Project Gotham Racing 2 is a fantastic game. It depends on what kind of racing game you like. Arcady? Sim-style? Forza is coming out in the not to distant future.

PGR2 is better than burnout for ''precise'' racing. Burnout 3 is better than PGR2 for drifting, sensation of speed and crashes. Outrun 2 is better than B3 for drifting, precision of steering (though worse than PGR2) and ''game'' like atmosphere.

Yah, the ""sensation of speed"" is what has always pulled me into a racer. And the devastating crashes in BO3 are just icing on the cake. Thanks for the feedback

I agree that RSC2 is a very good game, but for some reason it didn''t grab me like the first one did. Boy, did I play the bejesus out of that game. Maybe it''s because there''s so many more racing games now? I don''t really know.

Burnout 3 is the best racing game ever made by man.

Rent Burnout 3 first, it is massively overrated. I''ve played it a lot (75 gold medals) because one of my kids likes to watch it and she quickly falls asleep when it is on, so I''m not basing this on some minimal amount of play.

It fails on two fronts. It isn''t a good game for racing versus the AI, as it is programmed to make the game competitive regardless of what you do. You can drive perfect laps at full speed, and you will never gain more than a few seconds over the AI drivers. I''ve never had a lead greater than six seconds, even after two perfect laps in a row. Instead, if you drive relatively slowly and carefully (i.e. never using boost, slowing for blind corners), you can beat almost any race (except the timed ones) on the first try. I consider it a failure if a ""racing"" game primarily encourages me to drive like my Mom. Also, the physics are weird - if you turn a bit and cut the throttle just before impact, 90% of the time that causes you to bounce off things instead of crashing. It''s cheesy, but abusing that is the difference between a gold medal and a redo.

Second failing is in the crash mode. The camera system is the WORST OF THE SERIES. You cannot control the camera, and you often are required after impact to nudge your car into certain powerups to get a good enough score. That''s often nearly impossible because the camera is pointed the wrong way, or focused on some non-critical aspect of the crash/intersection. The camera is BO has gotten worse with each version of the game. I''m betting in BO4 they will just point it at the sky and you can guess where everything is.

I must give props to racing BO3 online though. Without the AI''s blatant cheating, the racing is lots of fun, but be sure to use the turn/throttle deflection method or you''re doomed. Online doesn''t solve the crash camera problem, so that remains crappy.

If you want actual racing, I would recommend Rallisport Challenge 2 (also fun online, and generally filled with polite Europeans), Test Drive Eve of Destruction (my favorite, but no online support), or PGR2.

I have Project Gotham 2, Rallisport Challenge 2 and Burnout 3. They''re all very good games, but they''re all very different. I spent the most hours overall in PGR2, though. It''s just beautiful.

This is giving a lot of credit to your own opinion don''t you think?

This is right and can be frustrating at times but it works the other way around too. You''ll get boost a lot faster if you''re trailing far behind and it''s almost always possible to come back and win the race.

It''s an arcade racer though, It''s by no means realistic and it doesn''t try to be either. I can see how some people would be turned off by this but I enjoy my racers this way.

Screw Burnout 3. Test Drive: Eve of Destruction is FAR superior. With a buddy, we played 6-7 hours of EOD after only 1/2 hour of BO3, because it''s a lot more fun.

I''ve had three different groups of friends start with BO3, dump it after 30 minutes or so, then end up playing EoD for hours. It kills me that there''s no Live support. I like to start people with a nice round of Detention, or maybe a Figure-8 Race. I rule at Red Rover.

I like EoD because it has much more actual racing in it. It''s not a sim by any stretch, but you can do better if you focus on things like momentum and your line through a turn. The AI doesn''t cheat, and if you play on the harder difficulty levels they just make fewer mistakes. That doesn''t mean ""no mistakes"" though. I''ve had plenty of races where I''m struggling to get the lead, and then the AI messes up a turn or gets in an accident, giving me a chance.

Don''t just leap to the ""good"" cars, either. A race with all of your friends in Gremlins or Pacers (they are called Moths and something else in the game) is hilarious. Even in career mode I downgraded from the best car (a Rocket) because I found the extra power got me in trouble more than it helped.

Yeah, EOD kicks all kinds of ass. My favorite mode is probably Detention. I LOVE being the frigging school bus.

I''ll say that while BO3 is an awesome game, PGR2 has more ""legs"". That is, I think you''ll get ""burned out"" on Burnout 3 a lot quicker. PGR2 just has a whole lot more to do.

Man, I know I am showing up to this party a wee bit late, but I can''t believe no one has mentioned the Colin McRae Rally series. I have put serious time into both 04 and 05 versions and I must say it is, by no small margin, the finest pure driving experience that I have ever had in a video game. The cars are varied and quite similar to the street legal versions that they are based upon. Your car behaves just how you would expect on the different terrain types. However, it is not for the faint of heart. This game will kick your ass when you first pick it up. But, the process of taming these turbocharged beasts of steel and rubber is deliciously rewarding. Man, I got myself all worked up writing this little prmo, I am gonna hafta go play now.

Well, I picked up Burnout 3 last night Friday night and am having a blast. Very fun destructive arcade racer. Exactly what I was looking for. Makes for a good party game too (small learning curve, easy to drive). I''ll check out the others once this one starts running thin on me:)
thanks!

there''s a title you can find for under $15 called Rally Fusion, it''s an arcade-style rally racer much like Rally Cross for the PSX, but with much more detail, bigger cars, and huge tracks. Dakar 2 should also be in the bargain bin, and as long as you stay away from the motocross bikes, you may like this one.

FlatOut, when it comes out.(Q1 2005) Though I get the impression from the forums that this game is already out in the UK.

I''ve been playing the pc demo of this for a week now and it is so much fun. Excellent physics, good car handling, good upgrades, awesome destructibles.... mmm destructibles. Ragdoll physics for the driver. Tracks on snow/ice, dirt, pavement - bonus games: destruction derby, high jump, long jump, etc. Cars are all modeled after classic 60''s,70 american cars.

Granted I know nothing about Burnout - so can''t say how it compares. Just keep flatout in mind when BO3 gets tired.
