Halo 2 Widescreen?

Just wondering if anyone can help. I'm trying to play Halo 2 on my 60' Sony Grand Wega Widescreen LCD. I've set the options to widescreen and 480i/720i/1080i to yes on the xbox options. Still Halo 2 runs in 4:3 ratio. I play both ESPN football and basketball in widescreen fine. I have no idea what is going on, has anyone else had trouble like this?

Wouldn''t you want 480p for widescreen?

Perhaps it is a TV setting? Some of the newer TVs will auto change aspects based upon input. If that is the case try making manual adjustments.

Swampy, it''s a thread about Halo 2. What are you doing in here you heretic?

Seriously man, I''ve been a little obsessed with this game since release (read: gone completely nuts) and of course I''m playing the damn game even in my dreams, no really, and in that last dream I remember looking at the scoreboard and seeing your name in 1st place. I was like ""Oh! He finally conformed and bought the game! cool! And he''s in 1st place! Wow!"" That''s where I realized I had to be dreaming.

Hey thanks Swamp, I should have thought to play with the actual TV controls. I didn''t think of that because the xbox ESPN games were working fine without changing any TV options. Well anyways it''s working great now...thanks!

In reading about a pretty big progressive scan bug in Halo 2 (which affects my CRT HDTV, but apparently not LCDs or DLPs) it''s also been mentioned that Halo 2 does not in fact support widescreen as a genuine 16x9 image, but rather as a 16x9 image ""smooched"" into a 4x3 feed. Thus on TVs like mine which stretch 4x3 images inherently it looks fine, but on fine TVs like yours which automatically detect the image as 4x3 and display it as such you have to manually tell your TV to stretch it out.

And, So you know, Swampy Jr will be playing Halo 2, so you may see me online...or him...(Same gamertag). You''ll know who is who by using this handy cheat sheet:
Uber Wolf kills you: Swampy Jr.
You kill Uber Wolf: Me.

Funny you should mention this. Last night, 3 of us jumped in a Warthog with the intention to go get the enemy flag, 10 seconds later while we were looking at the Warthog in flames and our dead bodies next to it one guys said, ""Man, this was worse that Swamp Air"". What did he mean exactly?

Well, I just picked up my Xbox, HD-AV Pack and Halo 2 on Tuesday and Halo 2 is great for me at 16:9. My TV is a 42"" ESA Plasma (Circuit City re-branded Samsung) which is actually EDTV (480p Native) as opposed to HDTV (720p, 1080i). My Xbox is configured for 480p only. I had turned 720p and 1080i on (the ESA wll do down-conversion), but Soul Caliber II, which suppports 720p would show up 4:3. After further research, I found out that SC II would only do 16:9 at 480p, and 4:3 and 720p. Messed up eh? I didn''t try Halo 2 w/ 720p and 1080i on though, but I now leave my Xbox set to 480p only (as it''s the max native resolution of my panel).

Btw, here''s a nice little database on games w/ HD support and the issues with them: http://hdgames.net
And another decent site w/ forums and such is here: http://hdtvarcade.com/

H2 looks good widescreen on my DLP projector as well. The only downside is that when the game transitions to a cut-scene it often blips out of 480p OR doesn''t send enough of a signal that for a second my projector thinks its lost the video and proceeds to scan again, thereby finding the signal (because the scene has started) and reformats the video -- all taking about 2 seconds. Unfortunately that means I''ve missed the first 1-2 seconds for most of the cut scenes in the game. Other TVs and projectors may not have this problem, but it is livable but irritating with my X1 (although it may be the Sony receiver in the middle causing the problem, not sure).

Anyways, back on topic: looks good in 480p. I still wish there was an independent brightness control in the settings though.

You blew up your cover pal, but don''t worry, I''m even worse. I usually jump on the turret and open fire on my teammates until one of them accepts to drive the damn thing.

I understand what they wanted to do when they implemented the control scheme for the vehicles, but giving us the option to pick standard driving controls would have been oh so nice. You know, left trigger brakes, right tigger accelerates, left analog steers, right analog looks around...

The only way I''m getting in another Warthog that Lester is driving is when I carjack it from him.

Man, if I had the hardware, I would (I''ve tried 2 or 3 times)... but if the choice is between jumpy/spastic JO or smooth-as-silk Halo2, the Xbox is going to win.

Ok, I''m going to res this thread only because I can''t find where the original comment was made: the split-screen in Halo 2 sucks! I was playing the game co-op last night with a friend on my projector, so the screen is about 100"". Split in half horizontally (two screens beside one another) was a miserable experience, the field of view simply isn''t wide enough -- I found myself getting disoriented in closed spaces because of it. Why oh why can''t we have an option to have the split screen vertical (two screens on top of one another)? Argh!

Err vertical split screen is only available in widescreen. You should be fine playing horizontal splitscreen on a 4:3 TV just like in the first one no?

The Prophet11 asks: I want to change my horizontal split screen to veritcal split on widescreen. How do I do that?

Simply change the setting on your Xbox dashboard to widescreen, or back to normal to re-enable horizontal split screen.

Basically what Green said.
