So now that it's out I thought I'd start a new thread for those who've bought it, and are playing it. What are your thoughts so far? Is it what you were hoping for or a letdown.

The decision not to buy it is really kicking me in the nuts. I have the coming weekend off, and the idea of playing around in the SW universe, is like a siren's song calling to me.

The last I checked, we don''t have a lot of songs that feature the cowbell.

I love that sketch, it''s funnier every time I see it. Oh and Sephirah, you''re avatar is about 20 pixels too long vertically. 80 X 80 is the largest we want here so get in line and conform or I''ll have Elysium call you and start making crying baby sounds. It''s awful, trust me.

bah...after reading that comment on the first page...I might not even play my free copy when it arrives.. I find it funny that the company that sent me the free copy probably wants me to see just how bad SWG is... hehe possibly a little incentive for their game.

Closing criticism threads for ""trolling"" is a classic damage control move.

I''m trying to hold out. I beta tested it but I still feel compelled to buy it for some reason. I think there is some kind of subliminal fanboy advertising going on for it. If I can just hold out these next 2 weeks until Knights of the Old Republic comes out I think I can get my Star Wars fix and avoid Galaxies.

I received my copy yesterday, and in the space of 90 minutes I installed it, created a character, played through the tutorial, and got started on Corellia. I was able to do a simple ""Go over here and look around"" mission for the Imperials before it was time to read Harry Potter to my wife.
Despite the fact that I had to turn the graphics down to something just above a text-adventure (Which could be cool: ""You are standing next to a mailbox. To the north is a small White House, there is a Bantha here."" ""Kil Bantha."" ""I do not recognize the verb ""kil""."" ""Kill Bathna."" ""You don''t see a Bathna here."" ""f*ck you."" ""Shame on you for using such language on a public forum.""), and hadn''t bothered to really get to know the interface or functions, I had a good time. I didn''t encounter any bugs, the other players were polite (At one point I had been nearly buffetted to death by a Corellian Butterfly(?!) and a Rodian just jogged up and healed me. He got XP for it, but I tipped him 50 creds. I''m still suffering battle fatigue from the nightmarish incident [""Dear God! I had another flashback to that time a Butterfly nearly offed me! The mud of Flanders is nothing compared to the perils of Lepidoptery!""), and while the mission was fairly stoopid, I was able to embelish it in my head to something cooler.
Um, I guess that''s all I can say for now. I played for 90 minutes (though only about 40 minutes actually in-game) and was able to slightly advance my character and have a good time. At this pace, I''ll probably never get to command that Lancer Frigate, but we''ll see.

I had the day off yesterday and Frigga had class all afternoon, so I logged about six hours of Galaxies time. I''d like to be a smuggler some day, but right now I''m a Scout/Brawler/Medic/Entertainer. I''ve found that this combination allows me to accept a wider variety of missions and gives me lots to do both in town and in the country. Of course, I''m probably also progressing a bit slower than some would like. But even though my machine gives me lots of lag, I''m really enjoying it. I took a shuttle up to... I can''t remember. That city in the north of Corellia, and suddenly found myself in the middle of a firefight. Hostile humanoids were popping up all over the place and blasting away at each other. What was the deal? Who was who? Why were we resorting to physical violence rather than stern looks? I pondered these questions briefly and then started pounding on the closest guy who registered red on my radar. This seemingly random violence went on for about fifteen minutes, and I never figured out what the story was. All the players seemed in the know, lots of very macho declarations (""We sure showed them!"" ""That''ll teach those guys to come here and do that!""), and I didn''t want to wave my noobie flag by asking something as ridiculous as, ""So, what are we fighting for, anyway?"" Instead, I went to the cantina and danced my ass off.
It was never really my intention to be the world''s sexiest dancer. Had you asked me in first grade what I wanted to be, I would have told you ""A doctor,"" (If I wanted to impress you) or ""A Cetologist"" (If I was feeling precocious) or ""Jesus"" (If I was accidentally telling the truth). Of those three ambitions, I guess Jesus is the most like what I am: the sexiest skinny short little guy with vestigial horns who ever funked a chicken. I was dancing for about five minutes before I discovered the /flourish command. ""Holy A**kland!"" I yelled at my monitor, ""That was sexy!""
I have, however, encountered a bug. I''ve played for about 10 hours total, and this was the first time I''ve actually been able to say with conviction: ""That was a bug."" In order to complete a mission for the Rebellion (""Go to this place and play a song to celebrate the freedom of Artistic Expression! That''ll show those Imperial Hammerheads who''s boss!"" [No really, that was the mission.]) I had to borrow someone''s instrument. I could have probably bought my own, but I only needed it briefly and I was saving for something else. So another entertainer was kind enough to loan me hers. During the transaction, however, her connection got dumped and her instrument disappeared. I felt bad, as she was doing me a favor, so I gave her a bunch of money. Now I can''t afford to buy a slitherhorn and I don''t want to go out and do other missions to get money because after a lot of running around I''m right where I need to be in order to bring the Empire to its knees with my rendition of ""Mary Mary, Why ya Buggin?""
(Stric9, I am also on Tarquinas. We should group and slay us some Gubburs!)

