First Vampire: Bloodlines review(s)

The voice work in Bloodlines is on par with the graphic work. While there aren't any big name actors or actresses, the people they did get are fantastic. I think you'll especially like Jeanette as she is fun, bubbly, and certifiably insane. You can usually spot a character by the way they speak; the Brujah are your typical biker rough-speaking tough guys, but on the other end of the spectrum the Toreadors are more slick and aristocratic. The Nosferatu clan sound as twisted as they look. The real fun is the Malkavians"…The Malkavians are insane, although they might say that they are "˜touched'. Everything they say is just twice as bizarre as the last. Suffice to say, for the odd changes between the normal speech options and the "˜off the deep end' Malkavian speech options (and the subsequent reactions from everyone else) the game is worth playing twice.

Its a throw up between this or HL2 collectors edition this friday.
I am watching Bloodlines reviews and impressions with keen interest.
I crave more bloouud.... erm.. RPGs.

Ok.
Bear with me.
Vampires?
I mean, I''ve heard people talk, and I''ve been to the website, but no one seems to say ""this is what the game is, and this is why it''s cool.""
It''s more like whisper heard ''round corners, hushed phrases in dark corners.
What''s the deal?
It''s a game, on the Source engine. An FPS? An RPG? What am I missing?
I like Vampire games, and if this is something to be excited about, I have no problem doing so, but someone''s going to have to be a little more descriptive.

Someone post if they find this in stores... I''m eager to get this..

From what I hear Warlock, its like Deus Ex with fangs.

You really should read some of the Boyarsky interviews. They addressed this repeatedly over the last several weaks.
It''s an Action RPG in 3D, as true as they could be to the Rules without harming gameplay or limiting ""fun"".
FPS players will have a slight advantage in combat, but if you gimp your character development, the mere fact that you are a fragmaster in Quake will not overcome the fact that you didn''t put any points into your Firearms skills.
Go to gamespot and check out the Q&As they have on Vampire Bloodlines. Or just one, the message has been consistent throughout.
It''s an RPG. In 3D. With fast-paced action combat and behind-the-scenes die rolls determining how effective you are. You hit where you aim, but damage is done with the die.

Hmm. Fangs are cool.
Does it take out all the crappy parts of Deus Ex?
So when we say ""RPG"" we''re saying more like Morrowind/Deus Ex RPG...

Heretic!! there were no crappy parts..

Well, I wouldn''t exactly say that the chick that kept repeating ""Thanks for lettin'' me in"" everytime you get within ten feet of her a highlight.

Funny that you guys brought up Deus Ex and Source engine up in the same thread...
For the whole morning, I''ve been thinking of posting my wish, but somehow didn''t fit anywhere. I really, really (!) hope someone remakes Deus Ex in Source. Or even better, Deus Ex 2(!). Make it the way it was meant to be.
So I can finally play the damn game, as I refuse to spend money on console games (even if they run on PCs).
Do you think Eidos would totally blow their top if someone created a Deus Ex 2 mod for HL2?
Oh, and not to derail this thread completely: I really liked that review, but I didn''t like the visuals. His screens were all so small and dind''t look much like the candy of HL2.

How would they find time to notice? They''re too busy trying to butcher the Hitman franchise at this moment. They simply surpassed their expectations/initial timeline on Deus Ex with Invisible War so now they have more time to really take the hatchet to 47.

Yankees rock, you know it's true...
It comes out tomorrow. Can''t wait. But I now have Half Life 2 to keep me company until then.
Yankees rock, you know it's true...
I doubt I''ll be able to pass this one up next time I see its shiney box in the store. The videos of the game looked so damn sexy!
This is what I don''t understand about these mod teams. I mean why start advertising your doing a mod of a licensed property years before it will actually be released? I mean if they just did the mod then released it even if Eidos had a problem with it it''s too late to stop it, once it hits the net there''s no way anyone''s going to be able to stop it from spreading and since you didn''t make a dime I don''t even know if Eidos can really do much to you.

First, there is no way in hell I could do a total convo mod to make DX2 out of HL2. Second, I did hear that some mods for past games have been blocked by studios owning the trademark. Specifically, most recently someone talked about an Aliens mod.

Well, at least it''s fixable technical glitches holding it back. If the RPG content is good, this''ll be good.

