I can't unlock my purchased copy of the game (Steam HL2 Sliver) as the authentication servers are down.
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
Should have stayed up with the rest of us, I just knew this would happen on launch day!
*edit*
So you can login but not unlock it? Cause I can login fine.

Here is the official annoucement from Valve:
No hay banda!
I did buy it on Steam. WTF are you using Evil One, Canadian Steam?
No, I can''t log on. I WAS logged on but Jr. logged out and went to HIS profile and can''t login (yes, he could before, he''s been playing DoD for a week now).
LOL, Propa.

All jesting aside, sorry to hear that Swampy. When I got up early and had HL2 ready to play on released day I thought ""Nice, I don''t even have to wait for the mall to open and hope the game shop has a copy. It''s 8 am, release day and I''m playing!"" So, for us steam gets a big thumbs up. But, if I was like you and couldn''t play a game I just paid money for I''d be very pissed.
So, the steam merit debates thickens.
[edit:] Oh, you did say steam silver package. I reed reel gud.
Still sucks, though, hope you get it worked out.
If that was a real quote, I would poop my pants...
<whispers> it isn''t real, is it?

I can practically feel the upsurge of goodwill towards Valve steam is engendering amongst Half-Life 2 purchasers.
Requiring an online login in order to ""unlock"" a retail cd version of a game has got to be one of the biggest f*** you''s ever sent out by a developer to their fans. Do they at least have a phone service to unlock the software like MS does, or are you out of luck if you don''t have an internet connection or Steam is down?
Here''s what they should have put on a paper insert in the box.
""Greetings from Valve. Thank you for purchasing Half-Life 2, the best game ever. You are free to install the software, but you can''t play it unless you connect to the internet. The internet is not required to play, and there is no value added to the single player game by connecting to the internet, but it makes us feel all warm and gooey inside to know you have to do what we say. In the likely event Steam is down and you can''t unlock your copy of Half-Life 2, please enjoy your new coasters.
Look for Team Fortress 2 coming soon to Steam users everywhere!""
Graktar, Orc Hunter
I was playing about 10 minutes ago. Then I got a memory dump/blue screen of death because apparantly the game doesn''t want me to use any weapons but the crowbar and pistol with my current display drivers.
MMMMMMM BS. I was having fun, and it was suddenly ruined and in an odd turn I almost want to play enough to justify the ""new video driver hunt"" it''s going to require.

Ok I may be missing something here but how do I play my already validated HL2 without logging into steam? I didn''t buy the retail version I have the one I downloaded off steam but I can''t seem to start the game.

I can''t even log into steam...I get the ""Could not connect to Steam network. This could be a problem with your internet connection or the steam network. Visit www.steampowered.com for info"". I got to that site, it loads *really* slow, click ""Status"", and in big bold letters I get ""Steam is ONLINE"". Try to log in again...no dice.
Thanks, Valve:)

Oh..btw, I bought the retail version...When I opened the box, the contents looked...um....used. I''m concerned that someone may have stolen the key and returned the box, so I''m attempting to associated the key with my steam acct before I leave work (to prevent anyone else from doing so). Fun times:)

Perhaps Valve should have released HL2 normally and waited for a slightly less high profile title to test out Steam Authentication..
At least thats what hindsight is saying to me...

I think you can kick steam into offline mode by disabling your network connection, then starting it, then reenabling your network connection. If your game is already unlocked you should be able to play with steam offline.

According to what I''ve read, versions bought from Steam can be played without logging into Steam (just check some box in the log-in screen), but the retail version needs to check with Steam every time you play. Sounds like somebody''s idea of a cruel joke.

Heh. No kidding. It''d be funny in an ironic way, excepting the fact that there''s no *good* reason why you should have to authenticate to their servers to play a pure single player game.

I think you only have to authenticate once to play the single player game.
Anyway all this is to be expected on launch day and with a new way of doing things.

Now the steam login takes my pasword and just hangs there...doesn''t progress. One ot the things that really gets me upset here is this message when I try to visit their forums:

The Steam Forums are temporarily offline. See www.steampowered.com for news and support. Thanks!
Great. Thanks. Take the forums down on the one day they are needed most:)
I''m having no problems. Steam is golden as far as I can tell. Sorry to hear other folks are having problems.

Steam is working fine for me. But if you caught my ""first impressions"" rant posting, I tried putting steam in Offline mode *after* saving a game in HL2, and it would not let me play HL2 in offline mode.
This may get fixed soon, so I''ll hold my ranting for now, since for me, Steam is up.
I played HalfLife 2 fine in offline mode just a bit ago.

HOW do you play it offline?
