EggNog

So I was going to make some eggnog this weekend. In the past I have always bought wal-mart eggnog (non-alcoholic), so I have never had real eggnog. I was wondering if anyone has a recipe they swear by, or I should just use a recipe like this: http://256.com/gray/recipes/eggnog/

That''s EXACTLY the recipe I used last year, and it turned out SMASHINGLY (yes, I meant that in two ways...) Everyone enjoyed it, and I''ll be making it again.
Warning: the guy is completely right. You will get sh*t faced, and it doesn''t keep well. So, plan on drinking it all. My own personal recommendation would be to try your best to keep the mixture just that - a mixture... mine tended to get a bit separated as the night went by. But, that''s nothing that a little stir didn''t fix, and it didn''t affect the taste at all.

Is there any specific brand whiskey and light rum that go good with it? Or is basically any we pick will be fine?

Eggnog? Well, eggs have lots of protein, so eggnog has got to be some kind of protein drink, right? I''ll try to find some, drink it after going to the gym... Maybe even a couple of hours before exercise, that''d be good too....

One time in college my friends and I got really drunk and did that. Played raquetball and man, did we have some bad hand eye coordination.

That recipe looks frigging awesome, and as I love Eggnog, I''ll be trying this out.
We used Kessler''s for the Whiskey, since you basically need a handle for the recipe. I can''t remember the rum we used... I would go middle of the road - Not Heaven''s Hill, but not Pusser''s in a decanter.
You won''t really care or, I expect, taste the difference. But your head might thank you in the morning if you don''t go ALL the way cheap.

Maybe I''m just lazy, but I''ve always found that Wal Mart Eggnog + Rebel Yell = yummy holiday goodness!

I never knew egg nog was sweet and I was disapointed when I found that out (just recently). I hate it.

Ever try playing hockey drunk? Our goalies only thought was ""why the f**k are there balls flying at me"" and then it hit him

(shudder) The problem is that any rational person would have to get mighty drunk BEFORE touching eggnog.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I''ve always liked the dairy brands of eggnog. Dunno if works the same in the States, but up here in the frozen North, all the diary producers have their own eggnog that mixes extremely well with alcohol of all sorts. Quick and easy, and tastes good. I would recommend Goldschlager with nog - adds a little kick that''s mighty fine.

Too bad I''m the designated designated driver (yes I know I put designated twice, that''s because I''m always the DD, so I like to refer to myself as the DDD). At least there''s virgin eggnog to pass the time. Yummy, I think I''ll go buy some right now.

Stay with middle of the road whiskey and rum.

You won''t be praying homage to the porcelain god the next morning if you do this. Well unless you drink the entire thing yourself or start drinking beer in addition to the ''Nog.

Who knows; if the night is young and the nog is gone.

I don''t know about the Captain... if you''re talking the unspiced variety, then sure... but otherwise, I would suggest letting actual spices do the spicing, and not the alcohol itself.
I bought the eggs THAT DAY, to be sure they were completely fresh, and had about 14 people drinking the nog. We were all a little bit wary, because seriously, RAW EGGS, but it tasted great and no one had any problems at all. I wouldn''t worry about it.

Fresh raw eggs are harmless to anyone who doesn''t have a compromised immune system. Just to be certain, don''t feed the nog to the very young or the very old.
Supermarket nog is much thicker than homemade nog, and has a rather different flavor. Supermarket nog has lots of artificial thickeners.
A fresh whole nutmeg and a nutmeg grater (a wood or metal file will work as well) will greatly enhance the flavor of the eggnog.
I made that exact eggnog for a work christmas party last weekend. I ended up using Captain Morgan''s spiced rum and Black Velvet whiskey and it turned out pretty good. If I were going to make it again I might replace a cup of whiskey with milk as it is very strong.

That''s a really good recipe, I too have used it for parties. I stick to one booze though...Rum seems to be the most popular, although I like it with a bit of Maker''s Mark.
To be honest though, unless I''m really trying to impress someone, I generally buy eggnog from a dairy like Promised Land, or one of the other really good, non-hormonal cow joints. The nog is easily as good, and then all you have to do is add booze.

I just came home with a bottle of Wild Turkey and dark rum. Can''t wait to try it at our Christmas dinner on Monday!

My mistake, I should have been more precise in my wording. Yes, please use the Captain Morgan Silver Rum, as the spiced rum will try to operpower your eggnoggy goodness.

So Pyro and myself made quite a bit of this stuff. I don''t know. Maybe we were expecting it to taste as good as the wal-mart stuff. Needless to say we each drank one glass then threw the rest in the backyard (14 servings or something like that). We then went on to drink good ol whiskey sours and Rum and Cokes.
