Goodbye to a dear friend and good companion

Elvis, our dog and companion for over 12 years, was put down today. We noticed that he wasn't much of himself this past weekend. He had an accident in the house on Saturday, which is extremely unusual. He was so weak that I had to carry him up the stairs last night. My wife took him to the vet this morning, and they confirmed our suspicion that something was terribly wrong. The doctors said that he was very anemic, and that his abdomen was full of fluid. They told us that it was very advanced cancer, and there was little they could do, and they weren't sure he would make it through the night. I came home from work and my wife and I discussed our options. We decided, very reluctantly, to have him put to sleep so that he could die peacefully, with us. We went to the vet's office and spent a few minutes with him before they administered the drugs. They put him to sleep about 2:30 pm this afternoon.

We'll miss you. You were a good friend, a protector and source of joy in our lives. You went everywhere with us, from the tops of mountains to Mardi Gras parades. I'm very sad that our daughter won't get to know you, and what a good dog you were. I hope wherever you're at, that you're in peace and free of pain. You're a good dog, and we're very sad you're no longer with us.

So sorry to hear that. As someone who has been there, that is always one of the toughest things to do.

And I always have to quote Kipling.

Rudyard Kipling wrote:
The Power of the Dog
by Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

This x100. I was fortunate enough to have my sweet dog around for almost 14 years before we finally had to say goodbye. It's been 4 years and I still miss him dearly.
