Halo 2 Pre-order farce

Anonymous

I had a pre-order for Halo 2 for almost 2 years. On Sunday I got a recorded message from Gamestop saying they would only hold my pre-order for 2 days.

I'm more miffed on principle than anything, but it still seemed like a crappy thing to do.

I took some trades into Blockbuster today and got a lot more than I anticipated. On a lark I asked if they had any copies of Halo 2 left. I fully anticipated the clerk to spit on me or backhand me for my ignorance. I cringed in terror at the consequences of my vile and stupid question.

Instead the clerk just says, "Sure."

Stunned, I stood there for a good 5 seconds before asking if I could buy one. He didn't even give me an ugly look.

So despite all the hype and hoopla, I now have my copy of Halo 2. The same game Gamespot told me to get my ass into the store because it was so hot they couldn't hold my copy. A game that they have been swearing up and down would not be available unless you had a pre-order.

Yeah, there''s seriously still like 130 copies of the regular edition in the storeroom at Toys R Us, and a guy that works at Circuit City said they''re still loaded too.

Everybody does seem to be sold out of the Limited Edition, but I suppose that was expected.

I preordered but only to get the Limited Edition. I haven''t seen a single copy on the shelves, so I''d say I made the right call (I''m sure SOMEWHERE there are copies on shelves, but not around me).

I wouldn''t have preordered if all I wanted was the regular edition. But you know, if I know I''m getting a game on release day, I''ll preorder and put down payment in full.

Yeah, all the hype was just that- hype. Getting halo 2 at midnight without a pre-order just reaffirms my stance that pre-orders are for the birds.

Because at Gamestop and EB it''s not available unless you pre-order. Everywhere else in the retail universe you can just walk in and buy a copy.

Gamestop/EB think they''re pretty special, but I''m really starting to hate them. It''s not even like they have the best prices! I know I buy most of my games from Fry''s these days. They always have a zillion copies, and they usually have release week sales that have new releases at $10 below retail.

Does your Costco have the Limited Edition, or only the standard.

As an aside, I preordered from EB, but it is taking forever to arrive -- anybody know about availability at the Venice, CA Costco?

I went to Future Shop today, and on the shelf were quite a few Collector''s Editions just laying there. Methinks they weren''t so limited

Yeah, in retrospect me pre-ordering Halo 2 was just feeding into the Microsoft & EB machine. It was still an interesting, albeit irritating experience to line up at midnight.

What's a Tag?

I pre-ordered for the first time ever only cause I got the LE for $38 w/shipping. Otherwise pre-ordering is a farce.

at job #2 we got a new shipment today of Special Editions, our store had over 165 SE reservations and 140 regular, and we had 12 SE left to sell to walk-ins. the thing we have trouble keeping in stock is the soundtrack.

we also received 90 more regular editions. sort of like the GTA ''shortage,'' now we have 80 copies of San Andreas in stock. and how about them KillZones. might sell one soon. right after Ratchet and Clank.

go figure.

The store manager at the GameStop I work at has been telling people that, because we had the most reservations for Halo 2, Microsoft had made us their #1 Halo 2 Distributor. I doubt his claims, but we literallly got PILES of both versions of Halo 2 at our store. We''ve been selling the Limited Edition and the Regular to walk ins ever since the Midnight opening on Tuesday.

Pre-Orders are just EB and GameStop''s way of trying to train consumers to make their job easier. It''s complete and utter crap. Don''t allow them to think they''re special anymore. Don''t bother with their ""reservations."" Don''t pre-order, kids. And stay in school.

I have a whole seperate rant about just how much a Limited Edition it was, and how there''s 10''s of 1000''s of copies out there, so it''s not limited at all, but that''s a rant for another day.

You know what? Getting Halo 2 at midnight was fun. It''s not something I''d do for every game release, but this was a fun event to take part in.

And yes, it''s not like the limited edition is an incredibly rare item, but that''s not the point. The point is that it represents a minority of all the copies out there, has a cool case and bonus DVD, and cost $5 more. What''s the harm?

In the USA there are about 1,700 Gamestops, and about 3,200 Wal*Mart/Sam''s Club stores. It would be interesting to know which can move more units. I think my money would be on Wal*mart.

