Hi all,

Please help me in my time of need! I'm about to drop some serious cash on the biggest upgrade I've ever done, and I'm confused as to which video card I should get. My main purpose for this card is for Everquest 2 (of which I am now officially addicted). I can't find specs on EQ2 to see if it supports NVidias' latest 3.0 bitmapping. I've seen a couple of places that say these 2 cards are generally neck and neck. I've checked out HardOCP.com, Tom's Hardware, and one other site I can't remember. I'm looking to spend between 400 and 600, but I want the best performance out of either card I buy. I read the thread saying that the people who bought the 6800 were happy with it; Does anyone have the newest X800XT?

One last question-- Is there another hardware site you might recommend that might put these 2 head to head or offer further information?

I'll be purchasing this card within the next week, so I'm really jonesing for information. It's not usual I drop this much for anything, much less a video card.

Thanks for any replies, you will be loved (or liked).

That statement is a bit misleading - it''s the 6800 Ultra and X800XT PE that are neck-and-neck. The 6800GT isn''t a slouch by a long shot however, and will most likely outperform the X800XT in OpenGL. Direct3D is the direct opposite though - the X800XT should trounce the 6800GT by a healthy margin.

Overall I''d say the X800XT is the best. Unfortunately it comes at a very steep price (and I''m not sure about its availability), so if you want to save a bit of cash while still enjoying great performance, the 6800GT might be a better choice for you.

What''s the rest of your system like, sigfry? No use plonking in a X800XT if your system won''t be able to give it enough juice.

You can try AnandTech, Sharky Extreme or Ars Technica. Also try searching through HardOCP''s news archives - they usually link to all video hardware reviews.