Yep, it''s called getting ''Foxed'' for that very reason.
However, where Fox was just being dicky, making a full version of another game which is still fairly new and has the capacity to keep selling some copies, is something where they would have very real reasons to stop you.
As Stric9 said, though, if the mod-makers simply released it with very little lead-up, they''d be fine. Problem is, when you''re not getting paid it''s encouragement and comments from the rest of the mod community which give you the drive to keep going for the long haul.

The guys at Troika really need to get off their duffs and learn a lesson. Now I do not know if this is Troika''s or Atari''s (publisher)fault, but every freaking product that they have made has been full of potential for RPG wonders and then they don''t play test it enough and release a buggy product. If a magazine notices the bugs and makes notice of it, then the product is really buggy as they usually gloss over most PC game''s bugs.
I went looking for this game last night and did not find it.. thankfully I didn''t and now I am not purchasing it. And I am an RPG fan how are they going to convince the masses to buy this if they can''t hook me?
Even worse how long has this game been ""done""?? 6 months! And they wonder why the PC market is shrinking..

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Weren''t they also proclaiming that they were using this ""idle time"" to ""polish the game to perfection""?
I mean really, I can''t understand how Troika missed some of these things. Eyes rolling around? Voice tracks that get chopped off? I would think that these are pretty obvious things to spot.
I hope they patch these things up ASAP. Bloodlines looks mighty interesting, and I would love for Troika to have a hit.
(Disclaimer: I''m not slamming Troika. I know I''ve been a bit harsh on them in the past - and I have my reasons - but overall, like Mayfield, I''m just wondering why they keep having QA issues.)

They probably do not employ proper software development processes. Think of it as an ISO accreditation. They do not follow their engineering Q/A procedures properly, so the end result becomes a mess that cannot be managed, even with the best intentions.

Enemies` limbs stucking in walls and doors occasionally? some polygon flickers? Game shutting down for a long time? Pffff, those are not bugs, if we`re talking RPG.
As long as there are no bugs seriously screwing RPG part, I`m not worrying.

I wonder if the ""polish ... to perfection"" was more about the artists than the devs. Since most software dev projects require devs up front but not many artists, it would make sense to leave the artists polishing their side while the devs moved on to the next project. I''d expect a patch really soon for any major problems, but minor graphical glitches probably won''t make that list. Won''t bother me. Much.
"And my son, too, thinks everything is a launchpad, every bug a meal, and every sunny day a reason to take all your clothes off and roll around in the grass." - rabbit
You got that wrong, there are a hell lot more artists (textures, models, skins, levels, animation, sound, music, voice-acting) involved in a game development than programmers.

No, no, I must have worded that poorly.
When you first start a new development, you don''t need artists. The devs are just doing quick prototypes, tools, test cases(haha!), research, engine. Basically, if you fully staff with both devs and artists at the beginning of a dev cycle, you are wasting an assload of money because you don''t need a full art team for prototyping. You need them AFTER you have a basic framework and some tools.
By up front, I meant this stage. You move the devs to a new project, leaving one or two for artist support and tool support, while the vast majority of artists and writers remain to finish up the late-stage app. By the time they are done with that, there are tools ready for them on the new app, and a testable prototype for them to use.
Well, that''s the optimal case, any way. So, at the end of the cycle, some or most of your devs can have moved on to the initial stages of the next title while the artists, writers, and designers, supported by a much smaller developer core, finish the content part of the first title.
Again, this is in theory, best-case scenario.

Umpf, a couple of poor/lukewarm reviews from Ign and Gamespot. 8.4 and 7.7 respectively. Ouch.
Although the comments dont match up with the scores that have been given, it seems this game is going to have to be a bargain bucket special for now. Given the PR machine''s lack of movement on it, I''d say that might happen quite soon.
Pity, I was gunning for it over HL2. Looks like I''ll have to join the unwashed masses.

Well, whatever reviewer on GameSpot had to say, people don''t agree with him. Currently with 264 entries they rate it 9.3...

If you look past the gamespot score and just go by the text, there''s nothing in there that turns me off it. I''ll still pick it up tomorrow before going off to kill some brain cells. I''ll report back on Staurday when I''ve sobered up.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
That seems to be a problem with GamoSpot lately. Impressions and scores seem to have less and less connection with each other. Not good if you don''t have time or want to invest effort in reading the whole thing.

I''m not biting at this one yet. I''d rather wait for some GWJ impressions first (as long as it''s not a repeat of the Lionheart fiasco
).
