GWJ blocked finally(forget work, I am back)
Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 - 6:25pm
Well, it has been a great experience posting on GWJ from work the last couple of years but it has finally come to an end.....Websense now blocks the GWJ site at work.
So, my posting is going to drop off dramatically. I hope to post here more in the evenings and weekends. But, by the time I get home and eat, workout, spend time with the wife, and play WoW....I don't have much time to post.

Oh man, that''s a bummer. Can''t you use anonymizer or some other proxy?

We have plenty of people who watch for any workarounds.

Encrypt it Flux. If they try to break it, report them to Homeland Security/The FBI for violations to the DMCA.

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
Actually, luckily for me, I''ve been using PCAnywhere to access a computer from home for a while now. Work started getting pissy about web time even for IT people (but not curiously ever noticing that we don''t take things like coffee breaks) and I use PCAnywhere everyday anyway.
I'm still right here

That''s a real bummer Flux, sorry to hear. I don''t know what I would do if my work blocked this site. It''s just too horrible to imagine. I''d have to actually be productive the whole time.
Well, I do work in IT and have plenty of friends in the server group and I know the security officer personally BUT I don''t trust him.
What sucks is that I am the type of person who likes to read GWJ every 5 to 10 mins for new posts or topics. I hate going back to look over 150 posts at the end of the day. I guess I will have to adjust.

Yeah I''ve barely taken any coffee breaks or lunches since I''ve quit smoking, so it definitely leads to more GWJ time.
*Shrugs*.. Slashdot?

I wondered where you were today Flux, too bad to hear that!
SSH+Proxy. Tunnel your proxy over your SSH connection, they cannot do anything about it except block SSH entirely, and sys admins are very wary to do that since alot of times you need SSH to do actual work tasks. That''s how I did it where I used to work.

http://gwj.tacticalgamer.com/ still works in case that''s not blocked yet.

They got to me too. Websense finally caught it. So I guess it will be linux sites and Ars Technica for during the day, and GWJ at night from now on. Too bad, because this site kept me sane during the day.

Funny Thing I have been blocked at work this week too. Strange that this happened to two people the same week.
Is it true sailors are "every ounce a seaman?"
I think Websense updates the proxies for all the clients, so if somebody from there blocked us it''d propogate to all the clients at nearly the same time.

Yep, it got me too. Our Websense works on a traffic light system, so I can still click through and read. It does help that I can pass off some of my looking at game related sites as work.
My first post today, wow. I feel like I am not even part of GWJ anymore
I hope to see most of you online.

Don''t leave us Flux! ;_;
Luckily i was able to tap into the cablemodem line we use to let people plug their non-company computers in and not infect our network. I don''t know what I''d do if they blocked me... maybe switch to wireless and tap into the company downstairs?
I am in at work right now via gwj.tacticalgamer.com.
Work can bite me.

I was wondering why you hadn''t responded to my suggestion regarding whether it worked or not. Glad to see you''re back.

*chuckle* Until they track the URL through the firewall.

Yeah, sorry I didn''t respond earlier Grump. I have been in a daze since it was first blocked. I didn''t know how to act.
CEJ,
Never!

They monitor everything here as well, requiring a login and password to visit any site. Luckily I just went into the wiring closet and connected one port from the DSL router over to one of the network jacks at my desk. DSL is wide open and unmonitored.
WAR- Iron Rock - Cigaro/Engineer, Maersk/Witch Hunter
They lock the network down but then leave the closet open, hilarious!
Brilliant. Give yourself a gold star.
Well, if they aren''t monitoring firewall and net usage then they aren''t trying. Suffice it to say, you''d pop on my list but there''s no way I''m shutting off my access to GWJ.
Alternative note: The alternative web proxies aren''t such a bad idea. We have more than a few folks try to get around our user monitoring system via the use of a 3rd party web cache. It''ll cost them their jobs, but they try anyways.

Yep..i am locked as of this week as well.
