Wow v. Everquest?
Thursday, November 11th, 2004 - 11:32am
Okay, if this isn't kosher I'm sure someone will kill the thread.
What are the general thoughts? I've played WoW and like it, but I may be in a lull of not playing as it's seems more and more likely that they will wipe the characters (I have no desire to play a bunch now just to recreate this character that I like).
So I'm now trying to figure out which one I want to get, because unlike some others in this world, I can guaranty it will not be both.
I'd just go get the Everquest II demo and compare for myself, but, well, after poking around a bit it appears there is no Everquest II demo.
So for those who have played both, what are your thoughts.

I guess this would be my chance to compare the two but I probably won''t bother because I tend to make people mad with my opinion.
So, to keep it short, they are both good games.

Compare, damn it! Compare and CONFORM!
But how will I make it through the day without my daily dose of Flux-Rage.

Ok, I can give you a few pros and cons of WoW since I have put in a decent amount of time with it:
PRO:
1.Fast and enjoyable combat.
2.Best art direction of any mmorpg to date.
3.Fantastic sound (music and ambient)
4.Great for solo play and/or group play.
5.Nice PVP reward system which is contantly improving.
CON:
1.Death penalty isn''t much but the price for repairing item decay upon death needs to be adjusted a bit.
2.Crowding is an issue for now but hopefully that will thin out over time.
3.Enemy pathing during a fight needs alot of work.
4.Some classes still need attention but that will come with patches.
5.I have to go to work 5 days a week and can''t play it full time.

And now EQII?

1.Combat ""lock"" system is brilliant.
2.Rendering engine :sexy pixel-shaded water!
3.Nice sounds and superior fighting animation over other mmorpgs
CON:
1.Rendering engine(again): looks washed out and performs pretty poor in my personal opinion.
2.Some quests require you to kill 100 to 500 of a type of mob, that is a bit much even for a generic quest of that nature.
3.Killing the big bad boss mobs will more than likely take the limit of 24 people and I don''t have time for that anymore. I know this is speculation but I know SOE''s ways.
Like I said, both are great and I wish I had time for both. But, I don''t, so I am going with WoW.

WoW Fanboys vs EQ2 Fanboys!!
FIGHT FIGHT!
I have no opinion since I''ll never play EQ2... that is until its a free download and a 7 or 30 day trial and/or I''m bored with WoW
So that day may never come for 2 reasons.
Oh...and I can''t imagine someone having enough time to play both.. especially with all the other games out.

Incidentally, if there is an Everquest II demo out there that I''ve missed, someone please let me know.
A coworker of mine (a diehard EQ player) and myself (diehard WoW player) just had this discussion and pretty much came to the conclusion that they are both incredible games but with two little subtleties. Everquest 2 appears to favor the epic roleplayer that enjoys large storylines and has the PC muscle to run a graphic intensive world with an edge of realism. WoW, in my opinion, is aimed more at the casual player that enjoys a fanciful world of adventure in line with the LOTR and fantasy books.
It''s almost like comparing early-David Eddings, Terry Goodkind, George R.R. Martin or Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) books, which I classify as realistic-fantasy, with the works of R.A. Salvatore, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman and J.R.R. Tolkien, which I see has being high-fantasy. They are all great storylines but there''s definately a difference between the two different groups.
Personally, I''m hooked on WoW which really draws heavily on LOTR. I tried EQ2, and while it was cool and I loved the voicework and graphics it was just not what I was looking for in a ""game"".

I won''t go into much detail but if I had to choose between the two I would choose WoW. I LOVE the interface with Cosmos and it runs great and the graphics are good. EQ2 for me the animation is good but the graphics are ok, but the game seems much deeper the longer you play. RIght now I am playing both so we will see which one holds up.
I chose EQ2.
Not into the WoW graphics, plus I did not feel as ''immersed'' in WoW.
Missions that have that many large mobs are for rare and betrayal quests.
Crafting sysytem is pretty cool even for an anti-crafter like myself.
WoW=solo play mostly forever
EQ2 = solo to teens then need some grouping
EQ2 COn system is exellent. You have alot of viable info for the mob, even telling you if the mob is grouped.
I could go on forever, but as usual it depends on your experience!

Definately comes down to personal preference. I couldn''t get into WoW, because it feels cartoony and the environment wasn''t immersive to me. The crowding is a real problem, and hoping that it will someday be better wasn''t good enough for me. EQ2 simply feels more like an actual world, and the multiple instances of zones (like CoH) helps alleviate crowds. I also feel like you have more to play for in EQ2 than WoW, and the crafting is one of the least tedious I''ve ever tried.
WoW is absolutely an excellent game, especially for casual gamers or lovers of the Warcraft universe. EQ2 is also an excellent game--somehow Sony managed to not screw it up this time. After comparing the two, EQ2 simply suited what I was looking for better. Now, if it had been World of Starcraft instead of WoW, ooooh boy!
Graktar, Orc Hunter
I can''t give an opinion based comparison because I haven''t played EQ2 nor do I intend to -- simply because of PvP. I''m not the hardcore type that wants to play on a free-for-all PvP server with random PKing allowed (although I have tried it), but pure PvE isn''t what I want either. DAoC was the first MMOG to draw me in and WoW has some of the same faction-based PvP concepts, whereas EQ2 doesn''t offer this type of gameplay at all yet.

