TV shows I'm watching right now...

Preface - there are shows (Las Vegas, Lost, etc.) that I would LOVE to watch, but can't seem to find the time to fit in... or can't record, because my ReplayTV is being retarded.

That said, I thought I'd provide a list of the shows I'm watching right now, with some comments, and see if anyone had any gems I'm missing.

Sunday:
American Dreams - Probably cheesy, but I've always liked the time period. Has that early-Sunday night NBC glow to it, but they do seem to deal with the issues of the area from a pretty personal point of view.
Desperate Housewives - Started out as 'I need something to watch at this time' but MAN, is this show a guilty little pleasure. All the 'wives' are quite attractive, and with great direction and plots destined for "Melrose Place" type fame, you gotta give it a try. 90210 moved to Melrose Place to live, then they married and became Desperate Housewives.
Boston Legal - While technically a spinoff of The Practice (another great show) this show goes in a completely new direction - they're not always defense lawyers, and they're not always... well... NICE lawyers. A great ensemble cast, including Odo (Yeah, ODO!), James Spader in a GREAT dry, witty narcisisstic role, and of course, Denny Cra... I mean, William Shatner.

Monday - Choir... no dice.

Tuesday:
Everwood - I know, I know. But I like it. I think Treat Williams is awesome, and I've always liked shows (even loosely) based on doctors.
Scrubs - Simply the funniest show on TV right now. Zach Braff is a hilarious and great actor, and it's the type of show you feel part of. For example, a few episodes ago, one of the characters got a new cell phone, and they said the number a few times (1-800-Call-Turk)... turns out, it was a real number you could call. What's better, Zach Braff took some of the calls... even proposed to a guy's girlfriend for him. Good times.

Wednesday:
That 70's Show - Feels like it's running out of ideas, but still damn funny. Give me Donna and Jackie, and I'm happy.
Quintuplets - Well, hey, it's on. And not HORRIBLE. Andy Richter is funny.
Alias - Well, not right now, but SOON. I even saw a preview for it. Great show. Let's see if JJ can pick it back up, or if Alias will follow the Felicity pattern of Good-Suck-Suck-Cancelled.

Thursday:
Joey - Not that good/funny, but it's Thursday, so the TV MUST stay on NBC.
Will And Grace - Still entertaining. Jack and Karen make the show, but they're actually developing Will's character, which is a nice change of pace... he has a boyfriend AND had his first on-screen kiss! I don't know why, as a straight male, I care so much... but I was proud.
The Apprentice - See "Joey."
ER - It went through a rough patch, but it's back to form... the recent Ray Liotta episode only confirmed that it's one of the most consistently good shows out there. Here's hoping for 9 more seasons.

And that's about it. Friday and Saturday are "do something other than WoW and TV, Jake!" days, though I did try to watch Dr. Vegas... wow, crappy. How about you?

The only shows I''m addicted to right now are Carnivale and The Wire, both on HBO.

The Wire has to be one of the best and most underappreciated shows ever on TV.

Scrubs and Arrested Development. I still watch The Simpsons but tend not to weep if I miss it.

I wholeheartedly agree. I plan my Sunday nights around this show. As one of my female friends put it, The Wire is like a soap opera for men with a great cast & even better script.

Only downside to this show. If you havent been watching since the start of season 1, you might find it kind of rough trying to make sense of all the characters & plotlines going on. Luckily season 1 has just come out on DVD, so there is that.

This is the first season in 4 years that I''ve gotten into watching network television. Just 3 shows this year, although scheduling has knocked it down to 2.

Lost: Yeah, it''s good.
LAX: I was enjoying it, but now it''s on at the same time as Lost. Lost > LAX
The Amazing Race: I''ve said it before, I can''t stand all the bitching, but i can''t tear my eyes away.

Somehow I just can''t get into primetime TV anymore. I watch a few shows with my wife (like CSI) and that''s about it.

Which reminds me, time to check on what goodies are inbound from Netflix!

Man you guys watch a lot of tv. I don''t really get the hype with Lost, I''ve been watching it and while its interesting somewhat, it just feels like a fancy soap opera to me.

The only shows I watch are Arrested Development, The Apprentice(guilty pleasure) and Conan nightly.

The only ones we''re really into at this point are CSI: Original Flavor, Scrubs, and Lost. Shows we are specifically not watching:

Malcolm in the Middle: What the heck happened to this show? Tried to watch the season premiere but I couldn''t stand more than ten minutes. Mercy-kill it, Fox. Please.

House/The Amazing Race: Why, oh why did the programming gods decide to schedule these at the same time as Scrubs? Gah.

Enterprise: I''ve enjoyed the episodes I''ve seen, but I just can''t get into it. With it clearly about to be cancelled, I''m not going to bother starting.

The Apprentice: The decision to fire what''s-his-name in the second week demonstrated that Trump is a capricious dolt. You''re fired!

Tivo is set to record for my viewing pleasure;
Monday - To quote Buzz, ""it''s dead to me"". God bless the games that get me through Monday night.
Tuesday:
George Lopez Show - He''s damn funny that and I listen to the 5-o-clock funnies on KLOS and he use to be on a lot.
Amazing Race 6 - This wins until we get the all important 2nd Tivo to record House.
The Real Gilligan''s Island - Come on. You know you want to watch this! This is one of those, ''Ok-I''ll-try-it-and -see'' category.
Wednesday:
Lost - Pretty much me and everyone else in the country. See the importance of 2nd Tivo for That 70''s Show.
Rescue Me - Started out really heavy and then lightened up toward the end. Dennis Leary still cracks me up.
Thursday:
Survivor - Still my favorite Reality show.
Friday:
Decisive Battles - They''re in a rerun phase.
Monk - Can''t wait for this one to start again.

