Games moratorium

I finally have the money to get NFSU2. Was all set to run out and pick it up and the wife lays down a bombshell.

"Nope, no more games until after Christmas. Put it on your list"

Man I hate this time of year.

I would love to be able to put games on my list, but my wife refuses to buy anything computer related for either Christmas or my birthday. I have no choice but to buy them myself. I''d LOVE to have a gaming Christmas! However, I only see the new Lord of the Rings game coming out as any new purchase in the coming weeks.

I just went out today and spent overtime-paycheck money Rise of Nations: Gold and I picked up a copy of Aliens Vs. Predator 2 for $7.99 as well. I gave away my copy to a friend and realized I wanted to play it again.

Be happy you have someone to control your spending a bit. I wish someone would smack me around every time I splurged like this. My car still has summer-only performance tires on it, and we''re about due for some crappy weather around here.

What do I spend my money on? More games. Intelligent? No.

More fun for now? Yep.

Well, it will give you something to do when you lie in bed IN TRACTION!

Get ya some all season tires at least. Sheesh.

I''m working on it. I''m about $100 short of a good set of all-seasons. I actually have a tire place that''s got 4 of the tires I need sitting there for me. I should be able to get them put on not this coming Friday but the next. The problem is that I could have had them put on at the end of this week if I had just a wee bit more self control.

Again, be happy if you have someone that curbs the spontaneous spending. Most of the time I do it without even thinking about what it means until I get home. Then I smack myself.

Let me tell you my story as a cautionary tale.

It was my birthday Wednesday. Last week I bought Half-life 2, and when I told my wife my plans she seemed angry and told me not to buy it till later ""because I had so many games I''m not playing already"" (a very true statement). I told her that i was buying it no matter what as it would be one of the best games of the year and there was a special sale on. Well, it turns out she was going to buy it for my birthday. DOH!!!

So, later she reminds me to not buy anything for myself. 2 days later, I''m in a music store and buy myself a guitar stand. My wife had bought me a guitar stand for my birthday. DOUBLE DOH!!!

The next day is WoW release day and did I learn my lesson? No!! I bought WoW, thinking that there''s no way in hell that she''d buy me that (I have a long standing enmity with MMORPGs). Whew! She didn''t. So I msg Marlin and tell him I bought WoW, and he says:

Quote:
[18:49] DrMarlin: gah!
[18:49] DrMarlin: You spendthrift bastard!
[18:49] DrMarlin: I bought you WoW!
[18:49] DrMarlin:
[18:49] DrMarlin: But I''m glad you bought it all the same

Triple DOH!!!!

So, the moral of the story is, don''t buy yourself things close to X-mas or your birthday kids, because you''ll just piss off the people who care about you.

After HL2, and Escalation, that''s it for purcahses until after Christmas for me.

I''d like to fill in some of the back catalog (R:TW, Wahammer, Farcry, etc.) but fact is, there are some people here that never know what to get me, so they consult my Amazon wishlist for ideas. Just tell them, if its on the list, I don''t have it and want it, and something shiny shows up under the Christmas tree.

I''ve conveniently sidestepped the ""you have more games than you can play as it is"" argument by pointing to the CVS that my wife has in the closet and saying something like ""I won''t buy any more games when you stop buying hair and facial products.""

The real moral of the story is to admit you''re going to buy World of Warcraft upon release so that someone like me wouldn''t feel compelled to buy it for you.

I''m also pretty cheap. I can easily make a list of $20 games, maybe even some $10 software for the computer. People will just not buy it for me. If I am lucky I''ll get some Blockbuster or Gamestop gift cards. All the same, any games I buy in the meantime may subject me to ""the look""

Preachingto the choir there. I stopped making a list years ago because people never followed it. Why ask us to make one if you aren''t going to follow it, hell even use it as a basic guideline.

""I see David has three flight simulators on his list, because of that I just know he will love this green pinstrip shirt!""

The pitfall of my situation is that gift cards and certificates aren''t personal enough or ""thoughtful"". Nevermind getting me some totally unrelated crap seems to fall under the catagory of ""its the thought that counts"" catagory. How this applies in beyond me.

See, gifts in my work oriented German family has to be functional and understandable to the person who buys it, thusly, slacks for church and work are understandable, they are familiar with them. Games are strange and on the fringe in an unspoken manner in several regards and since they don''t ""get it"", I in turn, don''t ""get it"".

I have successfully trained my family, even my in-laws, to buy me games or gift cards good at game-oriented stores. I think I ended up with about 15 games and a PS2 last Christmas. Gift cards to Best Buy or Circuit City are a good one, since those arguably could be used for music or DVDs. That gives people a mental out to think that they aren''t buying games for a grown-up.

My parents are well-training in buying games. But they were Atari junkies when they first got married.

I''ve asked for games on an annual basis since the age of about 7. By now, everyone''s pretty much got it figured out. Only one that insists on side-stepping is my girlfriend''s mother, but give me a few more years and I''ll break her.
