GWJFL 1 & 2 (& 3?) question
Okay guys, ever since Simpilot decided [edited to please Certis] to drop out, we don't have a player for the Eagles. Also, Swampy is whining like a little girl about there only being 4 playoff spots (I kid Swampy, I kid...).
I think that we should scrub GWJFL 2.0.
I know that there are several players that are doing well and want to keep their records. But I think that we would be better off cancelling the league and remaking it, drafting teams based on records in League 1, with new players in League 2 getting choices based on how they are doing in the league. What I mean by that is Trip and Ejay seem to be ass-beaters, so they would pick later in the draft. ![]()
I know this might be a pain in the ass, and I am open to having more than 1 league going...I just think that we would be better off having one "official" major league with all of the people that want to play.
Thoughts?

That would be fine with me.
I also vote that we use the bottom 10 teams in the league only. I think this would make the games a lot more balanced.

I''m cool with it I''ll play just about any team.
That''s fine with me, since I''m used to playing with a piss-poor team anyway
But really, I think we should give our ""less fortunate"" players first crack at teams.
--edit--
Ooh, also, if we have two leagues, we should have some sort of championship... some sort of ""super"" bowl. Eh? Eh?
I generated a virtual world in the toilet bowl this morning.

I thought league 2 was coming along fine. I hope I''m not the ""trip"" ass beater.
I''ve played 4 human opponents. 3 of them in the GWJ league. lol. Also I''m not undefeated.
Anyway I don''t mind too much but there''s a subtle feeling that we may be trying too much for a perfect league and we are too quick on the reset finger.
I''m in dead last place with my starting QB out for the year. Of course it''s ok with me

We''re just running the playoffs in the original league right now, I''d rather not start two new leagues at once since I know Swampy plans another one once this wraps, it''ll get too bloated and confusing. If we kill a league everytime one guy drops out we''ll never get anywhere, I say we stick it out.

I was actually referring to merging the two Certis. Only start one league, not two.

You should have made it more... clear. Shut up, I''m busy!
Yeah, if we merge Swampy will have to be the commish, he''s awesome and he''ll kill anyone who isn''t committed.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
I say we let GWJFL 2.0 limp along (yes, it kills me to use the term) until 1.0 is finished and then scrap it in favor of 1 or 2 new leagues. Whoever leads the league at the end of what we decide is the final week for GWJFL 2 will be declared the champion (with a playoff to be played outside the league if necessary - currently GB and BAL are both 4-0).
First the 2-league scenario. At one point, Swampy and I discussed setting up two leagues - GWJFL Normal (your average, everyday league similar to what we have now) and GWJFL Hardcore (for those who want a little something extra). (The names are just examples.) The Hardcore league would be smaller and have shorter deadlines to play games. Personally, I think with Halo 2, HL2, WoW, EQ2, and a host of other games coming out combined with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season as well as the obvious decline in interest by some previously active players, this is probably not the best option anymore.
So... I propose that, once GWJFL 1.0 is done, we create a single league that merges the two and will be open to everyone. I propose that we discuss the league settings to make sure that as many people as possible have input now that they have at least a handful of league games under their belt.
More after these messages...
I propose that, like the NFL, in order to make things more competitive, the teams with the worst records pick first. If/when we merge the leagues, we''ll use winning percentage and strength-of-schedule to determine the order. (You GWJFL 2.0 guys are on your honor not to start throwing games.) I''ll be happy to volunteer to do this since I already have the spreadsheet set up. New players would be placed in the middle of the draft order.
For those of you who don''t know, the GWJFL is why I stopped lurking and signed up at GWJ so I admit that I''ve given this a good deal of thought. I hope that it makes sense. If not, please feel free to post comments and questions.
Finally, if Swampy wants to repeat as commissioner, he has my full endorsement; but if he decides he''s had enough and/or wants to move on, I''d like to throw my hat in the ring.
Thanks.
Edit: I also propose that we not start a ""Who''s interested in GWJFL 3.0?"" thread until we are closer to ready to actually kick it off as people''s situations change. This thread here should suffice for the various discussions (what to do, what settings to use, etc.) until that time. Of course, that''s just my two cents. Keep the change.

Good post Grumpy, I''m right there with you on all points.
One thing we''ll really have to stress is how realistic you have to be about having time to play and not missing games. It''s HARD to play one game a week sometimes and sticking with it for months is even tougher. A league isn''t something anyone should join lightly.

I''d like to join the next league. I tried to run the ESPN NFL and NHL leagues at... *whisper* evil avatar *whisper*... but could not physically force the slackers to play their games.

Whatever happens, I''m in. I know there''s been a few games I''ve had to have Swampy flip the coin on, but really those weren''t my fault.
I think it might be time for me to abandon the Seahawks though.

As long as nobody minds me constantly losing I''m still in.
Maybe I should pick the Bears so I can blame losing on the team...

I''d second allowing Legion in for sure. Hey Legion, if we keep GWJFL 2.0 going, do you want to jump in and replace the owner of the Eagles?

(I was going to make this an edit to my earlier post but decided I''d better put it here to make sure it was seen/noticed by the powers-that-be.)
I mentioned over here that I wondered if there would be some way to do a little prize for these things. Thoughts?
Edit:
Well we''re still going at the moment (and will for another couple weeks if my suggestion above is accepted) so c''mon over, Legion.

I would do that. What''s their record so far? Any shot at making an improbable playoff run? I''ll still play even if not, just to be a spoiler and make a name for myself ''round here.

It''s week 3, and they have one loss (from me forcing a win to advance the week.) Their next game is against me (Panthers).

Tied for third place (with 3 other teams) at 2-1 with this week''s game still to be played. (They''re only in third because the ""second place"" team has already played their game for this week and is 3-1.)

When you guys start up 3.0 I might be interested in joining, as long as you don''t mind suckiness.

I''m glad to hear my complaints about the dirth of playoff slots were listened to, JMJ!
Well, it appears that the open slots will be filled for league 2. Despite it''s problems, I say we leave league 2 alive.
So that taken care of, let''s finish season 1 for league 1. Round about the championship game I will post for signups for league 1 season 2, and at that time the exact details will be cleared up. I am leaning towards worst team picks first to best team picks last, 6 minute quarters, 5 days per ""league week"". And, as I have said before the guys that haven''t been playing their games until they''ve been asked to will be encouraged not to sign up, which I am assuming won''t be a problem as they seem to have stopped caring.
As an aside, Demi and some others, I have absolutely no problem with you having to miss some game(s) due to real life. I appreciated that you gave advance notice and had me award the game. Some guys did not.

Let''s speed up 2.0 so we can catch up with GWJFL 1.0 as much as possible.
For the next league I''d like to suggest:
Legend - 6 minutes - Random Weather Off
Team draft with the first place teams in previous GWJFL leagues picking last.
Grump''s idea for some sort of little prize sounds great, hopefully we could work something like that in. I''m planning on playing EQ2 & WoW and Halo with my son but I can definately fit in a game of football once every 5 days (if not more).
I could... ohgodIfeelsick... I could play the Eagles if you give me a few days...

Basically, my concern is that participation is about to decline even further, not improve, and that reducing the number of leagues to one will help ensure that games actually get played. I understand real-life - SpyNavy and I are going to have trouble hooking up before this weekend because of scheduling issues - but sitting around all week waiting for the last game or two to be played only to have them declare on the last day that they won''t be able to hook up just sucks (ass-u-me-ing that they didn''t really make a concerted effort throughout the week). To reiterate, if you can''t play until day 5 or day 7 or whenever in the ""week"", I''ve got no problem with that... but procrastinating and then having a coin toss is what I''m complaining about.