Kid''s Show''s I have grown to like via Tivo:

Sunday:
Arrested Development -- one of the best shows on television.
Desperate Housewives -- fun, but silly.
American Dreams -- must see television for me.

Monday:
Everwood

Tuesday:
Amazing Race -- quality ""reality""
NYPD Blue -- last season, have to watch it. Out of respect.
Gilmore Girls -- ""fries are the devil''s starchy fingers . . . yup, they''re a gateway food."" classic one-liners.
One Tree Hill -- so stupid it makes 90210 look good.
Veronica Mars -- I am having to chose this over One Tree Hill tonight, as I don''t have the capacity to record three shows at once. Yes, it is that good.

Wednesday:
Lost -- Must see television
West Wing -- Old: for the liberal policy wonk in each of us; new: at least it''s broadcast in HDTV
Smallville -- What young boy didn''t want to be Superman/other super hero?
Alias -- I am going to have to squeeze it in, but I bet it sucks this year.
Jack and Bobby -- I tune in just to see whether or not the producers have gotten a clue and killed off Lahti''s character.

Thursday:
Survivor -- cannot break the habit.
Appentice -- please fire me.
ER -- oh, the humanity. Please kill this show.
Life As We Know It -- typical high school fare, with a bit of edginess thrown in.

Friday:
Nothing.

Saturday:
The Weekend Update portion of SNL -- I''ll throw in the musical guest, if its a good one. God bless TiVo.

Edited: to add Veronica Mars and Life As We Know It.

A couple of newer shows that are pretty good are Veronica Mars and Joan of Arcadia . Veronica Mars is well written and acted with an ongoing whodunit plot and Joan of Arcadia is written well enough to endure some of the sappy melodrama.

The Law and Orders are pretty good this year. I''d rank them as SVU being the best, CI 2nd and the original 3rd. I tried watching CSI:NY but the formula just doesn''t work for me:

1. Crime 2. Get to the scene 3. Zoom in on evidence 4. Flashback to what might have happened 5. forensic work montage with music 6. go back to 1

compared to Law and Order

1. People bantering before finding dead body 2. Get to scene, make witty remark before credits 3. talk to Lt about first lead 4. red herring 5. red herring 6. arrest suspect 7. Law part 8. Find out it''s another suspect who confesses and takes plea 9. DAs walk to elevator

Do you think Joan of Arcadia is still good this season? We *loved* the first season (easily the best show of last year), but, after watching the second and third episodes of this one, couldn''t stand the horror of what they turned the show into. Most of the characters (Joan included) became eye-rollingly annoying and all the plotlines were either nonsensically stupid or moralistic hogwash ripped straight out of 20-year-old After-School Specials (""Underage drinking is BAD, mmkay?""). Has it gotten any better?

Hmm, let''s see:

Sunday -
NFL Football all day.
Extreme Makeover, Home Edition - A genuinely nice show. Very uplifting.
Desperate Housewives - Fun to watch.
Boston Legal - Alan Shore is the best character on TV. Plus, Rhona Mitra has only gotten hotter since her debut as the original Lara Croft model.
ESPN''s Sunday night game

Monday:
MNF

Tuesday:
Scrubs - Funny, funny show.
Law and Order: SVU - Wife loves this show, and I enjoy it as well.

Wednesday:
Lost - Great show now, plus Evangaline Lilly is bordering on Top 5 material. I just hope that JJ Abrams doesn''t screw this up the way he did Alias.
Smallville - Campy. Plus, some of the ''teenagers'' look like they are 30. But still fun to watch. C''mon! It''s Superman!
West Wing - One of the smartest shows on TV.
CSI: NY - What can I say? I like Gary Sinese.

Thursday:
Joey - Not as good as Friends, but it has its moments. Friends and Seinfeld both were slow out of the gate, so I think the jury is still out.
Will and Grace - I only watch for Jack and Karen.
Survivor - Best reality game show of on the air. Period.
CSI - Not since Quincy has looking at dead bodies been so fun. I just wish they would turn on the damn lights. Wouldn''t it be easier to inspect a crime seen with more than a flashlight?
Apprentice - This season is much better than the first. The Donald firing people without bring them back...firing two at a time? Great TV.

Friday:
Nothing

Saturday:
College Football from noon until bedtime.

CSI Miami (Again, the best of the trio)
CSI
CSI NY - Wednesday, if Law & Order is on a political soapbox

Frontline - Tueday PBS

It''s watchable. It''s gotten better since the beginning of the season. The last few episodes weren''t bad (well the last one with the bat mitzvah kind of dragged on. Thank god for PVRs and fast forward) but I''m curious to see where they go with the lawsuit.

I honestly dont watch that much TV beyond the national/international news, the occasional football game, and ESPN Sports Center... I catch the occasional episode of Law and Order or CSI. Reality TV is mind numbingly boring and I just cant find myself giving a crap if Bozo X gets fired or thrown off an island or set on fire or eats worms etc... I loved Firefly, but thats gone and I havent watched a show consistently since the X-Files... I watched an episode of House (some doctor show) the other night and it was pretty good, but I doubt I will see another episode or two in its entirety for the rest of the season...

wow, I''ve only see one mention of anything animated - I''m pretty impressed, I know that a lot of the tech people I know are huge anime fans. Maybe I''m just not recognizing the other animated shows, but at any rate, you can reasonably assume if its on Cartoon Network I watch it, particuarly after 10:00 CST. At any rate, CN is showing the animatrix right now, I was hoping to see more of the full metal alchemist. Perhaps I''m just... crazy
