HL2 Audio Stuttering Resolved...sort of
Monday, November 22nd, 2004 - 5:42pm
Saw this at tweakguides.com:
The Half Life 2 'audio stuttering' issue has finally been narrowed down to an issue with the engine's texture management. As reported on the HL2 Stuttering Page, the audio stuttering is a by-product of the way in which the Source engine loads textures into Video RAM on the fly, rather than at the start of the level. Valve have acknowledged this and are working on a fix for it as we speak. The ETA for this fix is unclear, but I'd suggest it should be within the week if Valve are serious about addressing the issue.

Cool! I hope this works for Vampire as well. Provided they patch Vamp soon after the fix is in place.
I would assume it will since its the same engine and Im experiencing the same issues.

Got this straight from Blues who linked it from here:

Hope it''s true.
So, what with all the massive delays for this game and the ""we''ll release it when it''s done"" statements, are they saying this issue never came up in testing? I realize it''s fairly common these days to see a patch issued for a game right after its released, but I actually expeted them to release a game that DIDN''T have a big, glaring, obvious bug in it.
Oh Valve, you know I can''t stay mad at you. Just give us the patch, and all is forgiven.

The Steam News page has an update on the issue:
I''m hoping this will fix my issues, but my stutters are very seldomly for more than 2 seconds. (Does that make it ''a few''?)
There is also a new entry in the Steam Support Database:
Most of these are reasonable, but I have a big problem with number 4. I mean, what the hell? There are people with X800 Pro''s and X800XT''s (the so-called ""uber cards"" for HL2) that are having this problem. How can Valve expect them to degrade texture quality when the whole point of having a fast card is to get better image quality?
Now that I think about it, number 2 and 3 are also pretty stinky if you have a high-end card. What are these cards for if I have to play in 1024x768 with no AA? I could do that on my GF4!

I''m playing in 1280x1024 on a 6800 GT with everything cranked up except for AA, which I feel is completely unneeded at high resolutions.
Game runs perfectly after the updates. It even seems to have gotten rid of the stuttering after some of the load times. It still does it occasionally after a loading point, but not often.