Yeah EB Games over here had two shelf full of regular edition which i would guess is around 100 copies. And one full shelf of collectors which is about 50. Pre-ordering is such a scam but I know why companies do it. I miss the days a game was released and you could just walk in that day and buy it with no hassles.

Store Managers say things when in front of impressionable consumers. I''ve sadly worked enough retail to know fact from fiction.

Well the GS I used to work at had ~260 H2s preordered back in May when I stopped working there... How many copies do you think the local Wal-Mart is going to move?

Also if I remember correctly GS did indeed have the most preorders for H2, and they did get a huge chunk of the first wave of games.

As for GTA remember that if your local Cirucit City had the game GS probably had it for 2 days already at that point.

When I went into EB games to pick up my preorder on tuesday, I was utterly shocked to see how many copies they had on the shelves. Based upon the hype, I expected to see a line wrapping around the mall in a ""First McDonald''s in Moscow""-type fashion. Instead, I walked right up to the counter, where they had stockpiles of the game all around, and felt incredibly dumb for preordering at all. Last time for me as well. The only reason I did this time was that it was hard as hell to find ESPN NFL 2k5 when it first came out. Note to self: bigger hype == easier to find game. Preorder baaaaad.

Yeah - the only ones that it seems you might need to preorder are the smaller releases, like Katamari Damacy or Arx Fatalis. If stores don''t get any pre-orders for these games, they may not even bother to stock them.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

My concern with getting the game at midnight was being able to play it as early as possible with the various illegal street-date breaking gaffs. That''s the only reason I pre-ordered. I didn''t even realize that my local Best Buy was doing a midnight sale for it or I may not have have pre-ordered it.

The only reason I want a copy of the Collector''s Edition of Half-Life 2 and WoW is the DVD''s of the game. I''ve come to hate CD installs just because I''m so lazy. LAZY, I SAY!

The preorder did work well for me in that it let me pay for a game two months ago so my money this month could be freed up for other things. Like, oh, buying more games. Or eating.

Oh that''s nothing. Here''s my conversation with the gnomes at my local EB.

EB gnome: Dude, if your thinking of buying Halo 2 you have to pre-order it!

Me: Really, why??

EB gnome: Because dude, this game is sooo popular everyone is going to sell out!

Me: Really?? I find that hard to believe!

EB gnome: Dude, I''m telling you, if you don''t pre-order this today you might not be able to get your hands on a copy until late January.

Me: Well, I''ll just take my chances.

I went into their store today to get a game for my sons birthday, there were dozens of versions of Halo 2 available. So much for the hype!

I understand that hype is what literally sells games. Hype sells everything but if you were gonna buy it anyway for a price everyone else is gonna sell it for anyway may as well preorder. I however disagree with sales tactics of using fear to preorder a game, but as an EB Gnome I must say the fear is generated by the crowds of people who come up to us asking when a game is coming in and then asking how many we will get in and why was it pushed back and will it be the greatest thing ever and if you should preorder you never know but its safe to say yes every time because if we say no that one time you will be on that phone giving me the biggest ass reaming about how you cant find that damn game anywhere. ok I feel better now...dont hurt me cause I have no grammar...

Bottom line...it seems like a standard policy at all game stores to encourage pre-orders on anything..

When I go there now.. they just make blanket statements...What would you like to preorder today?

I think some employees get a little power happy with the whole preorder thing though..

I pre-ordered a copy of Halo 2 LE from ebgames for instore pickup thinking I would be able to stay up until midnight...well that didnt work and I had no problems getting my copy the next afternoon..

What was odd though was that ebgames additionally shipped me another copy to my house the next day..so I returned that since they charged me for that copy also.

When I was returning it and buying the strategy guide (which is well done..btw and worth $17) The sales guy at first was confused why I was returning an unopened Halo 2 LE when I explained what happened he got it and had a chuckle.. in the process of the return and new purchase of the Guide and the new Headset another sales droid walked by and looked at the guy ringing up my purchase and spotted the Halo2 LE box.. he immediatlysaid almost shouting ""Did you preorder that??! Cause if not you cant buy it!!!""

Despite it being 2 days later and that they had a nice inventory of both regular and LE editions right behind the counter..

Aint nothing new about the world order..it's been playing since the day they put George Washington on a quarter
