MP4 Codecs?

Anyone feel a breeze?

I recently upgraded my video editing software, and the upgrade included the ability to created MPEG4 videos. Well, that's fine and dandy - it creates wonderful looking videos, but when I go to share them, none of my family can actually view them.

What does it take to get my computer illiterate family (not meant in a bad way - but anything too complicated may not be possible) the ability to watch these MP4 videos? Searching for Codecs returned a mixed result -- ranging from MP4 avi files (mine aren't avi files they show up as .MP4 files) to some site that I think I would have to pay to get the software.

I assume there is no easy way to get Media Player the ability to play these darn things?

Quicktime can play MP4.

Quicktime is Apple related and is the devil, but I doubt that WMP will be able to do it. The divx codec may be able to do it. If so, then WMP can do it after the codec is installed. Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM REAL PLAYER. It''s truly the devil.

Really? I had no idea. I''m going to use my Powerbook to curse you to hell, or something, then.

QT''s the way to go, sheared.

It''s sad how much baseless anti-Apple sentiment still lives on.

I used to be anti-Apple too, a few years ago when they had some really horrible products - the ""dark days of Apple"".

But eventually you need to open your eyes and see how much has changed. You can only ride the old dogma for so long before it gets awful sad looking.

I just hate Quicktime because it''s a terrible players. It uses far too much memory, has no real features to speak of, and you can''t full-screen it. It being one of the worst players in existence has nothing to do with it being Apple-related.

Corrrection. Full screening is a pay for feature. Making it even more evil.

You can install Quicktime and then use ZoomPlayer as the actual player. I agree, as far as media players go, Quicktime is a little lacking.

Does installing Quicktime allow you to play QT content in other players on Windows? I had no idea.

Whenever I have a problem with playing a video codec, I always send em to DefilerPak. However I''m not sure if that handles this particular problem.

There''s a difference between the QT player and the QT codec.

The complaints about the QT player are valid. Even on my Mac, I use Mplayer OSX for video playback.

But you don''t have to use the player as your main media player just to take advantage of the QT codec. Just install it.

Not really... Quicktime still doesn''t provide an ActiveFilter or whatever they''re calling them now that will work in other players. What ZoomPlayer does is use the Quicktime ActiveX control to play .MOV and .MP4 files. Other players may do it too, I''m not sure.

There is also a ""quicktime alternative"" codec out there, which I think is just a strip of the codecs from Quicktime bundled into an installer without the Quicktime player. A google search for it should yield a link.

How are you finding the newer versions of Mplayer? I found the betas from earlier this year were really unreliable on my G5 and my Powerbook. Wouldn''t play smoothly and in some cases wouldn''t even play some files. I''ve been using VLC and, other than needing some work for a better UI, it has been very good.

Thanks Marlin, hit Google for ""Quicktime Alternative"" and it works like a charm!
