Druidpeak's road to becoming a Ranger.
The beginning of the end? Quite possibly. As December proceeds forth, christmas draws nearer and nearer, and for me so does the excitement which comes with the holiday. Sometime late next week we'll load up the car and head back home to spend christmas with the family. I'm fortunate in that my inlaws live in the same town as my parents, and it's only a 4 minute 35 second drive apart(Making the trip an infinite amount of times as a high schooler, I have it pretty well timed out now). So traveling for the holidays is quite easy. Going home does mean, NO GAMES. Which is fine and dandy, too many fun things to do to worry about it. After the holidays we'll head back to Bozeman, where my little gaming sanctuary resides. Nope, no games for me. I'm loading up my car and driving to Arizona for a Semester.
I've been reasoning with myself lately, trying to convince myself that it would ok to bring my computer along. I'll have to write papers, and I'll need a computer for that, right? What about my digital camera, where am I going to dump the pictures? Then I just have to look at my recently failed attempts at an engineering degree, and the direct correlation of too many distractions. No computer, final answer. Campus computers will let me keep up with the communities I frequent.
I had also considered bringing along the xbox or GC. It would be a perfect time to finally finish KoToR and Fable. What with no internet and all. Fortunately, my better judgement has shot down that idea.
So, as it stands. I'll be in classes until mid April. Then I'll return to Montana, where we'll pack up all our stuff and be moving to either Chicago or Portland. Hopefully I'll land a seasonal park ranger job for the summer. If my wishes come true, it will be a backcountry one. Patrol cabins are nice, but they don't have power, much less internet. Maybe I can get a couple of DS's and train the mice to play
. Winters are still up in the air, so maybe I can get back into it then. For now I'll just have to fall back on another of my favorite indoor hobbies, building scale models.
I played my career cards this fall, and it looks like I'm heading into the woods and away from the city. So here's to the next blissful week of online gaming, it's been a hoot playing with you guys. ![]()

Thats sounds perfect Druidpeak.
I''ll hazard a guess that going cold turkey is going to drive you to distraction, or at least drive you into finding some kind of distraction.
With such an idyllic job, I''m sure there is no way you can possibly get bored. Have a great time and don''t be a stranger, we expect piccies somewhere down the line!

That, sir, is a most respectable substitute for gaming! Might I inquire as to your particular flavour of poison? (Aircraft? Vehicles? etc)
As long as you don''t disappear from GWJ altogether, everything should be fine. The games will always be there.
Good luck!

Geez, I always get sadened by events like this one. Don''t get me wrong, what matters most is that you are happy Druid, but, my reflex in situations like these is always to try to persuade that it doesn''t have to be that drastic, that there is always a way... Just my thing, I guess.
What can I say, enjoy your life. Maybe we will eventualy get onto the same piece of virtual ground after all, you never know.

These are my works in progress. The sherman itself is near complete, I just have to bear down and start working on the diorama for it. And the U.S. Coast Guard Dauphin is about 2 work hours away from completion. It''s a christmas gift for my sister who was a Coastie. I''d thought about making a diorama with santa waving his arms, his sleigh augered into a snow bank next to him, and the helo is just about to land and rescue him.

Congratulations and good luck in your endeavours. Too bad you are leaving, I was looking to get my butt handed to me in JO in a month or two.

If there was a nice backbone, a super-fast PC, all the consoles and handhelds, and an HDTV, as well as all those games I never got to finish... wow.

Diorama? [/swoon]
Difficult to spot the detail of course, but from what I can see it looks real good, Druid! Any ideas yet for the diorama? (Don''t forget to add barbed wire though. I don''t think I''ve ever seen a WW2 diorama without some.

It will be sad to see you go. I remember those lonely nights when we would play games together and you would tell me stories of crazy happenings during your day at work. I''m sure when you return to GWJ you will have many more.

I think thats what I need...my family has been ""plagued by video games"" for many years as an outlet but then the outlet becomes an escape and then the escape becomes your reason to destroy the sun. Sorry to see you go druid and ya'' know I would do the same thing in ur shoes...I really would...

Weak? In case of games, I call that integrity, it sounds much better.

I''ve sold them all and started over a couple of times over the years. It happens. Aside from losing a few classic games I kinda wish I had back, there''s no harm in it.

Ok tonight I am axing my Windows installation and installing Gentoo linux. I am then going to give my windows cd and key to my friend who I know will not give them back to me if I tell him not to.
This is going to be tough and I have to do it as soon as I get home from work. My idea behind this is that the linux installation will still allow me to get the music and other such things I need online. I will basically lose what time I have put into EQ2 and even Vampire which sucks, but I have to do this now while I am motivated.
If I were more disciplined I could just budget my time better, but I''m not and since I don''t have cable or any other forms of entertainment I will finally get something done. It sucks but I am excited at the same time, if that makes any sense.

.... and that''s when he discovered online porn and masturbation. All was lost again... and sticky.
(edit added quote. Because I think it helps.)
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
Gentoo is my baby.
The install routine actually isn''t nearly as hard it was before - it doesn''t deserve the ""so hard to install"" label (conversely, it doesn''t deserve the ""uber-leet"" label either - it''s really no more so than Debian).
The nice part about Gentoo is not having to deal with various package repositories. It gets a little old in Debian, and VERY old with the .RPM based distros. If you want it, it''s probably in Portage.

I''ll be around, just filled out my forms so that a non-credit student can use the computer labs on campus for when I get there. For now, my wife convinced me to wait another week before heading down. And we''re making the most of this extra week.
Just bought a pair of boots that cost more than my xbox did, so I''m definitely committed now.
