Arafat Dying
Thursday, November 4th, 2004 - 3:22pm
Some Israeli TV channel reported that Arafat has died, which has been denied. Still, it seems he fell into coma for the third time and the doctors apparently have given up on him. Kept 'alive' by a machine, but braindead if rumours are to be believed. Braindead or not, at this point it seems pretty unlikely that he'll recover, hence the topic title. As some other report mentioned, it's probably not a question of time, but rather a question of politics when he'll be officially declared dead.

What I didn''t understand was why has he had to go to Paris for this treatment. I mean, I disdain this anti-French drivel our Freedom Fries-chomping compatriots love so much, but even I was perplexed by this. How come France was first in line to accomodate for him? I would expect a host of Arab nations (from Egypt to Saudi Arabia) to rush to be honored to accept their buddy-roo.
Moving on to the topic of his death, I don''t think that it changes much since it was inevitable. He has long been nothing but a figurehead. The only real authority in Palestine is Hamas, let''s face it.

Family history of cancer. The world will still spin without Arafat. Question of the day is, will Hamas take advantage of this to improve their political standing in the Leadership of the Palastinians?

I think in France they simply could get the better medical treatment, no? Maybe I`m not fair to Arab medical system, but i think that when some arab politicians get bad, they always head to europe, no?

I would think the compassion of the French would be better spent on Palestinian and Israeli children effected by all this dingus'' behavior.

Gee Gorilla, why don''t you just just be a little more honest about how you feel about the majority of Americans. Well, I guess you will have to live with us ""Freedom Fries-choming compatriots"" in power for 4 more years

I''m not sure nothing changes.
If you recall, when they had the other guy as head of the parliament, a lot of good things were expected, but Arafat kept blocking stuff.
Maybe some power shifts to that assembly.
I''m not doubting Hamas gets crazy and blams Israel for his death of course either.

Amen to that. Here''s to hoping this little cycle of hate can be broken some time soon.

I also work with some Israelis and they feel it would be positive for the conflict if he were out of the picture.

I always wondered why these ancient terrorists wore those bizzare soviet uniforms long since rendered out of style. Look at Arafat, Kim Jong, Castro etc. I''m wondering where Wo Phat is and when Steve McGarret is going to drop in and say ""Book''em""
I understand it imparts ""revolutionary"" or ""commando"" in an unspoken sense but geez, its almost comical now.
As for the more serious matter of his health, I will agree with Jason that the world would be better off without him. Some people cause too much hate and strife by their mere presence as a figurehead. I''m surprised he lived this long really

My wife blasted me when she mentioned that Arafat had died (later corrected -- *insert ""I''m not dead yet...""* - why did she blast me...because I mentioned that God rest his soul, but I''m glad he''s dead (I put him in the same boat with Osama and Jane Fonda - give me one bullet and one gun, and I have to shoot the strongest so i can beat the other two with the gun...
)
I know its strong, and I try not to hate...but I think he was the single biggest factor to actually preventing a Palastinian state being formed...
Will it get better? Not optimistic...but I pray that it will in the interest of world peace...

I believe Arafat did not request to be brought to France. His cronies brought him there in hopes he could survive. But, what do I know?
There will still be trouble after he dies. The Palestineans want him to be buried in Jerusalem, simply because he stated previously that is where he wanted to be buried. Setting aside the utter gall of such a request, it will be denied. Since Palestinians don''t take bad news well, they will become violent. In the utter chaos Hamas will emerge as a ruling party.
And so it goes....

My thoughts about this event were summed up by a reader on the BBC News website.
Now at least there is a chance for peace, the first since 2000.

The ultimate irony is he will get praises for being a world leader and for his peaceful words voiced to the cameras and those wishing to think the PLO is something more than a terrorist organization that wised up and learned to exploit the cameras.
Arafat was a terrorist leader who spoke often of death to an entire race while encourging violence and outright calling for it repeatedly. Even in the corrupt PLO, he was corrupt and he exploited a flimsy political movement as a cause he could build a powerbase.
If I''m not mistaken, Egypt want him dead at one point. Suddenly he is an anti-jewish political leader and he is their brother again....how curious.
The double standard is just unsettling. I really don''t see the PLO being anything more without Arafat ( maybe a bit less without his name attached to it) then it is since it''s foundation is more or less, built on a heavy theme of hate.

Perhaps not. I say, in the slums of refugee camps, he''ll be revered much more more after his death than he was lately whilst still alive.

They never said how he actually died did they? I have heard one theory from a *very* reliable source and the Arab world would not like it.

No, my hookers are Eastern European... sheesh I like em trashy AND not saying ""me love you long time"".
And all the reports were ""mysterious illness"", ""blood disease"", ""brain tumor""; sounded a lot like what they would say in the early 80''s about HIV deaths that they did not want to label HIV. They would just come out and say cancer if it was cancer. When a friend of mine told me that it just clicked.
But can you see any media outlet (especially European) releasing how he died even if they knew it was HIV?
