Battlestar Galactica
Monday, December 6th, 2004 - 9:41am
I've been out of the loop for quite some time when it comes to TV, and I was hoping someone could explain this new Battlestar Galactica series. From what I can gather, it played earlier in 2004 as some kind of mini series on SciFi, but is now an actual TV series -- in the UK?!? I was looking all around SciFi.com, but all I could find was reference to another 3-part mini series coming in January 2005. Are they planning on repackaging the UK's weekly show and showing it in three days? Why are they not just making a weekly show of it?

It was a ""reimagined"" miniseries in December of last year that rebooted the story from scratch. Diehards seemed to hate it. I found it interesting enough to warrant watching again. A little heavy on the ""hot chick for the sake of having a hot chick"" factor that has slowly degraded Star Trek over the years, but I kind of dug the battle camera stuff and some of the ""darker"" decisions that had to be made in it.
The mini did well enough that SciFi saw fit to approve a 13 episode series that starts in January. They are holding out on a second season decision, but are prepared to approve it if the numbers look good enough. I assume this thing is expensive as hell to make, since they''ve been working for a year on the series and aren''t even sure how far they''ll go with it.
What you found on scifi.com was probably a scheduled rebroadcast of the original mini. It only makes sense to show it before kicking off the real thing to refresh our memories.

Correctiong, buzz, the series is already playing in the UK. According to a deal that Sci-Fi signed with one of the British networks to co-finance the show, they got the series overseas months before it was supposed to debut out here. Sci-Fi''s holding off on its decision to go with a second season until it starts here, but there''s a fear that thanks to internet piracy by Americans desperate to see it roughly the same time as the UK, ratings next year will be substantially lower than it would have been otherwise.

I''m ignorant of the way these things work, but wouldn''t that only matter if the Nielsen families were downloading them?

I thought it looked pretty good. Hot females are always a plus.
Also, they had some showing of the baddie robots and they were positively EVIL looking.
Looked enjoyable, can''t wait to see the series in january.

Available allready?!!? sh*t well I''m off to bit torrent search heaven, I had no idea.....
It''s worth noting that they have also been re showing the 70''s ones and if your doing Tivo like guide searches you will get a lot of hits on that.

Did Samurai Jack ever get back to the past?
Well, that''s what I did. I went searching for the first mini-series, and then saw all kinds of episodes. I just thought they were SciFi shows, and to get caught up, I downloaded everything (haven''t watched anything though). Well, when I went searching for showtime and such, things got very confusing. Now I''m torn about watching everything and just downloading future episodes or just watching the miniseries and then watching the shows on SciFi when it comes out. I doubt I''ll be able to resist....
Yeah this has been on on Sky One in the UK for a couple of weeks now. I''ve only caught about 3 episodes, and can''t really seem to like it. The shaky cam is out of control, and almost every scene seems to have some crazy cuts. Also I''m yet to see an actual robot Cylon, just the new super-cylon''s that look just like humans.
It seems to be the kind of show that you really need to keep on top of, as the episode I saw last night after missing it for a few weeks didn''t make any sense in some parts...
FYI:
www.zap2it.com has a story that says NBC TV- the non-cable part of the corporation- will be showing an edited (from the 4 hour special from last year that launched the new series) 3 hour version of the ""new"" BG series on Saturday January 10.

I really want this to be good, and really want it to last more than one season (assuming it''s actually good and deserves to). While I don''t really like some of the things they''ve done (did we REALLY need sexual tension between Starbuck and Apollo? Weren''t there enough females in the original to have sexual tension with?) and some of the things they''re omitting (where are my robot cylons dammit? Hot-chick cylons are neato and all, but I want my shiny tin cans with red dots and mechanical hums), it''s still a sci-fi show with potential to be good. Certainly it can''t be worse than the ignominous end the original met with. I like to pretend Galactica 1980 never happened (though a good explanation of why it sucked so bad can be found here)

Am I the only person who has yet to find a good bit torrent site to search? Everything I have found seems to have a virus attached. Then again, I only looked for a few past episodes of Lost and then gave up.
Where do you all look?

I know the pilot wa awhile ago, but they DID show the robot cyclons in the very beginning.
They were VERY evil looking.
Also, once again, I wonder if people may not like it because of the differences. Another case of memory made sweeter?

Oh, I know they exist, they''re just not being shown because they''re ""obsolete"" :b I hope the actual series will have more of them, but I plan to wait for the show to air on TV to find out - no bit torrents for me.

Karma, thanks for the link. I''m glad to see they''re going to be used in the series, even if the look has been streamlined.

Dammit, I just noticed on their website that this show will be on on Friday! If I don''t get DVR soon, there''s no way I''m going to be able to keep up with this. Who the hell watches TV on freaking Friday?!?
Sooo... what do people use to get torrents around here?
EDIT: I realize the boss might have some issues with this being linked. If that''s the case somebody just PM me a link, please. C''mon guys, you know I''m good for it

Hmmmm, Fridays, you say? Up against Enterpri$e? Exceeeeeeeeellent. I smell ratings drop and cancellation in the near future.

For Enterprise or Battlestar Galactica? I presume you mean the former . . .

I thought the first airing was worth a good look for the series. Definitely different from the original, but it had it''s on ''thang''.

It might end up being both. The reviews of BSG that I''ve read have been widely negative, while fan reaction has been mixed at best. Add to that the overreaction by NBC Universal and this show could be dead before the end of February.

I''d hate to see that. While the mini definitely got some mixed reviews, I haven''t seen the same thing about the series, itself. Personally, I''ve rather enjoyed the episodes that have aired so far (with the exception of Ep 5... you''ll see what I mean, if you haven''t already). Really the weakest part of it so far has been Starbuck. They''ve really hamstrung themselves by trying to put Dirk Benedict in a woman''s body; it just doesn''t translate well, though they''ve begun to add character elements to her recently. The other characters, however, have begun to flesh out nicely. I''m actually looking forward to seeing the eps over again on a television, on the Fridays where my wife hasn''t made plans for us, that is.
