very easy. I thought it would be hard to support the system and since I''m lefthanded, I thought some games would be hard to play. Metroid Prime Hunters has control set up for lefties and folks of less coolness. Pikochat is bloody awesome. If I was in high school or JR. high, I would have loved to own something like this. A great way to pass time during english.
The DS has more options for people and with people getting Linux up and runnig on it. It could turn into a PDA that plays ""real"" games.
Which brings me back to the PSP. There still is no reason for me to own the console. All it does is play games with PS2 ""quality"" graphics. If a game is ported to the PSP, I''ll most likely get it for the PS2. I won''t watch movies on it. I have a portable DVD player that plays standard DVDs. I won''t use it for an MP3 player, I have a RIO and an IPOD. The only thing it has going for it is analog control.
For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. ~Ron Shelton, Bull Durham, 1988
yeah, well, I''m a 33 year old man. I teach English. I have no use for pictochat or any other game where I am able to connect with ""up to 16 players""... when on earth will I ever be in a situation to play with 15 other people who own a DS?
I guess we just have different expectations/priorities with a handheld game system.
I guess... if thats something you''re looking for. I already have a pocketpc which can run emulators for most older game systems... so this holds no interest for me.
having a handheld with ""only PS2 quality graphics""!? ONLY? Thats a pretty amazing thing in and of itself.
Like you, I have no interest in playing movies on the PSP or using it to play music (since I already have my own MP3 hard drive player). I also don''t need it for a PDA... ""just"" being a game machine that plays high quality games is enough for me. And besides, I''d rather have a game system with PS2 quality graphics than one with N64 quality graphics
Look, I love Nintendo... have all the systems theyve made... up to and including a GBA SP and a Gamecube. I love their games. I might consider buying a DS at some point but right now, if I had to make a choice, it definitely comes in as #2 for me.

It''s awesome if you have kids. I am a 28 year old man and I picked one up for myself and my son. We''ve had lots of fun, especially when family is over, holidays etc. It''s amazing to see the smiles on people''s faces when they are Pictochatting
Also had some nice games of Mario multiplayer and MP:H - again, everyone had a blast.
If you don''t have kids or know anyone with a DS, I can see this being a moot point however.
The PSP''s graphics will look ancient when the next-gen hits, so even though the initial ""ooh"" will get you, it won''t be sustainable forever
XBL/Swat R2 SPORE/Swatr2 WAR/Nephlokan
However, if you are going to play the very same games that you can on a regular console, why bother? Need for Speed on the PSP isn''t going to ""wow"" me like Animal Crossing with online play or StarCraft DS. I can spend the same ammount on a PS2 game and play it on my highdef, flatscreen TV with my ss stereo system.

Exactly Ulairi.. if I want the console experience you can bet I''ll be doing it on my 120"" Projector and Surround Sound instead of a handheld. No matter how hard I try I can''t do things with my home setup that I can on the DS - it''s a fresh experience.
I will be getting a PSP - it''s an amazing little gadget that is worth much more than it''s retail price. I just don''t see anything worth owning that I couldn''t play at home on a PS2.
However, I would much rather play Ridge Racer on the PSP than on the DS - there''s no comparison. They will both excel at different genres. But it''s a shame there are so many things the PSP can''t do that the DS can - and those are the things I am looking for.
In early-mid 2005 the PSP will be used for ""bragging rights"". After the light show and fireworks are over however, there had better be some damn creative original games that satiate my needs on the road, or it will get more use as an MP3/All-Purpose-Media-Player.
XBL/Swat R2 SPORE/Swatr2 WAR/Nephlokan
I plan to pick one of these up myself - Battery life notwithstanding... I would like to see more of their opening line up, but the initial games look pretty phenomenal for a handheld. I am very hopeful that the new ""movie disc"" will be supported by more then Sony, but I doubt it. Given the large stable of PS2 games I expect to see most of those games converted to PSP - I would gladly pick it up just to play Madden or NCAA, Everquest Adventures or any number of excellent RPG titles. This is given my understanding that essentially the PSP should be able to play most PS2 titles if they are converted - that the PSP packs that kind of horsepower?

The problem with the PSP for RPG titles is the battery life. I play RPG for long sittings and if the battery dies, I''ll be pissed off. I think it will work well for sports and driving games.
I just think the PSP is going to fall to the empire that is Nintendo handhelds. More powerful systems have come and fallen before.
The movie playback is useless unless I can rent them and it is supported by every major studio.

If the battery lasts for 3-4 hrs and allows me to hot swap an extra - that definitely suits my needs.

I don''t like the idea of having to bring an extra battery with me if I ever want to game. I wish they could have gotten the battery life to be 6-10 hours. That would have rocked the house.
