COSMOS U/I for WoW - do you use it?
Wednesday, November 24th, 2004 - 9:52pm
I noticed mention of this U/I for WoW and also saw it as a downloadable file on the Gamecal entry for WoW. Has anybody used it? How easy is it to use/install? Are there any issues with it? Any comments if you have them is welcome...
Only dowwnload link I know: http://www.cosmosui.org/cosmos/

I would use it if their damn site would load. Anyone know if they have any download sites?
From what I''ve gathered, people seem to love it.

I haven''t gotten it to work completely with the retail version. Parts work, but for instance, I would get an error whenever I tried to use a spell, when I had the Self Cast option on. Not good.

Cosmos is pretty simple. Download from the link you have above Spy, its the home for the project. When you launch the executable, it''ll have you specify your WoW folder and then it will download the most current files (based on the release you specify). For the latest and greatest (and potentially buggy), choose the Alpha. Otherwise, go for the beta. Once you have it installed and fire up WoW (have a character created first) you''ll have an option for Cosmos both in your options menu and a small ""C"" button in the minimap.

Marlin - how do you like it? Is it worthwhile - will it uninstall easy if I dont like it?

Yup. Run the program in the WoW folder, click ''configure'' then uninstall, then change the update to ''none.'' Easy cheesy.

Thanks - sounds like a winner... I will try to install this evening - well if the server is down - otherwise I feel football coming on.

I use it, without it, I''m lost. Quest Minion is great, but I also like the additional bars... these are priceless on a paladin and shammie IMHO (only two classes I''ve tried).
Warlock nailed it -- its hard to play without it when you don''t have it or it stops working after a patch. Thankfully the team updates it pretty quickly. The Quest Minion is the main draw, but having additional drawers/action bars has proven to be invaluable as you advance (as opposed to clicking or shortcut-keying through the different bars at the bottom).
There are a lot of features that I won''t pretend to know what they do, but there are a lot of nice little touches (for example, setting an ""auto-cry out"" for help when you''re low on health).
I highly recommend Cosmos. Experiment a bit with it and don''t set all of the options at once because you won''t know what does what -- experimenting a bit at a time I found to be the best option for me.
If you do encounter any problems with it or do want to uninstall it, all you need to do is delete the ""Interfaces"" folder in the WoW folder. That''s it. I had a ""corrupt"" install once (I was getting a lot of errors), so I simply deleted the folder and re-ran the Cosmos EXE and it grabbed the newest files and everything is fine.
Just remember to launch WoW via the Cosmos EXE -- it''ll update your files if there are new ones available, and then launch WoW from there. (I keep the Cosmos EXE in the WoW folder and created a shortcut to it using the WoW icon, then launch the game from that shortcut instead of the standard one).

What is Quest Minion?

Once I started using it I can''t go back. I put my food & heals on the left bar, my buffs and trade skills on the right bar, and my combat moves on the lower bar. And I agree, without the Quest Minion everything just feels so cumbersonme.

Quest Minion keeps track of your quests in a visible window on your screen. Basically in the Quest Log you mark which quests you want to track with a checkmark, it then is listed in the Quest Minion window. Plus it can be used to identify what level the quest is (i.e. is it waaaay out of your league) or simply color coded for difficulty. Simple but nice.

It also keeps track of how many required quest items you''ve collected:
e.g.:
Flaming Mudskipper eyes: 6/10
Craven Goldfish tails: 3/4
Dramatic Marlin testicles: 2/12

Ahhh - sounds like a must have....

How do you launch WoW from the Cosmos .exe?

When you download Cosmos and run the cosmos.exe it should download some files then theres an option to run WoW. However you don''t have to use the cosmos.exe every time to start WoW, you can use the regular shortcut and it will still work.
Excellent... Smithers... excellent...

Cosmos is great... now if only WOW was up to snuff at the moment.

That''s alot of testicles.

Been using it since moment #1. It''s awesome. Can''t imagine playing without it.

Maybe, but I bet it''s uncomfortable...

-on L4DI get the same info by hitting the ''L'' key. Or by collecting another one and having it show me the 4/10 popup like XP. What makes the Minion better?

Its in a small window visible at all times, without having to hit L for the quest log, then find the quest, etc etc.

It''s always visible on your screen so you don''t have to press anything. Also it tells you what level a quest is. Granted these are all things that can be done on the original UI just this is a little easier. Quest Minion isn''t even 2% of the power of Cosmos. The map notes, auto-loot and the caster''s favorite self cast are my favorite uses for it so far. Self automatically heals you if you have a mob targeted so you don''t have to hit your character key every time.
Once you use it, you''ll never go back.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Everyone in the guild should have it loaded. Makes questing so much easier when u can check on your party''s status as to who has how many Dramatic Marlin testicles (which are a rare drop BTW).
Cyrana Mage 80 ~ Artesia Druid 72
Cyranna Shaman 62 ~ Acereri - DK 61 ~ Artasian - Priest 59 ~ Lenna - Rogue 60
Ah, the trick there is to find the Marlin just after puberty....they''re all Testicle at that point...but beware, the Pubescent Dramatic Marlin does look an awful lot like the Spotted Sulky Marlin.

I had to kill about 30 Marlins before the testicles would ''drop'', anything else I can do to make them drop faster?
I''m trying to get a friend to use it, but the page never comes up. Where is another d/l link?
