HL2 - stopped working!!!
Hi guys. This morning, on waking up, I fire up the game in order to finally complete Follow Freeman, and lo and behold - HL2 does not come up.
Symptoms:
- Steam's green "starting HL2" dialogue comes up, then disappears (after the proper amount of time, HD churns all the while).
- 5 seconds afterwards the HD light quiets down and nothing happens.
- Panic (mine, not the machine's).
- The second time I tried to run it, it did an update, then ran the long check thing.
- Again, repeat first two (okay, three) symptoms every time I tried to run it. No more updates.
A little background:
- I purchased the game from Steam.
- I occasionally disable the Antivirus when loading the game. I don't think this has any bearing.
- Tried logging off and rebooting the machine. No change.
I've deleted the game content (via Steam, of course), and started the preload as I was leaving home - hopefully this will solve the problem.
Has anyone had this problem before? Will I be coming home to a functioning Gordon Freeman, or will HL2 Deprivation be my lot?

And so far there isn't, but I think we'll both be a LOT happier when there is. That would get me in bed at a decent hour, and she can sleep through it anyway.

""Don''t Panic!""
This is probably due to Steam servers being overloaded owing to this HL2 Deathmatch and SDK release.

I''m starting to think that they did screw it up. But don''t panic. Nothing source related works for me, except for HL:S Death Match. I''m sure they will realize the error of their ways(thanks to 1000''s of unhappy emails), and have a fix by noon on the morrow. I''m just happy they didn''t do this on Friday.
Edit: Check that. I just tried HL2 after posting this. Fired right up. I had to fire up steam because I''d shut it down earlier, so there may have been an update.

Thanks guys, my palpitations have subsided (bit unpleasant at the workplace).
Note that the Steam forums are down as well

BTW, I think that this whole Steam thing is a bit undercooked:
- Too much reliance on being connected to the server.
- Insufficient options (e.g. game save locations etc.).
The whole framework feels immature. But here''s hoping

Smials do you mean the path where you save games on your harddrive or?
Cause I''m just assuming you know you can quicksave out the wazoo, so to speak, in all HL games.
I had the same problem last night with HL2, so after two repeated failures I gave up and played JO''s. Remember that game? Well, I hoping some of you do, because my brother (edgar newt) convinced me to join this rag tag operation on the merits of JO Teamspeak with the GWJ wrecking crew.

Can you connect offline?
I went on, downloaded the HL2 DM update, played a round until the host quit and then hopped off. HL2 loaded fine after that as well. It seems like a lot of people are getting hit but it''s working for some as well. It was almost impossible to find a not-full server last night.

I started trying to find any map but the two that everyone is running. Some people have thrown together a few custom maps (that are crap, but hey...) with the funny part being they don''t seem to make more than one spawn point and you get trapped on top of each other. One nade does solve that.
So far no problems getting onto hl2dm servers. Map levels seem very crowded at even 14 people, what with all the toilet throwing and such.
Okay, apparently everything''s been working fine for the past 12 hours or so (from reading the forums). Fired it up now and all''s well. Apparently Valve _did_ screw something up, and the games had been unusable for several hours. Looks like there''s some rethinking to be done by the guys standing next to them boilers...

It seems that _specifically_, it was a patch they pushed out. So, no auto-update for me now

By the way - just checking cant you run HL2 w/STEAM in offline mode?? My cable was down earlier today and I played fine since I couldnt play WoW... Whether STEAM is boinked or not should be independent of playing the game SP yes/no?

@SpyNavy: I guess I can - I''ll try disconnecting from the Heart Line when I can (busy downloading now).

Yep, just unplug or turn off the power of external DSL modem or whatever, and exit Steam, restart steam (let it close for 10 seconds), and it will offer Offline mode.
Under Games, you can right click on a game, click properties, and turn the default ""keep this game updated"" to ""update it when I freaking feel like it"" or whatever it actually says.
