Has anyone looked into this?
I was at my local Gamestop and saw the boxes. It looks really cool.
The game piece (figure) carries your saved character so when you go visit a friend who has the game on any of the popular platforms it will load up your character from your game piece.

I'm going to get it for xmas "for my son"

I think the grand parents will but it for the wii so we (er he) can play there.

It looks like a lot of fun.

Tagging. I want to look into this more in a bit. At a glance it looks like it could be something fun me and my two boys.

I bought this for two of my kids for Christmas as well. I actually got to visit Toys for Bob about a month ago. One of my friends is the level artist for the game. I got to meet the whole team and the level of love and enthusiasm that went into this game (that I had never heard of) was very surprising. It always amazes me how much effort is spent on these games that end up as only one game among many. When I see something like that, I almost feel grateful to only have to pay 60-70 bucks for it. The owner of Toys for Bob designed the whole workplace as a Tiki lounge in an old hanger out near Sausolito. The work environment seemed very friendly. I kind of had a sinking feeling when I found out Activision was their publisher. Hopefully it does well enough for Activision not to can it.

The technology of the portal works very well and I think my kids are going to love it. I don't see myself playing anything but coop with them, but I am sure they will obsess with this one.

I am already seeing a lot of hate from Spyro fans. They are making a mistake to think this is even a Spyro game. He is just one of many characters.

Yeah I also found this intriguing and I think I'll be getting it for my son for Christmas too.

Reviews making their way out, genuinely positive tone. Here is a good one.

That's cool.
Marketing will make or kill this game.
They need to get it out on TV NOW. Has anyone seen any marketing yet? I know if my son got wind of this he would be all over it.

I picked this up for my son and his best buddy. The two of them havent put it down since. The theatrics they go through to "summon" their characters is hilarious.

I've seen it advertised on all the kid "toon" networks but any marketing directed at the usual gaming community is absent as far as I can tell. So it is being advertised, but as a toy would be. Probably a smart move.

The guys on Giant Bomb were talking about this in fair detail on their latest podcast, about 20 minutes in. Sounds interesting but a bit of a cash sink if you want to go all in. Almost like the toy equivalent of the microtransaction model or a more extreme version of Pokemon's "gotta catch em all" mantra.

It looks to me to be a form of Webkinz for slightly older kids; you buy physical toys, and get to use them electronically.

I thought about that but really...how else would you do this? The figures are well done, they save data internally, and each of them has a unique quality. 8 bucks seems reasonable. The figures really look great.

I bought the kids the base pack (70) plus 5 figures (36) and was able to cover every "element" in the game. Later birthdays or good behavior are an easy excuse for more later.

What a neat idea. I would have loved this when I was a kid.

Don't get me wrong! I don't think it's unreasonable at all as long as the underlying games/toys aren't garbage and so far I've been hearing that the quality isn't half bad.

Also, as a kid I would have gone nuts over a game with this sort of game-figure connectivity

If they built this sort of thing for Pokemon, my daughter's head would explode with glee. I suspect she'd have my wife and I killed just to use the insurance money to collect all the figures.

This doesn't interest me at all but it sounds like a neat idea with really neat tech to tie it all together. I fully expect Activision to can it if it doesn't sell CoD numbers right away though. They also own Toys for Bob so I hope it does well for them if nothing else.

Yes, If Pokemon bought the license to do this from Activision, or did a similar delivery they could laugh all the way to the other banks that they don't deal with yet because they already make lots of money and already laugh all the way to THOSE banks is all i am saying with that "laughing all the way to the bank" statement thing i did there.

I listened to the giant bomb guys talking about it and one of them said if transformers did something like this it would be an cool, I would be all in but I think this is a cool premise and I hope it does well

hmm, I, too would've gone crazy over this as a child. Will have to test the addies on my daughter and see how she reacts to it.

I'm pretty strongly tempted to buy a copy for my daughter. Because I am obviously too grown up to be sucked in by awesome little shark dudes with guns.

It has awesome little shark dudes with guns?!
My SON will love this! Not me though. I'm too old to have fun with fire-ball throwing rock men.

What platform are you guys buying on? My 4 year old son can't really hold the xbox contoller, but he can use the mini Wii remotes. Not sure how it would play with the Wiimote though.

I still don't know which platform I'll ultimately be buying on, but I just got back from Toys R Us and bought EVERYTHING they had because I could use the Buy 2, Get 1 Free deal. Plus, if you spent over $100, you got a free figure. So I got the three $20 sets they had, plus all of the figures except for one. Apparently there is one Target exclusive and one Walmart exclusive. Toys R Us has an exclusive 3 pack, which I got free, but it's just repaints of Spyro, Chop Chop and the brown dragon guy. Cool repaints, but repaints nonetheless.

I'm getting PS3.
My son also has a dsi but I hear that won't be the same game.
We also have a wii but his Nanna and grandad are getting it for the wii for him to play when we go over. Not spoiled. Just an only grandchild.

So you just bought the figures and not the game?
Sounds like a great deal you got!

If anyone has actually tried it out let us know. I we won't have it till Xmas.

might have to buy for my niece and nephew for xmas:)

My Walmart and Target were flush with their exclusives. Must have received second shipments or something because earlier reports were that they were out. Looks like the 3DS game starter pack bundle has two exclusive charaters: Dark Spyro and Ignitor (with an awesome flaming sword +1). I hope those figs are sold seperately at some point.

I just saw this at the FLGS. I don't know about the rest you guys, but I am getting this for ME. The girls can buy their own darn Skylander figures.

Way to own it, Larry.
