I''m buying tomorrow morning...I pre ordered a day too late...but I dont get an emplyee discount on new systems, so I''m buying elsewhere and using my pre-order money towards mario 64 ds.

Our local Walmart had a DS with Metroid as a demo. The wife tried it out and to quote her ""Oooooh, that''s pretty cool."" Once the software catches up with the hardware (please God, I hope they make an Advance Wars DS) it''ll be a must purchase.

I really was going to, but after watching a number of gameplay videos, I''m finfing it very easy to resist. I think now I''ll just hold off and pick up a PSP sometime next year...
I used to work for the company. The above statement is so not true.
Jones Holiday Soda, you say? Mmmm...
Back on topic though, I messed with the DS demo we had today, and it just doesn''t seem comfortable. I''ll wait a little bit. Maybe Metroid will be the killer app for the platform, but it won''t be out for a bit. Eh.

I played the Metroid demo in a store and walked away thinking the game was total sh*te. Visually, it looked cool and ran well. In gameplay terms, it was awkward, to put it nicely. Plus, there were two DS machines in the kiosk, so we hooked up a wireless network game between the two - and experienced bad glitches the whole time. Stuff like a player appearing to be killed on one person''s screen and not the other''s, or the player shooting on one person''s game, but his shots not appearing on the other. But we could run and jump around in front of each other to confirm that we were in fact playing in the same game. It was crap that reminded me of some horrible old DOS game networking code, like Corridor 7.
I walked away extremely disappointed. I think the hardware''s neat, but the Metroid game is scratched way the hell off my list.

Picking mine up on Thursday, will probably get Touch the Magic and Mario (for my son). Very excited, although I''m still in a Halo 2 afterglow. I''d buy the DS just for Wario Ware, any other game is a plus.
DS looked better than I thought. Graphics were much better than what I was expecting. But unless they come out with some cool 3rd party apps or some way to modify it I won''t get one.

The problem I see is that there are no decent games coming out at release time. My daughter wanted one for Christmas, and we checked the games available at and around launch before I pre-ordered on EB Games and I found...not much.
I agree it is cool as hell, but what are you all going to do with yours until some good games come out?
March is when I plan to get mine, have $250 saved up for the spree already. Seems like all the good 3rd party titles will start rolling in at that time.
All I can say is buy squeenix, for it means that they''ll notice the interest and squat out a FFT game.
I''ve never been so tempted to steal in my life, but yesterday at work I was in the storeroom and I noticed a stack of 10 DSs ready to go on the shelfs when the street date hit... I just know it''ll be a hot item no one can get for Christmas this year and you could ebay it for 300 bucks easy later on... I wanted to play it too
Even though the launch titles are leaving me unimpressed, Touch the Magic looks very innovative, in a Jet Grind meets Wario way. You know the games are going to come, and there will be some killer apps. And by apps, I mean actual apps, such as the web browser that''s in the works, etc, etc. I can''t wait until the hackers have at it and let me launch custom programs via a 1GB SD card.
If anything, I''m giving my money to Nintendo because unlike some other companies, they are the only one left with the balls to try something new and shake the industry instead of holding the cards to it''s chest and letting others do so first (*cough* Sony)
GameGuru.. washed out screens? Dimmer than the GBA? I''ve been hearing how much more colorful and ""punchier"" it is than the GBA.
I hope you can post a pretty good review after a day or two playing with it. While I''m still 99% sure I''ll be picking one up in a couple days (pre-order at EB) I''d like to get some solid, honest opinions. It''s disconcerting that you think it''s cheaply made.
I hear the controls are a bitch until you get used to it, how do you find that thumb-strap? How are Metroid and Mario?
Screens are pretty washed out looking.. probably because they are touch screens..
Do you mean the screens aren''t very clear or the games aren''t very bright, colourful, ect?
How does Mario control? I''m afraid that without the analog control the game will be strange and not ''Mario"" like.
For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. ~Ron Shelton, Bull Durham, 1988
I tried using the demo kiosk at my local Best Buy and I hated it. The buttons are seriously tiny! I don''t know if I could even seeing my little nephews using it without them complaining about their hands hurting after a while. I didn''t mind the screens but they sure didn''t impress me either.

Screens arent very bright... Mario is actually pretty good on the graphics side.. its the Metriod game that looks washed out and very dark.
The non touch screen is better than the touch screen in terms of brightness.
Mario controls pretty good actually.. it take a bit of getting used to and your certainly not as percise as you would be with an analog control but its actually pretty good.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter
I agree that the DS is larger than I expected it to be, but the screens are much more clear than the GBA SP. I played some of my older games and was very impressed with the brighter colors and overall better clarity on the screen.
Isn''t the PSP supposed to be even larger than the DS? Losing a lot of the portability factor on these newest handhelds.
I''ve only played the Metroid demo as no one here had any other games in stock that I actually wanted. Using the thumb strap worked for looking around, but I wish it was more sensitive. I''ve started playing using the control pad to look around and the buttons for movement and I''ve done much better.

I got mine today..
Initial thoughts as I ran through the user setup and await it to fully charge.
It''s huge! much bigger than anything previous...think original Gameboy.
Screens are pretty washed out looking.. probably because they are touch screens..
Its pretty plasticky feeling...sorta feels cheap and not very well made..
Buttons are tiny.. I mean ridiculously tiny...and the shoulder buttons are akwardly placed.
I got Super Mario DS, Sims:The Urbz and Ashpalt Urban GT (some racing game)
I passed on Madden and SpiderMan 2 and someother boring looking game.
$311 total for the unit, games and Mad Catz DS Kit Protector (mainly for the car charger)
Methinks despite battery life concerns the PSP will have much higher wow factor.
Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter

hmm..not sure..put next to eachother in certain screenshots the PSP looks slightly wider but much thinner and not as tall.. especially when unfolded.
Its hard to imagine the PSP being thicker than the DS folded up... or taller when unfolded.
Then it would essentially be a small laptop.