Are you SURE she lost her instrument? Or are you as big a sucker as I was when I gave someone my weapon to ""check it out"" when I first started playing Diablo2?

Rat Boy, that is a great link!

Can anyone give me info on doing craft building, like droids? I''m thinking about picking this up and being a droid builder sounds interesting, but I''ve heard complaints that it''s slow going to make progress.

Also I was wondering what kind of machines you guys have and how you like the performance. Thanks!

Elysium's picture

I''m playing on a Athlon 1800XP with a GeForce 4ti 4400, and it''s slow going at times, but never unplayable. Frame rates out of town in the low twenties, and in-town mid-teens unless the game is loading textures.

I''ve had a great time playing as a crafter, but it _is_ slow going. One of the things I like is with branching opportunities for advancement (I''m trained in Marksman and Scout along with Artisan) there''s always something you''re close to advancing in. At least in the early game.

Further, advancement in the lines usually feels tangible, that your new skills are measurable, and I will often find myself squeezing in fifteen more minutes so I can build my first harvestor, or doing one last mission so I can get Expert Pistol and finally buy that new weapon on the bazaar. Making it to the specialized classes is a bit harder and takes more specific focus, but once you''ve reached the point of shooting for something like Novice Droid Engineer, or in my case Novice Armorsmith, it''s a satisfying run. The key is really to play in the world, not treat it like a level grind, and, for lack of a better term, dig the Star Wars vibe. At least as long as you can suspend disbelief.

Two things about Galaxies.

1) It''s very RAM dependent

2) It''s VERY processor dependent

3) Elysium is a sad, sad little man.

I limp along with 1 Ghz processor, 256 RAM, and a Radeon 7500, and it plays pretty well as long as I stay out of the bigger cities. With Certis'' advice in mind, I think I''ll try and pick up some more RAM since it is so cheap. One thing I''m concerned with, though, I''ve heard that some motherboards have a RAM ceiling built in. How can I find this out?

I was taking a break from rabbit-punching rabbits by dancing my ass off some more (Basic 2 makes me , if possible, an even sexier dancer. To paraphrase Clarke, technology that can make me a good dancer is indistinguishable from magic.) with some entertainer acquaintances. I looked toward the entrance and was startled to see a large white goat-like animal standing there, regarding my thrusting body thoughtfully. I clicked on it, its name was Penisface. I found its owner''s name in its description and had something like the following exchange:
Me: I really like your... pet.
Him: Thanks! I raised him from a baby.
Me: He''s very nice. Very glossy coat.
Him: Thanks! (tips me 200 credits for my ass-shaking)
Me: Um, so, why did you name him Penisface?
Him: I thought it was appropriate.
Me: Because... his penis has a face?
Him: No! Because his face is... you know. He''s got a loooong face.
Me: Ah. So if you had raised a giraffe you would have called him Penisneck?
Him: (Emotes several times).

This is the sort of thing that for me, despite its massive emptiness, makes SWG seem a nice world to play in.

Hey, quite an understatement! I''m looking at either SWG or PS, and they both would require basically a new machine. The one I have now is not bad for a free machine from work, runs WC3 pretty well but is getting long in the tooth.

Not a bad idea. I would buy from Crucial.com, good prices, FAST shipping and lifetime warranty, really quality stuff. I can''t think of any board that has a problem with 256mb sticks, so as long as you have an open slot you should be able to go to 512 no problem.

Now, I''m not a big-city lawyer (tugs on suspenders impressively), but it seems to me that if your machine is running Warcraft 3 pretty well, you can probably play SWG if you lower the settings.

Yeah, run at 1024x768, all details turned up, no problems. Other people agree with Ygdrasil that I should be ok on SWG with low details? I don''t need superl33t 600FPS, but don''t want a slideshow.

Knock knock, is this thing on?

crickets chirping...

I''m seriously thinking of picking this up this weekend, do you guys think I''ll be ok or need an upgrade first?

CEO
Certis's picture

Sorry Gnome, I thought maybe we had this sorted out.

Considering your video card (a GeForce 4MX something) I would say your best bet would be the following upgrades in order of importance:

1) A GeForce 4 ti4200 is what Elysium runs and the game is fine for him.

2) At LEAST 512 megs of RAM, 1 gig is preferable but to be honest if you''re not running DDR RAM you''d be better off getting a new motherboard anyways.

3) New processor which ties into a new motherboard. Of course by this point we''re looking at some real money.

Can you play without upgrading? Yes, I think you can get away with it but it ain''t going to look like the screenshots. Remember, Galaxies runs like crap for most everybody in the cities so don''t feel too bad!

Thanks Certis. I didn''t expect it to look like the screenshots, I think I might just buy it and see what happens. I played Tribes 2 for a long time on a Voodoo5, as long as the gameplay is good and the graphics are halfway decent, I''m fine.

I''ve been putting off a new machine as long as I can, but I think it''s getting close. SWG, WoW coming out later this year, not to mention Doom 3 and Deus Ex 2. Sometime this summer....
