WoW tips
So I figured I'd start the tips thread. Just post any neat things you learned about the game that seems so obvious once you found out, but was a revelation at the time.
For me, it was the Find Ore skill after picking up mining. Once you learn mining, under your skills (press P) you'll notice a new icon called Find Ore (or something like that). Once you activate it from your tool bar, your character will automatically detect ore nuggets in your vicinity and display them on your mini-map.
I had couple of questions that I wanted to ask in this thread, but by the time I typed this up I forgot what they were. ![]()
Oh, I had another one. To split stacks... in your bag, shift+left click on a stack. Then select numerically how many do you want to split off. THEN! drop this new stack INTO your BAG. This is very important, because if you drop it into something like a trade window, it won't work. Once you drop it into your bag, you'll have two stacks, one of which is of the selected size. Now you can drag it into a trade window or where-ever.

Same shift-left click at a vendor if you want to buy more than one of something.
R will reply to the last person that /w you.
Shift-clicking on a corpse will auto-loot.
With cosmos you can turn up the speed at which the quests get ''read'' to you.
You can disenchant in the trade window
/macro will bring up the macro screen.
When you have the chat line opened (so you can type in it) shift-clicking on an item in your inventory or on your char will put a clickable entry into the chat line so everyone that sees it can click on it to see the stats.

Can someone explain macros to me?
Macro guide
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Example of a macro:
Type /macro
Pick an icon and name for the macro. In the detail window of that macro you could put in /cast 6 /cast 7 (say they are 2 short duration battle buffs in slot 6 and slot 7 of your toolar that you want to cast right before a fight) then save it. When you click the macro button it will then cast both buffs for you with only one button. I know this isn''t detailed but that is how they can work.

Like CoH the power of the macro lies in how you can tie them together for one button press. But to be honest so far I''ve only made two. One for /v inc and one for /v silly

So would it be possible for me to automatically trigger Aspect of the Monkey when I click any melee attack and Aspect of the Hawk when I click on any bow weapon attack.

I use an /assist <tank-name> macro that I re-edit for each group I play with. I also have one for /follow since it''s hard to keep up with the person you are trying to follow and type /follow at the same time.
"If you're not a stinky-stink, you're not addicted to anything!" - Reaper
you can use /assist %t and just target the person you want to assist same with follow /follow %t.
Then you don''t have to change it all the time...

You''d have to play with it as that''s above my comfy level with the setup in this game (CoH had a whole forum dedicated to macros it seems whereas there doesn''t seem the same amount of love for macros in WOW), but most likely yes.

Yeah but targeting them before assisting is an extra step you don''t necessarily want to have to do in a heated battle.
Follow is bindable to a key so you don''t have to take up a quickbar slot with it btw.

If you have a mouse with side buttons for web-browsing, the ""back"" button is used in WoW to toggle auto-run (discovering this was like a personal gift from God).
Pet classes, if your pets hot-bar includes any combat abilities (i.e. growl, claw) they can be set to auto-cast by right clicking on the ability.

My favorite feature I was unaware of at first is the Num-Lock autorun. It''s also bound to Mouse-4 if you''ve got a multibutton mouse. Makes traveling between towns a breeze!
You can call us Aaron Burr, from the way we're dropping Hamiltons
You can also just hit F to select your targets target
(yes that means hitting it twice in a row gets you back to the person you were originally targetting)
SteamId = RevenantKel
I think numlock is auto-run too, but you can re-bind it to whatever.
Awesome on the macros guys. I can really see a use for this as when fighting mobs my first three spells are usually pretty much the same. So I drag the macro icon I assign to my action bar?
Also, once you start a macro can you interrupt it? For example I setup four spells in a macro but something happens and I want to cancel the macro in the middle of the second casting. Usually I just move to interrupt a casting, but will that then kick of the third spell, or will the whole macro be cancelled?
EDIT: Sorry if this is answered in the guide above Eezy, reading it now.
Awesome idea, Vic. I could probably bind other mouse buttons to my two standard self-buffs which would free up those slots on my bar. Very cool.

you should be able to make a macro to make a macro to asssist the target...

Part of an email I sent to some friends who are new to the whole MMORPG thing.
Sending a player a private message
Type ""/w [playername] message"" such as ""/w skot", or
Type "/tell [playername] message"
Responding to private messages from other players
You can respond to tells by hitting the ""R"" key to reply, and then you can type your message, or by hitting ""Enter"" and typing /w <theirname> and then the message.
Adding a friend
Type O to bring up the Social window.
Click on the friends tab if it's not already selected
Click "Add Friend" and enter their username
Following someone
Stand close to person
Right click on their portrait in the upper left corner
Select "follow"
Dueling
Same as above, but select Duel instead.
In duels you lose all your health but do not actually die.
Some commands you should try
/dance
/train
/v silly
Useful shortcuts
M brings up the map
C Character Info
B bag inventory
Shift B All bags inventory
O Social
P Skills/Spells
K Professions/weapon skills/other
L Quest Log
N Talents
1-9 Use the action in the command bar
T Target closest target
You've gained a level, what's next?
Go find your class trainer, I'm a warrior so I find the warrior trainer and learn new skills/spells from that trainer.
After you learned it, type "p" to bring up the spells/skills window and drag the skills to command menu bar on the button
You can shift through the menu bar by using the shift key and number. Shift 1, shift 2, etc
Useful tips
Look at the map on the top right, it has party member indicators and other useful indicators
Find a profession and learn it early. This really helps the cash flow later on.
To turn off the "1. General Channel", type "leave 1"
Alternatively you can right click the chat window tab, and deselect the General Channel

I think sway was referring to macros he has setup and alters every time. I was suggesting making one with %t variable and strekos was giving the counter argument that that may not be a wise choice.
I did have one setup in OB to assist RichyRambo.
I think F is the default for Follow and NUMLOCK is the default for auto-run.

What about weapons training? I''ve heard as a mage later I can learn daggers and I think leather? Or was that shortswords. Any info on that?
As a warrior I''ve pretty much bought every weapon skill available to me so far (except bows, that guy is in NE land). The only thing I can suggest is every so many levels ask a guard in a major city (SW for dual wield blades, IF for others) where the weapons trainer is and go see if it''s green for you. That''s pretty much what I did. I''m not sure where the dagger trainer is though (he''s not the same one for dual wielding blades) and for armor I am also unsure of the trainer(s).

In various shops that sell weapons, there may be a character named <Weapon Master> or some such. If you talk to him, and you have the prerequisites, he will teach you the new weapon skill.

Will he show me the upcoming skills that just aren''t available for me? Like have dagger grayed out and say ""level 30""?
You can shift-click on quest names to place them into the chat window just like items.

I had this in DAoC
I haven''t tried to make one yet in WoW.

I totally didn''t see the two ''to make a macro'' statements. My bad. I wouldn''t have thought of that.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Maybe I''m missing something.
Whats the difference between making a macro to assist your target
or
hitting f and targeting your targets target?
SteamId = RevenantKel
yeah the idea is from daoc...havent tried it in wow yet
precious time

The difference is between targeting someone and then hitting f to target their target
and
having a macro that specifically is set up to /assist Phragged. So I can just hit it and it targets your target, without me first having to target you.
Hopefully that makes sense. It''s more effort to keep setting up, you have to keep updating it to reflect whoever''s the main assist in your group, but less effort to use.
WAR: Coda, Archmage, Vortex <Unguilded>
I can see that.
