To be announced at PAX East this weekend!

Announcement

Features:

1. iPad: This summer in addition to XBox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is going to be available on iPad!

2. Planechase: Not only is Wizards of the Coast coming out with four new Planechase decks on June 1 (which introduce the new Phenomenon card type), but you'll be able to play Planechase multiplayer games in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013!

3. Optional Manual Tapping of Lands: Although Duels of the Planeswalkers is mostly for people who are new to Magic, it's a lot of fun for people who have been playing Magic long enough to know what's what. So for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013, you can turn on an option to let you choose exactly which lands to tap!

4. New Decks; New Challenges: Naturally, a new Duels of the Planeswalkers means new decks to battle with and new puzzles to solve.

5. Meet the New Boss: The final battle in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is someone you might recognize. Say hello to Magic’s ultimate evil mastermind, dragon Planeswalker Nicol Bolas!

Man... and I haven't even played 2012 yet. It's sitting there in Steam, installed but covered in dust... (like my cards now that I think about it. Would my wife kill me if I tried to teach my 6 year old how to play... ).

And any word on what the Planechase mechanic is?

This is the product info for it. Looks like it will be a card/cards that change the rules of the game. Sort of like Vanguard or a World Enchantment.

"In this brand-new casual variant, you and your friends will take your Magic: The Gathering® game skipping across the Multiverse. Each plane you visit (from old favorites you'll recognize to mysterious realms you'll get a sneak peek of) brings its distinctive flavor into your game, bending it just enough to keep things fresh. Planar Magic is an action-packed, larger-than-life way to enjoy your favorite game!"

Oh thank god for feature number 3!

I didn't play 2012 near as much as I played 2011. I might end up passing on this one.

I took a pass on 2012, but I might get this one.

No kidding. About time!

oh god.. ipad version.. that is flat out awesome.. I can waste hours on the plane with this game now..

I started playing 2012 in the steam sale and I really like it. iPad version will be ideal for this : )

Would it be feasible to make a hot seat mode for 2 players to play on an iPad? That would be so awesome.

YES, feed me more MTG! I need mooooore!

I found 2011 almost unplayable (due almost entirely to load times, IIRC), but 2012 caught me much more completely. I'm in for 2013 - at least on Steam sale.

Really wish the decks DLC released for each one would be compatible with the ones after.

OMG they made Chaos Magic their own... This must have been getting a lot of play outside our community as well.

So this is coming out next week! I am really looking forward to this and will be playing a ton. Just checked my steam for time played on 2012: 127 hours! I'm pre-ordered up and would enjoy playing alongside some GWJ. The booster and promo card seem pretty nice also. The PS3 one looks to be the best of the 3. I might have to double dip. If anyone is planning on not redeeming their code I'd be glad to exchange it for them. In exchange for something else of course. Here's my steam profile if anyone wants to play next week.

FTFY.

Will multiplayer be across platforms? Probably not, right?

I don't believe so. None of the previous editions did that, but who knows.

Speaking of platforms, which version will people be buying.

I'm definitely getting the iPad version, though may double dip at some time in the future.

I'm leaning towards iPad.

I'm planning to get this on iPad, having never played the previous years' versions. I've been interested in dabbling in Magic and this seems like the cheapest way to do it. That Planechase thing looks pretty great too!

How deep/important is the deckbuilding in these releases? I feel overwhelmed by Magic deckbuilding and I'm hoping there's a variety of premade decks you can choose to play with to get a feel for it.

I'm not up with the 2013 details but the previous versions but in 2011 you couldn't do any deck building and in 2012 you could remove certain cards from your deck. That's it. It's absolutely perfect for the new Magic player.

Oh! I imagine that frustrates any serious player, but that's exactly what I want! Cool.

Yay! A reason to dust off the ol' iPad!

I'll probably buy it. Just like 2012 did, it'll save me from the temptation of spending all the money on MTGO for a time.

This is correct. From what I've read this will include the same kind of deckbuilding that 2012 had. You start off with a preconstructed deck and can unlock cards through victories. You can then add these cards to your deck, and remove cards if you like ( from a biased veteran Magic player, you should always try and keep your deck as close to 60 cards as possible ). The lands will be added automatically ( you can never remove basic lands in DotP ).

The nice "new" feature of this version is the ability to tap your own lands. In past versions you couldn't and sometimes the computer picked lands that you really wanted to keep untapped, if for no other reason than to bluff ( is that 1 forest a giant growth? two blues, uhoh does he have a counter? )

I have not seen any mention of async, so this will probably be live online only ( in addition to single player ).

And it's out! Enjoy!

1Gb download on iPad, ouch. Will have to wait till I get home then.

Okay, what the heck happened to balance in the years since I quit m:tg? A 4/5 critter for 3 green mana, with no drawbacks, and it's not even rare!? Still, thanks to a poor AI decision I crunched it, but that thing should have won the game by itself. On a positive note, I was 19th in the world (single player ipad) at one point, so nice to play it before everyone wakes up!

Yow. Of course, I'm sure the increased file size is to support the retina resolution, which does me no good except to suck up space. Really wish they could detect and download only an appropriate files size for the resolution you have. Oh well, I'll probably be getting this tonight.

I just downloaded this too. I couldn't get into the XBLA version of 2012, but that may have been the format. Looking forward to seeing if 'having the cards in front of me' will help me out.

I agree on the differentiation of retina or not. Maybe a free IAP or something for the highres image pack?

I guess one justification is that it's a commitment at 3 green mana (bad if you're running multicolour decks) but yeah that's some crazy power creep right there.

Also on a completely unrelated note, I find it very irritating that I can't use basic text formatting like properly quoting a post. Is that because I'm new?
