GWJ 500 Mile Run Club 2014

Anyone else interested in running 500 miles with me next year?

Big props to Tempest Blaze for the amazing Google Docs chart!

Seriously though, good on ya. It's the sort of thing I should do, but lack motivation for (not to mention that the city I live in is all hills).

Nice goal Nomad!

I really, really need to get back into running. I used to do about 10-15 miles a week, but fell off the wagon months ago. I'm tempted to take you up on this challenge, but I'm not sure I'll be able to make the time.

Tell you what, I'll try to start running again in the next week or two. And if I can get back into the routine, I'll sign up and commit to doing the 500 with you.

I'm hugely entertained to see this posted by someone named Nomad.

I came super close to this in 2009-2010. I was running 7-8 miles 2-4 times a week, but I only started recording my runs in 2010. Part of me really wants to jump back on the bandwagon. It'll be tough without a great place to run around like my old college campus. I'm forced to frequently stop or run in areas that get a little too dark at night for me to feel comfortable.

Well I'm in.

If I follow my marathon training plan to the letter, which kicks off in the middle of December, I'll have run over 700 miles by the time I get to race day in mid-April. Still figuring out my tri race schedule for the rest of the year beyond that, but there'll be more running to come at that point.

It's pretty daunting to look at, to be honest.

Having said that, I've already clocked 447 miles thus far in 2012 on foot (in addition to just shy of 1500 miles on a bike, and around 70 miles swum - woo triathletes!), so it's eminently do-able.

Are you riding the Fitocracy train? I find it to be motivational, and it's a stealth way of helping you remember to capture all your training data (and hence how I can know to the mile the distances I've gone this year).

Running for fun? Bwaaaaaah?

6 miles down this week. Not officially starting until Jan. 1 but I want to make sure my body is good to go when the time comes. I DLed Fitocracy and my user name is NomadX. Not quite sure how to use it yet but I should have time to mess around with it sometime this week.

Nomad, I like this goal. Count me in as well!

Training for next years tough mudder so I will go for this as well. I usually run every other day. 2-3 mile runs during the weekdays and 1-4 mile run on the weekends.

just checked... I have done 274 miles this year. I know I can break 325 this year.

I'm in for 500 next year too.

Hmm. I need to look at how much I did this year. I think it is possible, it works out to about 67km a month. The question is will I be able to keep a regular running schedule over the winter.

Edit - I ran about 471 km this year. I think I can do 800.

I'm in. Those winter months will be hard, but that's what the gym is for!

Doing this as a group will hopefully keep me (and everyone) motivated.

If you want to track things a different way, and you like the Lord of the Rings, you could take your walk to Mordor:

500 is a bit much for me (350 is a more realistic goal for me) but you've got me interested in tracking how far I run in a year.

Runkeeper. Free, with a free app ( for iOS at least) for pretty seamless tracking. Can input distances manually if you prefer.

What the hell. I'm in.

I'm just ticking over 500 miles (800km) for the year this week. I use RunningAhead to track. I'm hoping to get up to 1200kms next year so I'm in. Ideally I'll hit 2000kms on the bike too. I gotta get started swimming, but man the northish Atlantic is coooooold.

If you stick with Fitocracy, you already are tracking that information. Click "YOU" on the top bar, then Performance on the left sidebar, and then you can see historical data for any activity, and you can export it if you want to mess about with that data yourself.

I use Map My Run on iOS and it tracks everything as well for free.

So hard to run in the cold and I hate treadmills so much.

This is intriguing me. 500 is pretty easy for me. I think I might try for 1,000. That would be an average of 2.75 a day.

Should someone make a google page?

Im interested, but im not sure if my knees will be up to par by then for running. Hopefully the next two months of the elliptical/machines will have them strengthened enough to commit.

I actually might start recording if someone does something like this. I generally run 18-20 miles a week.

Would a Google spreadsheet work? That's a pretty simple way to track numbers, and it's easy to control who has read/write permissions.

Runkeeper and Fitocracy are integrated and like, best buds. You just have to link the two in your fitocracy account info.

I'm in for it. Glad fitocracy finally exposes the data entered.

For those, like me, who will be doing a lot of winter (and by winter, I don't mean cold, I actually mean winter with cold *and* snow and slush), the Running Room has a whole bunch of gear I will probably be picking up. Primarily a jacket/shell, gloves and a set of cleat-type crampons that slip over your normal running shoes.

I'm trying to fight through the my lungs burning not being used to cold air. I started running last year in March so I never really had this problem. I hear it goes away after a few cold runs.

Man I really need to get my running shoes strapped back on. OK, I'm in.

I may have to cheat with this conversion, but from what I've read: 10 minutes of jumping rope is comparable to an eight minute mile.

6 more miles last week. Going for 8 this week.

I'm in. GWJ-Cod on Fitocracy.
On a side note, I'm planning to try to taste 500 different beers in 2013 too.
