Serenity

A small clip:
Still, in many ways the film is already a great antidote for those of us so terrifically bored by the "Star Wars" prequels. The lion's share of my own disappointment with "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" can be traced to an absence of players as compelling and likeable as Han and Leia."Serenity," by contrast, returns to "Firefly" fans better than half a dozen Solo-caliber characters, including loutish Jayne, heartsick Kaylee, conflicted Mal, disdainful Inara, heroic Simon and damaged River. In addition, the evil Alliance has dispatched a great new villain, a ruthless and amusingly philosophical self-proclaimed "monster" essayed by Brit Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The new film is smart, romantic, moving, fast-paced, action-packed and, most crucially, one of the funniest films you'll see next year. It's certain to be a must-see for every "Firefly" fan, as it answers every question devotees may have harbored with regard to two important elements of the series: The Reavers and River Tam. (It also offers a bit of resolution with regard to two key shipboard romances.)

I also remember people from that site calling The Matrix : Revolutions to be the ""meat and potatoes"" of the series, and Star Wars: Episode II being a dramatic masterpiece of some sort.
I take their comments with a big grain of ... sand... which is rough and it gets everywhere... not like Amidala... she''s soft and smooth...
F-CK YEAH! I am so damned happy to read this, it just makes me want to see the movie all the more, as well as have a FF party really soon, in order to get friends who''ve not seen it on board with just how awesome the show, cast, and so on is.
Sad that that''s the bit of info that piqued my interest the most... but yes. Much needs to be resolved in the Kaylee/Simon and Mal/Inara areas. Of course, my judgement is swayed by the fact that those two actresses are BLINDINGLY gorgeous, and so come on, what would any TV character do in that situation? They''d make things work, that''s what.
Of course, we''ll have to wait until what, September, to see any of this? I might do something crazy and, say, see it every night during the week it comes out. Gotta let my money do the talking.

Yup, the date WAS April 22nd, but now it''s September 20th. Hopefully that''ll give ''Versal more time to promote and market the film.
Thanks for the heads up! I''d heard about the article but not tracked it down yet.
Man, reading some of the comments below the AICN article makes me realize how lucky we have it here at GWJ. Some people who post on the internet have serious problems.

Very carefully skirting the summerblockbuster period. I''m hoping that it will help tickets sales not hurt. My understanding is that there are more movies in the works pending the success of Serenity.

The more I think about the move to September, the more I think it means Universal is putting a lot of faith in this movie. I think the original April date was a move to toss something, anything into the path of Star Wars Episode 3 and soak up some sci-fi ticket sales, despite the fact that Serenity would have been overwhelmingly eclipsed. The move, to me, suggests that Universal sees this as a picture that can stand alone, but is above the occasional mindlessness of the summer blockbuster crowd. I think they''re counting on not just the existing Firefly fans - who''d have come out no matter what - but also a strong word of mouth showing and are anticipating strong reviews. So, with that in mind, they''re putting it in a slot where it can shine ... which as we know is a position Firefly never had the opportunity to exploit.
I''m genuinely beginning to think Universal sees this as a possible franchise, something the studio is notably lacking.

That''s where my mind is headed as well. Firefly has always struck me as the antidote to ""Star Trek"" and the mindless drubbing of a decent idea that its rights-holders have subjected the world to. If the suits at Universal are hip enough to see that as well, then the Sept. placement makes a lot of sense.
In the same way that Half-Life was the FPS that I''d always wanted to play, Firefly is the SF TV show I''d always wanted to see. Hopefully the movie version(s) continue(s) the trend and has a long (and ""Ep. IV: The Voyage Home""-less) life.

I dunno, man. After the episode with the cows, I could see Mal and the crew going back in time to save some Dolphins.

It would be kinda cool if they brought back the series if the movie does well.