I done them both and they are both good games from what I seen.
Basically EQ2 is more of a game for and adventurer and WoW is more for an action player is my general way of stating the difference.
WoW does alot to get the user to the action really fast. For example clearly showing you who has a quest and giving great directions to the spot so you can get into the fight as soon as possible.
EQ2 on the other hand makes you find a lot of this stuff on your own. So you have to find the quest givers, although some do call out to you and the like, and then usually not as detailed as description in the quest as WoW.
Couple other things and this is just me speaking when I played WoW I felt like I was lead through the game from point A to point B. Where in EQ2 I am tossed into point A and not lead to many places if any at all.
While you can solo play in EQ2 well into your 20s that I can vouch for I did feel like WoW was more solo friendly.
I felt both so far are equally casual gamer friendly. WoW has high level instanced dungeons that will take hours to do with large groups while EQ2 has areas that require groups and I am sure some of them will take time to do too.
--edit--
Oh one other thing EQ2 I think handles quests for groups slightly better. If people are on an item collection quest everybody gets credit for the item so none of the 5 people need 30 rings so that is 150 rings we need to collect quests.
I know in WoW those types of quest are ''solo'' quests but in EQ2 you have the option to solo or group them with no penalty to the groupers.
Very good idea, I wish WoW did that. Another PRO for EQ2.
Xbox Live: Kooter06
yeah beyond collection quests tho I have found that grouping in WOW has gotten better as we ahve gotten better at the game. When we were in beta we mostly soloed and since open we have been groups since the moment we started. I hvae found it better now that I''m used to it. And we can do quests that he was getting nuked at while soloing.
The voices say hello.
My first journey into WoW yesterday was...different.
I created a NE hunter and spawned into the middle of about 30 ""female"" NEs, all dancing. Felt more like a stripper convention than a rpg.
Think I''ll create a different, less dance-friendly character tonight.
I guess I''ll admit WoW beats EQ2 in this aspect!

Yea, but it left me with nightmares of purple boobies.
Though I''m technically now ""paying"" for EQ2, I''m planning to delve into WoW this weekend to get a better feel. I''ve got this feeling that I''ll be comparing both games to my vast EQ1 experience; which will taint them both to some extent. Playstyle habits can be hard to break.
wait a sec...the usual kill a mob get a drop quests do this..but the boss mob type if your in a group everyone gets to loot the mob and get the special item.. it wont force you to wait for 5 respawns or something..
Just want to point that out so people dont get the wrong idea..
Quests that are orientated to groups will have shared items...where as more solo like quests if you are in a party require everyone to loot the item themselves.

Two Voice Emotes win it for me.
WoW.
EDIT
And yes on the everyday quests of finding 10 ears or whatever, I wish the party shared the item. As it stands right now if you''re not the only group trying to do that item you may as well come back later.
Like GG explained though, on quests like Princess and Mangeclaw, one kill on the boss yeilds the special drop to everyone in the group.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Good clarification GG since it may not be clear to others what I mean by saying item collection quest. The point I was trying to make is that in EQ2 which has solo oriented quests like that too you can still do them as a group without being penalized.
Something else that I think is really nice in EQ2, which I am not sure if it is in WoW, in group play all of the party can target the main tank type person and go into combat mode. They will then automatically atack what the main tank is attacking. Makes it great for all staying on same target.
The other side is when fighting a creature if you cast a heal or any friendly targeted spell while in a fight with the creature targeted you the game automatically has the spell affect the caster.
Should mention in the same lines of my idea that WoW is more for action game players combat in WoW is a bit faster paced than in EQ2. I did not find it a lot faster but it is a noticeable difference with little less downtime between fights too.
You really can not go wrong with either game if you like there type of games.
WoW:
PvP
More Action Based
Do not need monster PC to run
More Solo Friendly
EQ2:
PvE
More adventurer Based
Really nice graphics if you have the PC to push it
Grouping done well
Just to make it clear in case someone is still curious:
1.Solo quest (getting 10 blackrock battle axes) can usually be shared with another person if they are on that step or of the appropriate level. But the collection process in a group is bad. I got 7 axes before they dropped one for Jadawin. Strange? I think so.
2.Bring a boss mob''s head for a reward type quest. Everyone in the party will get the head once the boss mob is killed, saves a lot of time and that is done perfectly.
Xbox Live: Kooter06
I don''t get the Group Loot in this case and another reason I''m for FFA looting (In non-pickup groups). It''s easier to maintain equal footing with FFA on these type of quests.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
Can you set loot options in groups for WoW?
In EQ2 the leader can set group options with choices of:
Free for all
Leader only
Lotto
I think would be nice if the add a round robin option also but lotto works decent for most cases.
I don''t think this would happen if you changed the loot style to need, would it?
Yes
Free For All
Group Loot with thresholds (everyone in party rolls on items at/above the threshold; threshold by default is set to Uncommon)
Group Loot: Need Before Greed
Round Robin
Master/Leader Loot
Details can be found here in the WoW KB.
Do you ever walk alone like a drifter in the dark?
I don''t know... I like them both, but can really only afford (mostly time-wise, but also monetarily) to play one.
And I pick... WoW.
I don''t know what it is about the game... if it''s the play style, or the atmosphere, or the fact that it''s a world that I know quite well already, but it grabbed me a lot more than EQ2. I played the beta, got my bard up to about level 16, and really did enjoy my time.
But then the WoW beta started. For awhile, I was convinced I could do both, and was trying to figure out how I could do that. But, then WoW slowly eclipsed EQ2, to the point where I just wasn''t playing it anymore. It''s still lingering a bit - I enjoyed being a Bard, as it was a character I hadn''t played in an MMO before, but when another game came around, I lost interest... not a good sign for a game that I''m supposed to want to play for years.

If I sign up for one, it will be WoW. For now, it''s because of the low hardware requirements but more importantly because of the stuff described above. I wish I had time to explore and find stuff on my own but I''m a GWJ and anything that helps keep me in the think of things is good. Besides, I already did EQ1 for 6 months and prefer a change of pace.
