XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

So far, three missions in, I have a flawless record on Normal. And if anyone's wondering how long the UFOs stay crashed, as little as one day. I had research two days away from completion, and decided to risk my crash site. It's size was low, but it's probably a good thing I didn't take that on as my third mission.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to open the shield doors in the crashed ships? The V key which normally lets you isn't working.

I wish there was more customization, like being able to pick a gender and class. Being able to choose a nationality would be nice, but not as important. Still, a fun game overall.

Anyone volunteering for duty? I need a stand-in while my medic recovers.

Who, me?

Twice now I've attempted to open a door next to me at the start of my turn, and instead moved one space and used my move action. Any way to know for sure when I can trust the little "A" icon over the door and expect it to open, rather than moving me?

Based on the demo all you need to do is to left click on the space in front of the door to open it if the "V" doesn't open it

Well, that's enough for one night. I don't know what they put into the highest difficulty level, but completely removing my soldiers' ability to hit any alien for an entire round makes it tough to make progress.

I think you might be on the tutorial.

I am. Is that a feature in the tutorial? After the first couple of missions you automatically lose?

I don't have the game so I am not sure, but I think I heard that there were 4 tutorials, I am sure someone can confirm that.

If it is not, I will leave you with these great words that will resound throughout the rest of our lifes.

THAT'S X-COM BABY!!!

Still another 48 hours or so before I can get the game here in Aus, figured id pass some of the time watching the GWJ Plays vid (really enjoying this addition to GWJ btw) and at the end noticed Shawn's characters names...

Karla "The Worst" Andrich... Someone's got some splainin' to do.

My excitement for this game is palpable.

Ugh, my god, this game has the capability to just ATOMIZE my productivity.

I'd also like everyone else to study this game, and understand that a Tutorial can be fun and engaging while teaching all the basics of the game. I think I just finished the Tutorial proper, and unfortunately my squads are currently pulling a 50% mortality rate for each mission (those helmets do NOTHING).

So yeah, it's really, really good. Like in that rarified "I will be thinking about this all day while i'm at work tomorrow" level of good. Hell, i'd be more likely to call out sick from work for this than I every would for any sports game, Madden Day be damned. Just absolutely wonderful so far. The weapons feel like they have a weight to them, the gunfights feel satisfying, the explosions and terrain damage is freaking awesome as usual, and I can't wait to see what other little tweaks and changes are waiting for me.

Like Malor said, 1994/95 me is SO ANGRY he didn't live to see this day come.

I'll return home in an hour and half and play Borderlands 2 some more I guess! I really wish they hadn't changed the wording in the Steam EULA to imply they might ban you for using a VPN to get around region delays.

I'll let you know. I made a quick trip out of the country. I'll be in offline mode for the next 3 days or so...

I'd told myself that I'd get either this OR Dishonored. Then I saw that voucher on GMG. Then I saw the ultra-positive coverage of both. Then I remembered the ever-present risk of post-release Australia tax mysteriously doubling the price.

Then I folded.

Edit: I also just noticed I got the two of them for the same price as just Dishonored on Steam (or at a B&M store).

This game will unlock in 2 days and 14 hours... *browses at friends list and sees all US friends playing it*

*sigh*

One of my guys panicked, took out my LT sniper. This is a tough game.

I found two animation bugs. When my base was in Europe and the Sky Ranger flew to Australia, it went North to the arctic and somehow teleported to Australia. The other one is one of my snipers' hand is out of sync with the bolt lever.

Today's a good day to hate and envy americans.

Le *sigh.

Found another terrain bug that prevents you (or at least makes it hard) for you to place your soldiers.

I had that issue as well. Rotate the camera such that there isn't any "choosable" ground behind what you are picking. That should prevent it from flickering. There are some mouse picking issues like that throughtout the game, but most you can resolve by rotating the camera.

And you can open doors by also left clicking on them. That has always worked for me after the turn I moved to the door.

I'm having a lot problems trying to remap keys. It seems to not like me wanting to change camera controls and the weapon swap settings. It looks like they take on the screen, but after Save/Exit they don't work ingame and going back into the settings those entries are blank. Set them again, Save/Exit, go back to settings and they're blank.

I also can't remap keys. I want to swap T/G to be up/down a floor, and mouse wheel up/down to be zoom. Whenever I make the changes in the config, it shows that they are remapped, but as soon as I save and leave the options, it reverts to default.

Oh, good. On game #2 I can place my starter base on whichever region I want rather than just Europe or North America. Is this because I didn't enable the tutorial or because I did something in my first game?

Where did I hear that all your units speak with an American accent, regardless of their country of origin? Also thought I heard someone say there were international voices recorded for the game... Conflicting points. Can anyone clear this up, I'm hoping we get lots of accents.

Woke up early to play a bit before work..... Random thoughts that probably only matter to me

Set all the rookies to red armor and vets to green, love the Star Trek riff

Game really does feel like X-Com

Cash is very tight, you really have to plan out your moves and think about your decisions

On another forum I complained about the weapon art, (too cartoonie) Its growing on me

Alien Containment section felt scripted as they set up a mission to use the tech right after I was exposed to it

My Sniper is the King of Battle

Early on I love the cover system

Only played the demo, but if nothing changed, then unfortunately everybody speaks and sounds 'merican, regardless of country of origin. It's the future, and the effects of globalization are hard felt everywhere, it seems.

It's so weird, given it's Firaxis we're talking about. They voiced dead languages for Civ V, for chrissake.

If anybody is up for playing some multiplayer, send me a message on Steam.

Put me in as a member of some teams. Bonus points if you can make me wear green, with a shaved head, and a master of hand-to-hand combat. Just like in real life!*

Update on Amazon: they screwed it up further, claiming now that the promised upgrade to overnight shipping can't happen. So, I paid the $3.99 for a game that I will receive 2 days after release? Awesome work, chaps.

* Mostly. I usually wear subtler colors.

Probably nobody thought it was that important, since they were all speaking English anyway. Extra voices cost money, and having them might have cost us actual game mechanics, which would be bad.

It does feel very X-COMish. This game is difficult, even on Normal.

Surprisingly, however, Operation Bloody Mist was an unqualified success. I saw that name, and I figured I was going to end up with a Skyranger full of body bags.

Here is team Goodjer, aka, the ladies in white.

Third mission out. Heavy dies of poison, assault freaks out and fires shotgun at the NPC we're escorting, who is also poisoned.

Yep, this is XCOM.

It makes me wish Gamesworkshop would make a pc version of warhammer 40k that plays like this game.. I know it would cost them a fortune in miniatures...

I've been thinking the exact same thing for weeks. It kills me that all of the WH40K games these days are RTS's or FPS's. It's an inherently turn-based game.

Stupid masses.