Well, you all got me hooked on Firefly, and my wife and I have since gotten many others hooked. So I''ll try to trust that the move to Sept is a good thing. Rather than a, "")@(#_@#($ I WANT MORE FIRELY NOW!! WAAAAAAA!"" thing.
The latter being more tempting. Sigh.
Welcome to the Browncoat club, Roo.
Firefly has become my all-time favorite tv show evar.
I don''t think we can rightly make that claim. Or, rather, *I''m* not willing to based on so few episodes. There were 14-or-so-episode runs on Buffy (leading up to Graduation) and Angel (leading up to the end of Season 3, with Wes kidnapping Connor, etc) that were equally as good, as well as in other non-Joss series (ER during the Clooney/Anthony Edwards years, 24 season 1), so without multiple more years, I would hesitate to say that Firefly is my favorite TV show ever.
That isn''t to say that Firefly isn''t an INCREDIBLE show, and that it doesn''t make my top 3 or 5 shows evar, but I just hesitate to put it at the top of my list without a couple more years of character developments, the inevitable flashback episode, the spunky new girl, the adorably cute twins playing the same part, and so on. Oh, and lesbians. We know Joss likes his lesbians.

2 things:
First, has everyone seen the expanded gag reel? I found this last night and it''s hilarious and way longer than the one on the dvd. You can find a link to the gag reel HERE.There are episodes linked there too but, really if you haven''t already, just get the DVDs. They are worth their weight in gold.
Second. I am in serious Firefly withdrawal. I have seen Buffy maybe twice and thought it was, well I''m sorry I thought it was retarded. So much so that I had serious reservations about Firefly as a consequence. I''ve never seen Angel. So, having seen Firefly and being in awe of the writing on that show, were I to give Angel or (shudder) Buffy a chance would I like them now? Would I really, even though I loathed Buffy when I first saw it? (I had prejudged the show pretty harshly before ever seeing it and only half watched what was on, but still, the bad taste remains.)
Can anyone offer some insight into point 2? Does everybody here who loves Firefly also like Buffy/Angel?

I think Joss is a really great writer, and anything he puts his name on is at least worth a try.
If you''re not digging the Buffy/Angel (I do know people who like Angel but not Buffy, but they are few and far between) might I recommend Astonishing X-Men? Don''t know if you''re into comics at all, but it''s really well done, and breathes a whole lotta life into a pretty tired series.
I''d say give Buffy a try. The first season''s pretty campy and monster-of-the-week, but short. It really starts to pick up in the second/third/fourth seasons. As for Angel, I wouldn''t watch it without at least seeing SOME Buffy.

The thing about Firefly is that it was so very much Whedon''s brainchild that he wrote or had a strong hand in the writing of virtually every episode. Where with Buffy, and moreso Angel, he only wrote three or four episodes per season. Of the best episodes of either show, I''d say 90% of those were the ones written by Whedon himself. It''s similar to the X-files in that show''s heydays. There was a distinct difference between the shows written by Chris Carter, and the bulk of the shows that were not.
The first season of Buffy is, flat, terrible. The show picks up halfway through season two, and if you''re not hooked by the episode Innocense, then you should pack it away and forget. There are a few episodes of Buffy that are phenomenal and in some places groundbreaking. Find a copy of Hush (from season four) and even if you don''t know precisely what''s going on with the cast member, watch for the best of what Buffy can be. Once More With Feeling is also an amazing episode, but one that really demands that you be familiar with the mythology of the show.
The cast of Buffy really gels into season two, particularly when Spike and Oz (Seth Green) become regular cast members. The show is campy, and every season has one or two episodes that are just terrible (as with every show), but it is stronger than it may seem from one or two viewing, particularly first season shows.

What makes me cry with laughter EVERY damned time is the scene where the camera rotates around the casket of Mal and Zoe''s war buddy in The Message (I forget his name at the moment). When Nathan whips around to every group of characters, making them crack up, it makes me crack up. I love that reel.
That is absolutely hilarious. I had a friend who watched the series and loved the reel too.

There''s an expanded gag reel? Please, do tell. I haven''t found any hidden stuff on the Firefly DVDs.
