NFL 2011 Super Bowl XLVI

I wonder if Terry Bradshaw is still getting yelled at by Ann Mara. [Insert random joke about Rooney "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" Mara here]

Ravens 20 - Patriots 23 & Giants 20 - 49ers 17: I'm going to summarize both games at once since there's some similarities to both outcomes outside of familial connections between the losing parties. Both games were lost because of special teams blunders: Billy Cundff's wide left and Kyle Williams' muff and fumbles. A chip shot to tie up the Patriots missed and two costly turnovers by a unit of the 49ers that hadn't given up the ball this season. Heartbreaking ways to lose especially considering how tough both losers played against the forthcoming Super Bowl participants (more on them when I do my pick). On the other hand, San Francisco should hold their heads in shame for only going 1-13 in 3rd downs. I suppose this made Jack Harbaugh's travel plans for February 5th a lot easier.

Well, if you've been enduring these threads since September, I don't need to tell you the who, when, where of the Super Bowl. Just note that this time, your pick counts for 4, so it's either going to be all or nothing. Plus, in order to eliminate ties which are for puny cowards, I need you to give me a prediction of the final score. Watch for my pick coming next week. Just be careful, though; pick against the Giants and Mrs. Mara's coming for YOU.

Edit: And now for my pick, which admittedly isn't an easy one. Both teams had knocks on them going into the playoffs; questions that made many doubt that both would end up in Indianapolis. But then suddenly those flaws vanished. New England somehow conjured up a defense, New York played three playoff games, two on the road, and either weren't favored or not favored by a lot to win any of them. That the analysts seem divided on who will win is actually understandable since it is a toss-up (of course, the buzz in Indy's about the home team, not the Super Bowl teams). With all that said, I'm leaning towards the team that's on the road in both practical and ceremonial senses. New York Football Giants 28 - New England Patriots 27.

Of course, I have to pick the New York (football) Giants to beat the Patriots, 27-23. Eli Manning will win his 2nd SB MVP award, and IMO, will put him right outside (if not, into) that circle of Elite QBs. He currently has a (7-3) record in the playoffs, with 5 road wins under his belt. In his 8th season, he has now been to 2 Super Bowls. It took 9 seasons before Peyton got to the big game. I'll never see Eli throwing for 40+ TDs in a single season, but I think yards and completions will one day be close, and in the end, Pieface II will trump Pieface I.

Oh BTW, Peyton is (9-10) lifetime in the playoffs.

Da Bears!

Wait, wrong year. Giants.

I'm actually going to have to go with the Giants as well on this one. Pieface, as much as I might dislike him, is certainly capable of torching the living hell out of that Patriots' secondary and he certainly has the weapons to do it with. And though Brady will probably do some torching of his own, the Giants have a far more respectable defense overall.

I'm sure the over under on this game has got to be stratospheric.

I'm going to go Patriots in the Redemption Bowl; the Patriots have actually played some defense in recently weeks. Patriots, 38-31, even.

Ugh.

Giants.

Someone has to stop Brady from passing Montana's records. Was hoping it'd be the 49ers.

It would probably mean he retires. Hell, if Brady gets ring #4, he might choose to retire.

I'm a Pats fan, and on paper, they don't really have a chance. I will hope for a Patriots vengeance win, but I doubt it is coming. 23-21 Patriots.

Hmmmm, you know, I didn't think about Chad 85.

Someone should have told him long ago that Ochocinco is eight five not eightyfive. Eighty-five is ochenta y cinco.

I hate the Giants and I do not like Eli at all. The former is because I'm a Redskins fan. The latter is because of how over hyped he is because he is a Manning. On top of that, he obviously believes his own super inflated hype which is the worst kind of poison.

Even with all the QB troubles we have had for years and the fact that I was born a Redskins fan, I would not want Eli as our QB. He is solid enough but he is nowhere near Brees, Brady, his brother, or Rodgers.

I would love to see the Pats get massive revenge on the Giants.

At my high school, 85 would have been spoken as "eight five" and not "eighty five" (edit: on the playing field, not in the classroom, obviously). I never played at any other level or for any other staff so I won't claim this as a universal truth, but it didn't seem so strange to me.

This justification has been raised by the artist formerly known as Chad Javon Johnson.

Giants, 31-28 off a special teams turnover.

Maybe Bellicheck will cut #85 early this week to keep him from a ring. I'd be surprised if he were active for the SB.

Patriots. Why? I like the cut of their collective jibs. Patriots 28 - Giants 21

Deep down I think the Giants are the team to beat, but I refuse to pick them.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Men

Giants, 31-27.

Why? He was active all season, he just doesn't get on the field. Last week he was inactive because his father died.

------------------------------------

Giants 27, Patriots 24

Giants 28-Pats 17

Patriots - Ochocinco finally gets his ring. I don't think enough attention has been given to this awful possibility. If only Haynesworth was still with the Patriots...

Edit: Oh and 21-20 final score.

Patriots 41, Giants 21. That's right, I'm predicting a blowout. The Giants lost to some horrible teams this year and the Patriots will shred that secondary and make a few big plays on defense to run up the score.

You know the one drawback about the Super Bowl? Only one team to pick for everyone and everyone seems to have an opinion, even those who didn't make a pick all year. *le sigh* Well, here's hoping a certain Shawn in our midst can con the rest of the GWJ CC people into putting their Disney dollars where their proverbial mouths are.

Giants, 31 - 27

I've picked against the Giants twice and gotten burned both times, but I hate the Patriots slightly less having grown up a Cowboys fan.

Patriots over Giants 31-24

A friend of mine remade all the NFL team logo's to have a more vintage style to them. I think they look great.

For the most part they are very good but he seems to run in to the same problem as other similar projects*. A refusal to use animals when a team is named after them and an overuse of the shield. The shield is a great part of a logo when used sparingly but when every team has it the shield becomes boring.

Dislike
Falcons, Panthers, Seahawks, Vikings, Jaguars, Bengals, Dolphins
The Vikings one, I suspect, will be replaced. All of other are animals. It is possible to make a classic logo featuring an animal without using the shield or making it cartoony. When it's just a letter then then using an animal name is useless.

Like
Bills, Ravens, Browns, Chiefs, Texans, Colts, Eagles, Cowboys, Lions, Bears, Saints
The Ravens logo is fantastic. Great use of the shield as well as the bird. Eagles and Saints are great as well.

*I've seen this done a few times with NHL teams

Cool stuff. The Vikings definitely stands out because it's a bit too sparse, but so really cool stuff in there.

I realize both teams had bad years, but your friend refuses to acknowledge the existence of Tampa and St. Louis?

I want go on record with my displeasure at RatBoy for completely ignoring the Pro Bowl.
NFC vs. AFC: 42-31.

He is still working on those

The Vikings one is done. Thanks for all the comments. I passed them a long to him.

Agreed. A simple and easy logo would be to have a silhouette of a horned helmet* or a battle-axe. Could also go with a drakkar (viking long boat).

I'm a big nerd for logos. I find them integral to a team. This is a great hockey logo blog: http://www.icethetics.info/. And this is a great website for logos from a tonne of different leagues and sports: http://www.sportslogos.net/index.php

*Which is factual inaccurate as the vikings never wore them

Which could be why they used it from 1967 to 1984. Google Image Search for "Sir Saint" for plenty of examples of the shield, and try to ignore the goofy cartoon guy.

Edit: The Cleveland one is also very familiar.

Edit2: To not be totally negative, I like the Chiefs and the Patriots.
